Overview

Finding a family-friendly SUV that's also fun to drive and own can be difficult, but the 2018 Ford Edge might fit the bill. The Edge provides sufficient cargo and passenger room, even if it lacks the third row of a larger SUV. It's also still pretty easy to park, and it gets better gas mileage than the heavier cars.

A base fuel-efficient turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, a smooth V6 offered on the SEL and Titanium, and a muscular twin-turbo V6 featured in the Edge Sport are the powertrains available. All trims have the same six-speed automatic transmission, with the exception of the Sport, which has it as standard. The new Safe and Smart package is currently available on SEL, Titanium, and Sport trims. Blue Metallic and Lightning Blue are two new colors that have been added to the palette.

Buying Advice

The SE should be your best bet if you just need a basic crossover without having to worry about a bunch of pricey options. But if you desire for something more, we think the SEL is the way to go. It offers more amenities and access to options packages while keeping the price reasonable. Make sure to get it with the Equipment Group 201A package for the desirable Sync 3 infotainment system. We also prefer the V-6 over the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as it seems a bit underpowered at times.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

"If you’re shopping for a roomy, versatile crossover SUV that is more Sport than Utility, the 2018 Ford Edge should hold strong appeal." - Kelley Blue Book

The 2018 Ford Edge crossover SUV has a car-like ride and handling, as well as the capacity to handle deep snow and light off-road tracks. The 2018 Edge features a 2-row, 5-passenger layout with plenty of room for both people and cargo. The 2018 Ford Edge comes with three engine choices: a standard fuel-efficient turbocharged four-cylinder, a smooth V6 optional on the SEL and Titanium, and a powerful twin-turbo V6 found on the Sport trim.

There are four trim levels to choose from for the 2018 Ford Edge: SE, SEL, Titanium, and Sport, with prices ranging from $29,220 to $40,675.Except for minor cosmetic changes, there are no discernible differences between the 2018 Edge and the prior model. The 2018 Edge comes with a plethora of options. This year, a new SEL Sport Package is available, which includes blacked-out headlight bezels and Magnetic Metallic paint on the grille, mirror caps, 10-spoke 19-inch wheels, and rear spoiler.

Features
8.0/10

When it comes to choosing the new Ford Edge 2018, there are plenty of possibilities. SE, SEL, Titanium, and Sport are the four trim levels, with prices ranging from $29,220 to $40,675. The SE, SEL, and Titanium variants all come standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

On the SEL and Titanium trims, a 3.5-liter V6 engine (280 horsepower, 250 lb-ft) is offered as an option. Both engines come with a six-speed transmission and front-wheel drive as standard. All-wheel drive is available as an option. Unlike the rest of the Edge lineup, the sports trim has only one powertrain configuration: a turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6 engine with standard all-wheel drive.

Dual-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (DEATC). Hand-free foot-activated liftgate. Leather-Trimmed Seats with Miko Cloth Inserts.

The Edge can be equipped with a variety of convenience and luxury elements on the inside. Adaptive steering and cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, and active park assist are among the available driver-assist functions on the optional Sync 3 infotainment system, which seamlessly combines your smartphone's navigation and communication capabilities to your car.

We Recommend

If you only need a basic crossover and don't want to spend a lot of money, the SE trim is a great option. However, we believe the SEL is the way to go if you want something a bit more. While keeping the price reasonable, it provides greater amenities and access to options packages. If you want the coveted Sync 3 infotainment system, order it with the Equipment Group 201A package. The V-6 engine also outperforms the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which might feel underpowered at times.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The standard Edge with the 2.0-liter turbo-4 gets 21 mpg in the city, 29 on the motorway, and 24 mpg combined. On the highway and mixed cycle, the AWD edition's fuel economy drops noticeably to 20/27/23. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine in the middle of the Edge series gets 17/26/20 mpg with front-wheel drive and 17/24/19 mpg with all-wheel drive, according to the EPA. The Edge's twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 is exclusively available with all-wheel drive and is rated at 17/24/20 mpg.

The Nissan Murano has the largest fuel tanks, which can hold 19 gallons of gasoline. The Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe are right behind it, both with 18.8-gallon gasoline tanks, while the Ford Edge has an 18.0-gallon tank.

"Ford’s Edge crossover SUV for 2018 offers a 2-row, 5-passenger layout that has generous space for both people and cargo. The cabin has a fresh, premium design." - Kelley Blue Book

2018 Ford Edge Seating and Comfort

The 2018 Ford Edge crossover SUV sports a 2-row, 5-passenger layout with plenty of room for both people and goods. The Edge's wide exterior and form-fitting seats provide ample legroom for both front and back passengers, with the rear seats providing an astonishing 40.6 inches of legroom.

The cabin has a modern, high-end appearance. Ford has ditched adaptive-touch controls in favour of hard buttons for radio and Air conditioning system control on the Edge. Ford has gone to great lengths to provide a quiet cabin with plenty of sound insulation.

2018 Ford Edge Dimension and Weight

Starting with a big trapezoidal grille and ending with a sloped back and wraparound lighting that brings cohesiveness, the Ford Edge style is modest yet forceful. The piano-black grille treatment, distinctive headlamps, body-color front, and rear fascias, and body-color lower cladding set Sport versions different.

The silhouette of the 2018 Ford Edge crossover SUV is wide and squat. This leads to a spacious cabin, but Ford's large dimensions should be considered when parking in a one-car garage. The wheel diameters range from 18-inch alloys on SE and SEL models to 19-inch alloys on Titanium versions to 20-inch alloys on Sport vehicles. The Sport level also comes with a 21-inch wheel option. A sport-tuned suspension is also included.

Safety
7.0/10

Mixed reviews from safety agencies hold the Edge back from scoring better in this category. A five-star rating from NHTSA is good, but it doesn’t take into consideration IIHS’s unique small-overlap crash test, in which the Edge earned only an Acceptable score. The 2018 Ford Edge comes with a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The SEL, Titanium, and Sport models get a Safe and Smart Package that includes adaptive cruise center-forward collisions on warning, automatic high-beam headlamps, lane-keeping assist. Standard features available on the base are mentioned below.

  • Personal Safety System
  • Side-Impact Airbag - Front and Second Row Safety Canopy Side-Curtain with Rollover Sensor.
  • SOS Post-Crash Alert System.
  • Belt-Minder (front safety belt reminder)
  • Child-safety rear door locks.

2018 Ford Edge Vs 2018 Nissan Murano

Nissan Murano, like the Edge, is priced under $30,000. Murano, on the other hand, offers a level of luxury that is uncommon at this price point. It offers an elegant cabin with high-end materials and exquisite style. In addition, the front seats are very comfortable. If you value luxury, the Murano is the vehicle to choose.

2018 Ford Edge Vs 2018 Kia Sorento

The 2018 Kia Sorento comes with five or seven seats and is a wonderful family vehicle. In addition to outperforming the Edge in crash tests, the Kia boasts a starting sticker price that is thousands of dollars lower. So, if you're searching for a car with a high safety rating and five seats, the Sorento is a terrific value for money option.

2018 Ford Edge Vs 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe starts at just $600 more than the Ford Edge, yet it comes with a few additional features and seven seats for a similar price. The Hyundai Santa Fe also boasts a larger engine and towing capacity than the Ford Edge. Instead of choosing the Edge, one should choose Santa Fe, which is a superior option for the same price.

Final Verdict

If you don't need third-row seating, the 2018 Ford Edge is a decent option to consider. The cargo room is also impressive for a two-row SUV. The interior of the Edge is spacious, with plenty of room in both rows, making it a good family vehicle. This SUV can also be had in Ford's "Sport" grade, which gives it an extra touch of A few superior crossover SUVs are worth considering, however. When it comes to interior quality, it's hard to beat Nissan Murano.
