Overview

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with a new and bigger touchscreen and everyone's favorite Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The mean track machine Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is also back strapped with a 707-hp supercharged V8 engine. As standard, the Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that is good enough for 295 hp, a 0-60 mph time of over seven seconds, and a mediocre 3,500 pounds towing capacity.

What hasn't changed on the Grand Cherokee is the long list of trims, a stiff ride quality, plush interior, and enviable off-road capability. The reliability of the Grand Cherokee over time has been its Achilles heel and this time around we don't see it changing as mechanicals and hardware of the Grand Cherokee has been unchanged this year. For a price range of $30,895 to $53,995, let's see in this review if the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is worth the buck.

Buying Advice

For getting the true Jeep experience we recommend going for the Trailhawk trim that costs below forty-five grands and gets all the necessary mechanicals and hardware for making the Grand Cherokee a mean off-road machine that is also a well-suited daily driver.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

With a long list of trims and a couple of engine options, the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with a new infotainment screen and a couple of standard smartphone connectivity features. The secret sauce of the Grand Cherokee remains the same, a luxurious cabin, long feature list, and commendable off-road capability. Since it hasn't been mechanically updated what remains is stiff ride quality, poor handling, compromised cabin and cargo space, and mediocre safety ratings.

In the meantime, the rivals have caught up in the game. The almost similar Dodge Durango offers better cabin and practicality, the Toyota 4Runner offers similar off-road prowess, and the Ford Explorer gets a roomy cabin and a generous cargo capacity. Thus in the segment, the buyers are spoilt for choice and in our review, we will see how Grand Cherokee stacks against its rivals.

Features
8.0/10

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in seven trim levels namely Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit trim. That's not all there are further five more optional packages in between the trim levels thus giving a lot of choice to the buyers. The Laredo trim starts at $30,895, comes with a V6 engine, and is well-equipped with features. Slotting in between the Laredo and the Limited trim that starts at $38,495 there are three optional packages. The first one is the Laredo E package that gets an 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation, a power liftgate, heated front seats. 18-inch alloy wheels, etc.

Then there is the Upland package that adds 4WD, 20-inch alloy wheels, heated seats and steering wheel, black-out appearance package, etc. Lastly, there is the Altitude package that excludes the 4WD and adds everything from the Upland package with a power liftgate, remote start, leather seats, etc. All three packages are priced at $30,895 and apart from the standard features they also include a few optional features like a sunroof, a nine-speaker sound system, navigation, etc.

Coming to the Limited trim it also has an optional Sterling Edition package which is Grand Cherokee's 25th-anniversary package. It adds special badging, exterior chrome treatment, unique upholstery and trims, driver-assist features, 8.4-inch touchscreen, premium audio system, etc. Over Limited trim, you have the Trailhawk trim only available as a 4WD model with a starting price of $43,595.

Then there are two more trims, Overland trim priced at $45,295 and the top end Summit trim priced at $50,995. Both of them uplift the luxury quotient of the Grand Cherokee and offer the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engine as an option. Lastly, there is a High Altitude package for the Overland trim that adds driver-assist features, a dual-pane sunroof, a 19-speaker sound system, and Quadra-Drive II.

We Recommend

For getting the true Jeep experience we recommend going for the Trailhawk trim that costs below forty-five grands and gets all the necessary mechanicals and hardware for making the Grand Cherokee a mean off-road machine that is also a well-suited daily driver.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2018 Grand Cherokee in its standard guise has an EPA estimated gas mileage of 19 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, 21 mpg combined. The V8-powered Grand Cherokee sees a massive drop of 5 mpg in the city and 4 mpg on the highway gas mileage.

MPG (highway) 26 24 21 26
MPG (combined) 21 20 18 21
Fuel Capacity (gallons) 24.6 18.6 23.0 24.6

Since Dodge Durango shares the powertrain with the Jeep Grand Cherokee it offers a similar gas mileage. As for the other rivals, none are as efficient as the Grand Cherokee.

"Jeep's most recent improvements certainly make the Grand Cherokee's cabin a nice place to be."- Edmunds

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Seating and Comfort

The cabin of the 2018 Grand Cherokee is among the best in the business making use of good quality material for the cabin. The design is simple and ergonomic but some functions are buried deep requiring you to go through a couple of menus to access them. The front visibility from the cabin is hampered by the thick roof pillars while rearward visibility is satisfactory. Getting in and out of the vehicle is a task as the ride height is more than average. The optional air suspension is a saving grace as it can be used to lower the SUV to easily get in or out.

The seats of the Grand Cherokee offer a good amount of support and the higher trims even get a quilted-stiched premium leather upholstery that can even put to shame some high-end luxury vehicles. There are plenty of adjustment options available for the front seats while heated front and rear seats are offered on all but the base trim. The cabin also offers a host of color options right from gloomy black, premium white, to racy red.

Except for the Jeep Grand Cherokee all other SUVs here can be had as a seven-seater too. While only the Ford Explorer offers a seven-seat option right from the base trim. That might get you to think then the Explorer would have compromised on the amount of space especially the legroom. But that's not the story here, in fact, the Explorer offers the best head, shoulder, and legroom among all if we compare the first two-row spaces.

Interior Features:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Available power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Available heated front seats
  • Available heated steering wheel
  • Available leather-trimmed seats
  • Available driver seat memory function

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Infotainment System

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee from this year comes standard with the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that runs on the Uconnect interface. The system is very easy to use thanks to the Uconnect although using climate control functions through the touchscreen is a bit tricky as it is buried deep in the menu. Standard features for infotainment include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, six-speaker sound system, etc.

.Available as an option on the packages and standard on the higher trims is the bigger 8.4-inch touchscreen. While other optional upgrades include the Alpine premium 9-speaker sound system, navigation, 19-speaker Harman & Kardon sound system, etc.

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cargo Capacity

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers 36.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats while with the rear seats folded you get 68.3 cubic feet of total cargo space. The rear seats also offer 60/40-split folding to accommodate large or odd size cargo.

Being smaller in length compared to the rivals puts the Grand Cherokee at a disadvantage here. That said, the high load floor means you have to lift the cargo while air suspension does come in handy here, as you can lower the ride height.

All the rivals straightaway offers better cargo space compared to the Grand Cherokee. The Toyota 4Runner offers the highest maximum cargo space while the Dodge Durango has the highest cargo space behind the rear seats.

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Dimensions and Weight

The design of the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee can now safely be said to reach iconic status. The design was last changed eons back and still, it doesn't look dated. The trademark seven slat  Jeep grille, the rectangular headlights flanking from the side, the recess in the middle of the bonnet are what comprise the unmistakable front looks of the Grand Cherokee.

The segment best 8.6-inches of ground clearance gives it an imposing stance although the smaller 189.8-inches of length and 114.7-inches wheelbase between the wheels does makes it appear small. At the rear it is the same story, you get wrap-around tail lights and dual-exhaust tips for a sporty look.

Model 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2018 Ford Explorer 2018 Toyota 4Runner 2018 Dodge Durango

Ground clearance (in) 8.6 7.8 9.0 8.1
Wheelbase (in) 114.7 112.8 109.8 119.8

Dimension-wise the Ford Explorer is the widest and the second-longest SUV that has helped it in getting a generous cabin space. While the Toyota 4Runner is the tallest SUV and the Dodge Durango has the longest wheelbase (the reason for its higher cargo capacity). What's surprising is even though the Durango has the longest length and wheelbase it still isn't as spacious on the inside as the Explorer.

Exterior Features:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Heated outside mirrors
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Available 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Available xenon automatic headlights
  • Available dual-pane sunroof
  • Available power liftgate

Safety
4.0/10

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee lacks in terms of standard driver-assist features and advanced safety systems. That reflects in its average safety ratings. The IIHS gave the 2018 Grand Cherokee the highest rating of 'Good' in only four out of six parameters while for the small overlap front test it got the second-lowest rating 'Marginal' for the driver side and the lowest rating of 'Poor' for the passenger side.

The NHTSA shared a similar opinion and gave the 2018 Grand Cherokee an overall safety rating of four out of five stars with a similar rating for the front crash, a perfect five-star rating for the side crash, and a three out of five-star rating for rollover mitigation test.

Safety Features:

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Hill Start Assist
  • ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Available blind-spot monitor
  • Available forward-collision warning w/ automatic emergency braking
  • Available lane-departure warning w/ lane-keep assist

Competition
8.0/10

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Vs 2018 Toyota 4Runner

The Toyota 4Runner may not be as plush or feature-rich as the Jeep Grand Cherokee but it has its mechanicals sorted and remains a tough and rugged off-road vehicle. The bigger displacement V6 engine of the 4Runner has oodles of torque that come in handy in lower RPMs and while off-roading. Although the same engine is a gas guzzler compared to the Grand Cherokee's V6.

TThe Grand Cherokee on the other hand impresses you with the long feature list and a modern Jeep styling. While the 4Runner promises to deliver a spacious cabin with loads of practicality. That said, the ride quality of both the SUVs isn't great although the 4Runner is far more reliable and cheaper to maintain than the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Vs 2018 Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango even though it shares the same underpinning as the Grand Cherokee it manages to undercut the base price of the Grand Cherokee by one grand. For the lower price, the Dodge Durango offers better space and cargo area. Option of going for the seven seats and a more mature-looking SUV compared to the Grand Cherokee.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee might boast of a luxurious cabin but in a true sense, the space and practicality offered on the dimensionally bigger Durango tilt the scale in its favor. That said, the Dodge Durango isn't as capable off-roader as the Grand Cherokee but it can tow more than the Jeep. Thus picking one between the two depends more on priorities and less on their individual merits.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee in its standard guise is nothing new for the market. What's hot is the new Trackhawk trim that hides a 707-hp supercharged V8 under its hood and is capable of some silly straight-line runs. Another talking point for the Jeep Grand Cherokee is its highly capable diesel-powered variant that has the highest towing capacity and better gas mileage. The Grand Cherokee in its standard guise has the same old story of stiff ride quality, power being adequate, great fuel economy, a commendable off-road capability, and how to forget a long list of trims and optional packages to choose from. That said, the 2018 Grand Cherokee even with minor changes remains a competitive offering in the segment although its below-average predicted reliability could be a concern for prospective buyers.
