Overview

Code-named JL, the new Wrangler replaces the decade-old but beloved JK-series Wrangler. The 2018 Wrangler features an updated exterior design and improved features inside the cabin. The Soft-top and hard-top removable roofs have also been improved for easy installation. The newly added Sahara trim offers an exclusive Selec-Trac full-time four-wheel-drive system, which is suitable for individuals who only use their Jeep's four-wheel-drive system in bad weather.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler has a starting price of $26,995 for the standard two-door sport model and a top price of $40,495 for the four-door Rubicon variant. A 3.6-liter V6 engine with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque powers all trims. The engine is connected to a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

"Redesigned for 2018, the Jeep Wrangler is more than just a dominating force off-road." - Edmunds

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler has grown in length, width, and height. Under the hood, it sports a slightly tweaked version of the old 3.6-liter V6, but it can now be paired to an optional eight-speed automatic transmission, which dramatically enhances the Wrangler's drivability. This year, a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes its debut.

The Wrangler is offered in three trim levels, namely, the Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and the Rubicon. All trims are offered in either classic two-door, short-wheelbase, or Wrangler Unlimited four-door configurations. Pricing for the 2018 Wrangler starts from $26,995 for the base two-door sport model and goes all the way up to $40,495 for the 4-door Rubicon trim. The Wrangler’s five-year costs for gas, insurance, repairs, and maintenance are estimated to be about $25,200.

Features
8.0/10

The two-door and four-door Unlimited body variants are available for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon trims are available for the two-door, while Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon trims are available for the four-door. Pricing for the 2018 Wrangler starts from $26,995 for the base two-door sport model.

Only the four-door version of the mid-level Sahara is available. Because of its unique characteristics, such as reduced axle gearing and an automatically detaching roll bar, the Rubicon is the most capable off-road model of the 2018 Wrangler. A higher-quality soft top, as well as a black or body-colored hardtop, are available for all models.

The same Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine powers all models, providing 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. In 2019, a diesel option for four-door Wranglers is expected.

We Recommend

Off-roading capabilities are exceptional in the Sahara and Rubicon grades. If hitting the trails is on your weekend agenda, Rubicon trim of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler would be the right choice for you. On the other hand, the Wrangler Sport S is an ideal option. This trim has a lot of technical upgrades and features plenty of standard features. It's also less expensive than the top trims and appears to be well-made.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

EPA-estimated fuel economy with the V6 engine and the 8-speed automatic transmission for the 2018 Wrangler is 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. The 6-speed manual, on the other hand, gets 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, for a combined 20 mpg.

mpg (city) 17 17 21
mpg (highway) 23 20 29
mpg (combined) 19 18 24

In this class, the Range Rover Evoque has extremely remarkable fuel economy ratings. The Evoque gets 21 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg overall. The Toyota 4Runner is the least fuel-efficient vehicle in the lineup.

Interior
7.0/10

"Jeep Wranglers have long been focused primarily on capability instead of comfort, but the redesigned 2018 model retains the former while making strides toward the latter." -Edmunds

The materials inside the cabin have been refined for 2018. There is a touch of sophistication with soft-touch material covering the dashboard, upper front door panels, door armrests, and center console in higher trims. The front seats are well-shaped and remain pleasant and supportive for the duration of the journey.

The rear seat of the Wrangler Unlimited can accommodate three people, making it a true 5-passenger SUV. Getting in and out of a Jeep Wrangler is easy or challenging depending on your height and whether you have side rails fitted.

The Jeep isn't a quiet SUV, which is evident from its appearance. Tire noise can be heard along with the disturbance when the wind blows over its boxy body. However, the new Wrangler is quieter than previous models, and the hood flutter is no longer an issue. The much improved soft top is also far less noisy and flappy than the previous model.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Infotainment

Three different sized touchscreen infotainment systems are available for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler grades. The entry-level devices come with a 5-inch touchscreen and classic button controls. The knobs are bigger and have a tactical feel to them. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported by the system.

The 7.0-inch touchscreen in the intermediate Wrangler variants has no tactile buttons or knobs. You can communicate with the system using speech recognition. The top-tier system features an 8.4-inch touchscreen which improves visibility and offers a friendly user interface. It is also free of knobs and buttons. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrations are also included.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Cargo Space

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler has approximately 32 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seats up, which is big enough. When you fold the back seats down, you'll have more than 72 cubic feet of cargo space, which is plenty for hauling large items and ideal for luggage during a weekend holiday.

Meanwhile, the two-door Wrangler fails to offer as much cargo as the Unlimited. It manages to offer 13 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 47 cubic feet with folded rear seats.

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler has a totally new and updated body. The front fascia features a huge front grille with a bold and erect appearance, as well as large headlamps cut into the distinctive seven-slot layout. You can still fold forward the windscreen for low-speed off-roading and increase ventilation after these numerous tweaks.

A trio of new top designs is one of the most noteworthy changes for 2018. The zipperless soft top, available in standard or premium fabric, is considerably easier to take off and put back on. It can also be set up bimini-style to provide shade while maintaining an open-air aspect.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Dimensions

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler weighs a hefty 4277 lbs which is followed by the 4Runner at 4675 pounds. The Range Rover Evoque is the lightest at 3865 lbs. The Wrangler offers only 8.7 inches of ground clearance compared to the 9.6 inches offered by the Toyota 4Runner.

Safety
6.0/10

The NHTSA has awarded the off-roader a three out of five stars in rollover and frontal crash tests. While the Wrangler has performed poorly in the frontal crash prevention test there are new optional safety features that can be opted for with the 2018 Wrangler. Some key safety features offered with the 2018 Jeep Wrangler include:

  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system.
  • Airbag system.
  • Helps maintain traction when accelerating on slippery road conditions
  • Rear Vision Camera.
  • Child security rear door locks.
  • Passenger Sensing System.
  • Rear seat reminder.
  • LATCH System.
  • Teen Driver.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
  • Horn, dual-note.

Competition
8.0/10

2018 Jeep Wrangler Vs 2018 Toyota 4Runner

The 2018 Toyota 4Runner and Jeep Wrangler are old-school SUVs. Off-road, these body-on-frame vehicles are extremely capable, and their sturdy suspensions and four-wheel drivetrains can withstand harsh circumstances. However, neither is a comfortable on-road cruiser. The 4Runner, on the other hand, is a superior choice for the majority of shoppers. When the available third-row seat is used, it can seat up to seven passengers. The 4Runner also offers a roomier cargo area and a greater towing capacity.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Vs 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

The Range Rover Evoque is a cost-effective SUV in the Range Rover lineup. When it comes to power, the Range Rover Evoque does fall behind the Wrangler But, the Evoque offers better fuel economy. The Evoque has off-road capabilities but falls behind the features offered by the Wrangler. When it comes to build quality and standard features, the Range Rover Evoque has the upper hand over the 2018 Wrangler.

Final Verdict

Wrangler's prices have always been reasonable. Nothing appears to be able to equal their attractiveness and performance in the market, thus they don't need to be cheap. The revamped 2018 Jeep Wrangler is thought to be a good successor because it incorporates current technology and improved efficiency. The Sahara trim, which has been updated, is priced to compete with more traditional full-size crossovers. This year, Jeep sensibly targeted a wider range of SUV shoppers with the new Wrangler.

Loving Living on Mountain Top with Our Jeep Ranger Unlimited!

Pros - ["We can drive up our mountain road to our home in 4 wheel drive effortlessly while others are stuck at the bottom!", "We are never stuck on the side of the road..."]

Cons - ["Nothing we don't like!", "We love everything about it!"]

We absolutely love our 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK for many reasons...primarily because we live on top of a mountain at the end of the long dirt and gravel road! We have room for all of our trips off the mountain whether we are taking our huge Newfoundland dogs for a ride or just going to Costco for a month's worth of groceries. And it drives just as smooth and steady as the day we bought it!...

              Taking the wrangler anywhere

Pros - ["I like the lift, I'm very tall", "Durability"]

Cons - ["Wish it was a bit bigger", "Chrysler electronics suck"]

The wrangler is true to its capability. Which is taking it everywhere. It may not be the fastest but I'm confident that I can go anywhere I want. The mpg isn't the greatest and I average anywhere between 15/21.
