Overview

The 2018 Honda CR-V takes the top spot in the highly competitive compact SUV segment, with an overall impressive package of an enticing interior and exterior layout, class-leading cargo space, coupled with even better gas mileage numbers. The 2018 CR-V has a strong value statement with a great safety score, above-average resale value, and a comfortable ride over rough pavements. This best-selling Honda car is on sale with next to no changes for the 2018 model year, carrying forward two fuel-efficient powertrains. The CR-V also offers premium interior space. It has one of the more spacious rear seats in its class. The 2018 CR-V is available in four trim levels, in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The base CR-V LX trim is powered by a 184 hp 2.4-liter I-4 engine while the CR-V EX, EX-L, and Touring trims come standard with a more powerful and efficient 190-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4 engine.

We Recommend

Since the CR-V received a full redesign for 2017, the 2018 or 2019 models saw no major changes. The 2017 Honda CR-V is an excellent choice as it is less expensive if you are shopping for a used compact SUV. Further CR-V's average cost of ownership for the 2017 model is lower than in 2018, estimated at around $20,940 and $22,100 respectively, for over five years. Though choosing the CR-V EX is the cheapest way to get a turbocharged performance, to get the most luxury out of your ride, check out the CR-V Touring.

At these prices, the Honda CR-V undercuts the arch-rival Toyota RAV4. Other compact SUVs like Nissan Rogue and Mazda CX-5 start a little lower. Another good aspect of the Honda CR-V is its high resale value. To get the most luxury the top CR-V Touring model comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free power liftgate with programmable height, LED headlights with auto on/off, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a 330-watt premium audio system.

2018 Honda CR-V for sale

The 2018 Honda CR-V crossover SUV goes on sale at a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting around $24,150 for the base LX FWD and $25,450 for the LX AWD model, a good pick for most shoppers. However, with impressive standard convenience features and advanced safety technology, the EX is a more popular choice starting at around $26,950. Used compact SUV shoppers looking for more premium features like leather, the EX-L trim costs around $29,450 while the top-range CR-V Touring starts at $32,650. The average price of the used 2018 CR-V is around $26,000 which is slightly higher than the most used compact SUVs, but it compensates with a lower five-year cost to own and a high resale value. Currently, the best Honda lease deals on the new CR-V are around $299 per month for 36 months with $3,599 due at signing. However, if you want to have your Honda CR-V for more than five years, leasing can become unaffordable.

Buying Advice

We recommend the EX trim as it gets the must have 1.5 L turbocharged engine offering more power and more efficiency than the base 2.4 L naturally aspirated engine. Plus you also get the much better high resolution 7.0 inch infotainment with Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Honda CR-V has received many accolades over the years, which makes it one of the most popular vehicles amongst the masses. A perfect family-oriented SUV, the 2018 CR-V is spacious and well-equipped with loads of creature comforts to make your ride that much more comfortable. A smart choice for daily needs, its relatively tall-riding stance, and various other ride-assistance tech allow it to also take the uncharted off-road path. Safety has also been given the utmost importance, with even the basic trims having the best-in-class driver-assistance tech. Rivals of the CR-V now include the likes of Ford Escape and Mazda CX-5.

J.D. Power rates the 2018 Honda CR-V with a three out of five predicted reliability rating. Though this rating is average in the industry, in the compact SUV class this is a bit low. The 2018 CR-V is only into its second model year after a redesign last year. We liked the crossover's quick acceleration numbers, the responsive and smooth CVT automatic transmission, and the interior room. However, we wished that the CR-V's otherwise frustrating infotainment touchscreen be a little larger and focused on the driver. The 2018 Honda CR-V was built in Indiana, Ohio, and Canada.

Buying Advice

The Honda CR-V is one such compact SUV, wherein whichever variant you choose, you do get your money's worth. Nevertheless, having said that, out of the 4 trims on offer, the EX trim is a more popular choice and offers the best bang for your buck. As for the starting price of $26,450, this particular trim gets the latest set of creature comforts to aid you in a comfortable setting. Also applicable to this trim is the standard 190 hp 1.5L turbocharged Inline-4 engine, which is better than the rest of the rival engine choices.

For compact SUV shoppers, a new 2019 Honda CR-V's starting price ranges from around $24,450 for the base LX up to $32,850 for the Touring. Following a full redesign for the 2017 model, the CR-V saw no major changes for 2018 or 2019. It makes more sense to opt for the 2017 CR-V, which is nearly identical to the new CR-V but is less expensive. Moreover, shopping for a CR-V from the previous generation, spanning from 2012 to 2016, will get you a similar seating space and cargo room. However, only the 2015 and 2016 models have available safety features similar to the 2019 CR-V, still lacking the higher-quality cabin materials, sharper styling, and two engine options.

2018 Honda CR-V Cost to Own:

The 2018 CR-V's five-year cost of ownership (including costs for gas, insurance, repairs, and maintenance) is estimated at around $22,100, or $4,420 per year. Comparatively, the cost to own this Honda car is below average in the compact SUV segment. The 2017 CR-V has a lower cost of ownership than the 2018 model, mostly considering its lower starting price and depreciation value.

Features
7.0/10

The 2018 Honda CR-V is offered in over 4 trim levels, namely LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring, with prices starting from an MSRP of $24,150 for the base CR-V LX trim and $32,650 for the top-most Touring edition. The base CR-V LX has enough standard features to fulfill needs and sports a base naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine. As you move up the trim table, EX and the above models have more desirable features and safety technology. Available in both FWD and AWD setups, every CR-V uses smooth shifting automatic CVT.

The base LX trim has a 5-inch audio display, a multi-angle rearview camera, four speakers, Bluetooth, a USB port, two 12-volt power outlets, remote keyless entry, automatic climate control, cloth upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, halogen headlights, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

For those looking for the latest tech and safety systems, the EX, EX-L, and Touring trims should be under consideration as they are equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the Honda Sensing safety package.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The CR-V is the most fuel-efficient compact crossover we’ve tested so far, and it’s not a hybrid—yet – Car and Driver

The 2018 Honda CR-V's base LX model is EPA rated at 26 MPG in the city and 32 MPG out on the highway, which is above-average in the compact SUV class. However, the CR-V LX AWD mileage drops to 25 and 31 MPG in the city and highway respectively.

The 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine is even more efficient than the base CR-V engine. With FWD, it gets 28/34 mpg while the AWD CR-V turbo gets 27/33 mpg. The CR-V has aced both the performance and fuel efficiency front, which makes it the go-to SUV in this segment.

We recommend going for the Honda CR-V with a turbocharged engine, as it offers more power and better gas mileage ratings. Opting for EX, EX-L, and Touring will get you the turbocharged motor. Further, every CR-V model comes with a similarly-sized gas tank, having a capacity to hold 14-gallons of un-leaded gasoline.

Interior
8.0/10

2018 Honda CR-V Seating and Comfort

Practical, upscale, and well-equipped. The 2018 Honda CR-V's interior offers one of the spacious cabins with a modern look, thanks to its clean design, ample technology features, and clever packaging. The crossover SUV seats 5 passengers comfortably, with front seats offering good bolstered support, and a rear seat with ample head- and legroom. Cloth upholstery is standard, whereas the higher EX-L and Touring trims get premium leather upholstered seats.

The 2018 CR-V offers 39.2 cu. ft of cargo space, which is the best-in-class. You can also fold the split rear seats further down in a 60/40 manner to gain a maximum of 78 cu. ft of cargo space. Honda also offers plenty of interior cubby holes for you to store all your belongings when in need of a long weekend ride. This also adds up to the list of positives the CR-V endures in turn for the best-selling tag.

The 8-way power-adjustable seats are standard in base CR-V LX, whereas heating and ventilating functions are only available with the higher trims. The dashboard as a whole uses soft-touch plastics, which although lags in its premium nature, evidently are enough for the price it is being offered at.

  • Heated steering wheel

  • Sunroof
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control system

2018 Honda CR-V Infotainment System

The 2018 CR-V has a standard 7-inch touchscreen system, which at best is impressively responsive and easy to use. The only negative we found with the CR-V was that the infotainment screen was too small and that it could have been a little more angled toward the driver. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available with the infotainment system to take care of your entertainment needs. For all the audiophiles out there, Honda also offers a 330-watt premium audio system to take care of your audio duties.

Some of the infotainment features on offer are-

  • Bluetooth
  • USB connectivity
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 8-speaker audio system with HD Radio
  • 7-inch touchscreen with navigation
  • An upgraded rearview camera with dynamic guidelines

Exterior
6.0/10

Though still unmistakably a CR-V, the latest version of Honda’s small SUV looks like it has hit the gym, with a long, wide stance and more aggressive wheel designs – Kelley Blue Book

A striking front end along with the aggressive body styling is what makes many prospective buyers go for the 2018 CR-V model. Its rugged off-road look is partnered with the new pattern 17 and 18-inch alloys. A gentle amount of character lines flowing through the sides gives it a relatively streamlined look.

Honda employs adequate chrome accents all around, which may or may not suit many. The overall exterior silhouette screams of practicality, despite the slightly sloping roofline, which in hindsight does not take away from the rear headroom at all. The assertive design language is further accentuated by all of the muscular wheel flares. Dimension-wise, despite having the smallest wheelbase of the lot, the 2018 Honda CR-V offers the highest cabin space of all.

Safety
8.0/10

All the 2018 CR-V trims but LX comes standard with the Honda Sensing Suite that includes the latest driver assistance and safety features. The Honda CR-V gets a 5 out of 5-star rating overall safety ratings from the NHTSA, while the IIHS deems it a Top Safety Pick +  for the 2018 model year. The new CR-V has a unibody construction, which employs high-strength steel, that manages to absorb the effect in case the compact crossover gets into a collision.

Some of the active and passive safety features on offer are-

  • Road Departure Mitigation
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow
  • Blind Spot Information system
  • Cross Traffic Monitor
  • Auto High-Beam System
  • Driver Attention Monitor

2018 Honda CR-V vs 2018 Ford Escape

The Ford Escape is the underdog of this segment. It is backed by the Ford reliability, is good to look at, and has a decent cabin space too. Comfort inside the Escape is unmatched, and it also comes at a consumer-friendly price tag.

But when you put the Escape against the Honda CR-V, the more favored car amongst the two tends to be the Honda CR-V. The Honda CR-V is a comprehensive package that does what a compact SUV is meant to do brilliantly.

2018 Honda CR-V vs 2018 Mazda CX-5

Both the Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5 have been pitted against each other for ages. While there is no match to the Honda CR-V performance numbers, the Mazda CX-5 clearly takes the cake in terms of outright exterior design layout.

The CX-5 also offers you impressive ride and handling dynamics. Coming onto the interior, the CR-V has no match for the practicality quotient it provides, whereas the CX-5 is known for providing a more premium cabin space.

Final Verdict

With no new changes in the specs and features department, the 2018 Honda CR-V will still continue to dominate the compact crossover segment, with its sheer performance and practical interiors offered for an affordable price tag. Moreover, just like its previous iterations, the 2018 CR-V delivers a spacious interior and cargo, great fuel efficiency, family-friendly features, and a high safety score. A highly reliable and safe package, to say the least, the 2018 Honda CR-V is surely the way to move forward.

              Would Think Twice

Pros - ["Lane Departure", "Cruise Assist"]

Cons - ["Inability to pair your phone", "Electronic glitches"]

Given the positive nature of owning the Honda brand, I woukd think twice about spending that land if monet on a top of the line Honda CRV. With all the bells and whistles, it isn't user friendly. If you have an Android and plug it into the correct outlet ot doesn't recognize it therefore doesn't display the navigator option, system glitches alot and has to be reset

              Hondas are great

Pros - ["Size, its small for a family of 4 but managing with only 2 using the car", "Function, I deliver so it holds a great hit"]

Cons - ["Lack of storage", "Lack of backseat room"]

I do love my Honda. The gas mileage rocks, its stylish. I do wish it was bigger but right now with the economy, Im taking one for the team. We have taken this car through several states jam packed. Its been sturdy and reliable. I couldnt have asked for a better car while the gas prices are crazy
