The plain fact is it’s just too expensive for them to replace how ever many thousands of Edge engines are failing. Ford brings in a commuter and budget-friendly compact SUV with the Ford Edge. The SUV suits the city well with its compact dimensions and a practical drive. However, the 2018 Ford Edge comes across a wide range of reliability issues and user concerns. The reliability concerns with the SUV range from Engine misfiring to overheating seats. Most of the issues with the car relate to the mechanical subsystems and the structure of the car. The widespread Ford aftersales network addresses these concerns with prompt services and recalls. On the record, the 2018 Ford Edge registers 123 user complaints and 4 recalls so far with a 5-star safety rating. The compact SUV finds its rivals in the Nissan Murano, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Kia Sorento. The Ford Edge ranks in the 8th spot in the CarHp list of top-10 SUVs of 2018. Here’s a closer look at the car.

User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine - The SUV comes across a few engine issues. The most common issue is the coolant or antifreeze leakage into the engine. This leads to engine misfiring. Antifreeze leakage also leads to engine overheating, increasing the chances of a fire. The solution to this issue requires engine replacement.
  • Brakes - Few customers report complaints of braking failure. The SUV does not slow down when the users depress the brake pedal. This increases the chances of a crash and compromises the safety of the user and other motorists.
  • Powertrain - Stalling is a common issue with the Ford Edge. Users report the SUV losing speed and stalling under driving conditions. This can increase the chances of a crash.
  • Steering - Complaints report the SUV ball joint to separate under driving conditions. This steers the vehicle harshly until stopped. This increases the chances of a crash.

Electrical Problems

  • Instrumentation Cluster (IC) - The instrumentation cluster of the SUV is prone to glitching and blacking out. This can confuse or distract the driver, increasing the risk of crashing.
  • Battery - Parasitic battery drains are common with the SUV. Users report the battery drains at rapid rates leading to loss of electrical power. A sudden loss of power under driving conditions increases the chances of a crash. The fix requires replacing the vehicle battery.
  • Headlights - Dimmer headlights lead to inadequate illumination when driving at night. This compromises the driver’s vision and increases the chances of a crash.

Safety Problems

  • Airbags - User complaints report many cases of airbag deployment failure in the event of a crash. This compromises the occupant’s safety and increases the risk of an injury in the event of a crash.
  • Seatbelts - The seatbelts do not buckle/unbuckle with ease. This can increase the chances of injury in the event of a crash or may result in fatality.

Structural Problems

  • Sunroof/Moonroof - The SUV is prone to experience sunroof/moonroof explosions without any external damage. Users report shattering and explosion of the sunroof with a loud sound. This increases the risk of injury to the vehicle occupants and can distract the driver.
  • Rear tailgate - The tailgate of the SUV is prone to dropping down while open. This increases the chances of an injury while operating the vehicle.
  • Seats - The temperature-controlled seats are prone to overheating and cousin injuries to the occupants. Few users report the sharp edges of the seating resulting in occupant injuries.

Logistical Problems

  • Recalled parts - Users report the dealerships failing to procure recalled parts over long durations. Unavailability of recalled parts leads to delayed vehicle recalls. This renders the users without their vehicle.

Should you buy the 2018 Ford Edge?

The Ford Edge offers a budget-friendly SUV experience for daily commuters. The SUV brings a wide range of features and driver aids that complement the compactness of the car. This suits the city commute well. However, the 2018 Ford Edge comes across a handful of issues and reliability concerns. Most of these issues are structural flaws and manufacturing defects. Ford aftersales addresses these issues and customer grievances with prompt and efficient services. Even so, due to the reliability concerns, we do not encourage the SUV for frequent touring. We recommend looking at reliable options in the Nissan Murano or the Hyundai Santa Fe over the Ford Edge.
