Overview

The compact 2013 Toyota Corolla is offered at a much lower price compared to the competitors and comes with some important changes for this year. The Corolla front end features a redesigned grille that now looks sharper and sleeker compared to the more bold and thick one which was there in the 2012 model. Also, two Special Edition models are offered, one each with the LE and S trims for this year. With now over 5 varied trim configurations, the 2012 Corolla is priced at an MSRP of $16,230.

The Corolla scores impressive safety scores, now with the latest driver-assistance tech being offered as standard. The interior is also offered with the latest infotainment features and a newly updated audio unit. Moving onto the powertrain front, the 2013 Corolla is offered with a 132 hp 1.8L Inline-4 engine. What it lags on the powertrain front, it more than makes up for it in the fuel efficiency front.

Buying Advice

The LE trim with the Premium Package equipped would be the best choice. The LE trim adds many features over the base trim while being significantly lower priced than the highest-end S trim. The Premium Package adds a 16-in. 5-spoke alloy wheels, a power tilt/slide moonroof with sliding sunshade, fabric-trimmed front seats, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, automatic climate control, and many other features. All of this makes this the ideal choice in the Corolla sedan lineup.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The engine under the 2013 Corolla's hood is a 1.8 L Inline-4 which is the only option and there are manual and automatic transmission options available to choose from. The Toyota Corolla comes in three main trims and two sub-trims starting at $16,230 and going up to more than $19,060 for the top-end trim. This shows that the 2013 Corolla has been very competitively priced. The 2013 Corolla sedan competes with the Subaru Impreza, Chevrolet Cruze, and the Honda Civic.

Features
8.0/10

The 2013 Toyota Corolla sedan is offered in three main trims which are L, LE, and S. The LE and S trims are also offered in Special Edition sub-trims. These Special Editions come with a unique exterior color theme along with some special exterior touches and some added features. The LE and S trims are also offered with a Premium Package which comes with larger 17-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, and some interior features. All Corolla models are powered by the same 1.8 L Inline-4 engine with two transmission choices available. The following table shows the detailed list of features and pricing of the main trims-

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2013 Corolla Sedan, even with the weaker engine and disappointing performance doesn’t deliver an impressive fuel economy. The Corolla outputs a fuel efficiency of 26 miles in the city, 34 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 29 MPH. The Corolla has a fuel capacity of 13.2 gallons which is also on the lower side, resulting in a combined range of around 383 miles which is also not that much.

The Honda Civic is the most fuel-efficient car among all these while the Chevy Cruze has the largest fuel capacity. However, the Subaru Impreza can travel the most distance without a refill as it comes with the best mpg and fuel capacity combo.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2013 Toyota Corolla comes with a low-quality interior that looks outdated. That is pretty much the gist of it. This car doesn’t impress in the interior quality either. However, the interior is plenty spacious and offers a lot of room. The cargo capacity offered is also sufficient and the Corolla can take enough luggage with it during long trips.

The materials and elements on the inside of the cabin are of below-average quality and not nice to look at or to touch and feel. The seats are fabric trimmed in the lower trims and so-called sport fabric trimmed in the highest-end trim. The competitors all seem to be in a segment higher when compared to the interior of the 2013 Corolla.

The Subaru and the Honda have the best-looking interiors and come with quality materials all around the cabin. All models here come with a spacious interior while the Cruze offers the most cargo capacity. The Impreza and the Civic are also the most comfortable ones while the Cruze lacks seating comfort. Overall the Corolla has the worst interior and the following are some of its most important interior features-

  • Automatic climate control
  • Sport fabric-trimmed front seats; 6-way adjustable driver’s seat
  • 4-way adjustable front passenger seat
  • Fabric-trimmed 60/40 split fold-down rear seat
  • Tilt/telescopic steering wheel with metallic accents and audio controls

How intuitive is the 2013 Toyota Corolla Sedan’s infotainment unit?

The 2013 Toyota Corolla sedan comes with a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment unit. The touchscreen is not the best available in the segment, but it does its’s job pretty well. The sound system consists of a 6-speaker setup and is of mediocre quality. Overall it’s fairly basic and there’s nothing to be excited about the infotainment features of the 2013 Corolla.

The following are the standout infotainment features-

  • Display Audio includes 6.1-inch. touch-screen
  • AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability
  • Six speakers
  • Auxiliary audio jack
  • USB port with iPod connectivity and control
  • Multi-Information Display with outside temperature, current/average fuel economy, average speed, and trip distance

Exterior
5.0/10

The 2013 Corolla sedan looks simple and quite good from the outside. The styling and design language are simple and some minor changes have been made to the 2013 iteration of the Corolla. The front grille now has become thinner and looks sleeker and much better than the old model. The exterior has a simple and practical design that doesn’t look flashy or come with any bells or whistles.

The wheels in the Corolla sedan are 15-inch steel ones in the lower trim and get upgraded to 16-inch ones in the mid-level trims. The highest-end trim could be equipped with 17-inch alloys by option for the Premium exterior package. This package further adds a power moonroof and some other perks and features. The Corolla comes with a 5.8-inch ground clearance which is enough for the city environment.

The 2013 Subaru Impreza looks the sportiest from the outside and it also actually is the most powerful one. The Cruze also looks pretty good while the Civic and the Corolla look outdated. The Civic however has the most ground clearance followed by the Cruze. The Cruze is the heaviest and that is also by a significant margin as it is the only one that has a curb weight above 3,000 lbs.

The following are some of the most important exterior features-

  • 16-in. 5-spoke alloy wheels
  • Power tilt/slide moonroof with sliding sunshade
  • Chrome-tipped exhaust
  • Color-keyed front and rear underbody spoilers, sport side rocker panels, rear spoiler
  • Multi-reflector halogen headlights with black sport trim
  • Chrome rear license plate garnish

Safety
8.0/10

The 2013 Toyota Corolla sedan has been crash-tested and rated by both NHTSA as well as IIHS and it performed impressively in these tests. NHTSA has given Corolla a 4-star overall rating and similarly impressive scores under all individual parameters including all 5-star ratings in all side safety tests. IIHS has also awarded the Corolla sedan the Top Safety Pick award which means that this is a super safe sedan.

The following are some of its standout safety features-

  • Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
  • Traction Control (TRAC)
  • Brake Assist (BA)
  • Smart Stop Technology (SST)
  • Energy-absorbing collapsible steering column
  • Front and rear energy-absorbing crumple zones with side-impact door beams
  • Head-impact protection structure
  • High-tensile-strength steel body panels
  • Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS)
  • Engine immobilizer

Final Verdict

This one is not for you, no matter what your requirement is. The Toyota Corolla sedan is a disappointment in almost all matters except for being a safe car and that it comes with Toyota’s impeccable reliability. It comes with a weak engine and a low power output. Combined with unimpressive handling and a low-quality interior, the Corolla sedan is a total failure. Any other car in the segment would be a better choice compared to this one.

Great car, good on gas and it can tow up to 750 lbs. The car can go 3 miles on empty and has a 259 mile range when full. Good sound from the radio. The screen is small and the radio did go out but you have to pull the fuse and put it back in, in order to restart it again.

Toyota Corolla is one of the high ranking cars

Pros - ["Good mileage", "Toyota is a good brand of car"]

Cons - ["The radio screen screen stopped responding to the touch.", "The back up camera doesn't make warning noises."]

I fell in love with my car as soon as I saw it. I knew it was going to be mine before I even test drove it. Everything was perfect except for after a few years, the touch screen stopped working. To replace, is speedy. The back up camera works great, but I wish it had a warning sound along with it. Overall, Toyota is one of the leading brands of cars and I love mine.

Safe pick for a reliable car

Pros - ["* I love that it's easy on gas", "* I love that the technology is still compatible with 2024s technology"]

Cons - ["Sometimes it shows a tire pressure icon when there's no issue", "Sometimes it stalls . Rarely though"]

Owning a Toyota Corolla has been awesome. It's great for everyday driving, and I love the fuel efficiency 30-32 MPG in the city and 40-42 MPG on the highway. The interior is comfy and has plenty of space, and the infotainment system is really easy to use. The safety features, like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, make me feel safe. Overall, it's super reliable, low-mainten...
