Overview

The 2013 Dodge Dart is an all-new model and is a result of Fiat-Chrysler’s partnership, aimed at scooping some piece of the compact sedan market. The 2013 Dart shares several engineering elements from Fiat, like its unibody chassis that also underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulietta hatchback. And, to fit in the Dart’s sedan body style, Dodge has also stretched the wheelbase and length of the platform and now boasts a wider track and body as well. This dimensional expansion comes with some structural enhancements, as well, where 68% of the bodyshell is composed of high-strength steel.

Buying Advice

If you’re in need of something budget-friendly, then the Dodge Dart SXT with its premium features like cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, split-folding rear seats, comes across as a very logical and practical buy. It also gets the option of both the 1.4-liter MultiAir inline-4 engine as well as the ‘Tigershark’ 2.0-liter inline-4 engine - which are efficient engines as well. But if you’re searching for a budgeted performance Dodge, then the Dart R/T models should be right up your alley.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Rigidity apart, at a starting MSRP of $15,995, the Dodge Dart offers good value in the segment it lies in. The Dart is distinctively different with its visual proportions, and with a lower stance is also sportier-looking, has ample space on the inside alongside an efficient powertrain. The standard 6-speed manual gearbox is also sourced from Fiat, as is the optional 1.4-liter MultiAir engine that is found in the Abarth 500. It also comes packed with several safety features and tech equipment, with many segment-firsts as well, including cross-path collision and blind-spot monitoring system. However, with an infamous reliability index, choosing the Dart becomes a bit dicey. Especially, when seen in comparison with the likes of the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Mazda3 sedan.

Features
9.0/10

The 2013 Dodge Dart is offered in a total of five trim levels, with a combination of three different engines and three transmission options. Starting with the base Aero which gets an inline-4 engine that produces 160 hp, as part of its standard package. Other standard features in this trim include keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescopic leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 4-speaker sound system, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.

The Dart SE trim also gets the same features, but under its hood is a standard 160-hp 2.0-liter inline-4 engine. Moving up the trim level unlocks even more niceties with features like 17’ inch aluminum alloys, LED interior lighting, and an 8.4-inch UConnect infotainment screen. The top of the line R/T trim also gets a 2.4-liter inline-4 engine making 184 hp alongside sport-tuned suspension, 18’ inch alloy wheels, heated leather sports seats, and many more.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The Dodge Dart is the most fuel-efficient sedan in Chrysler’s stable, but amongst its competition, it's not the best. With the base 2.0-liter inline-4 engine, the 2013 Dart SE returns 25/36/29 MPG in city/highway/combined situations, with the six-speed manual transmission.

With the ‘MultiAir’ 1.4-liter engine, the efficiency rises to 27/39/32 MPG in city/highway/combined situations. The base Dart Aero model is the most fuel-efficient in the lot for its reduced weight because it replaces some steel parts for aluminum. This helps its fuel economy as high as 41 MPG on the highway.

The Dart can hold 15.8 gallons of fuel which helps it travel as long as 569 highway miles. Among the tight competition here though, the Mazda3 sedan surpasses the Dart with an even more efficient powertrain, that helps travel 580 miles, at a single stretch with a full tank at 14.5 gallons. Honda and Toyota have similarly-sized tanks, but the 2013 Civic averages higher efficiency of 32 MPG.

Interior
7.0/10

Based on its interior volume, the Dodge Dart technically can be categorized into a mid-size sedan, but one with pricing similar to smaller cars. However, the Dart is the largest car in the compact sedan class. Both the front and rear seats are comfortable and the cabin is widest at 58.2 inches at the front and 56.2 inches at the rear. Front passengers have 0.2 inches of more legroom in the Dodge Dart than the Civic and Mazda which does bring in some extra comfort for occupants in longer journeys. The front seats are wide and comfortable with good bolstering and under-thigh support. While you do get cloth upholstery in most trim levels, the range-topping R/T brings in heated leather seats which add a significant premium touch to it.

Even at the back, the Dodge Dart offers a pretty comfortable estate. Interestingly, the long sloping roof does eat into the rear headroom but by a few margins over its competitor. With the extension of the underbody, cargo space on the Dodge Dart has also increased at 13.1 cubic feet which is the most in its class. Otherwise, the interior surface is laden with soft-touch material, and matching colors and accents complement the cabin very well. Additional aesthetic features like LED interior lighting and cup holder illuminator, enhance the cabin's feel and presence. There are many useful storage pockets available throughout the cabin. Dart models equipped with the 1.4-liter engine get a sunroof as well, ‘denim’ interior fabric, and the latest Uconnect 8.4 system.

Each sedan in the segment has a total seating capacity of 5 passengers. As mentioned before, the 2013 Dodge Dart gets the most cargo space in its class. The Honda Civic is the next spacious compact sedan, followed by the Corolla and Mazda3. The Dodge Dart is the widest vehicle in its segment, but the rear legroom is not the most spacious. Both Mazda3 and Honda Civic have an advantage over the Dart in this regard. Key interior features in the 2013 Dodge Dart include:

  • Nappa leather upholstery (First in its class, available with Limited, R/T trim)
  • Heated seats
  • Power adjustable driver's seat
  • Six-speaker audio system
  • Heated leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Split-folding rear seatback

How intuitive is the 2013 Dodge Dart's Infotainment unit?

All Dart models have a pretty basic infotainment unit with only the Limited and R/T models having access to Chrysler’s 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment touch screen. However, other models can get the screen fitted for an optional $595. This big screen helps Dodge do away with most buttons or dials on the dashboard, as commonly found on the Charger. However, the volume knob and ac dials are separately placed, along with steering mounted audio controls available in upper trim models.

Also, available with the Uconnect infotainment system is Garmin's navigation system, which with its clear graphics and bright colors makes it look modern as well. Besides Bluetooth connectivity, there are also USB ports for charging and media connectivity, and a separate voice command system is also available. For its price and class though, the 2013 Dodge Dart does pack a handy infotainment suite with most of your basic needs covered neatly. Key infotainment features in the 2013 Dodge Dart are:

  • 8.4-inch UConnect touchscreen infotainment
  • Garmin navigation system
  • 4 or 6-speaker sound system
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Radio AM/FM
  • CD Player
  • Satellite Radio

Exterior
9.0/10

The Dodge Dart stands out amongst its competition with an exterior design that makes it look modern and sportier than its peers. At one glance, it would be hard to guess that the 2013 Dart sits on a stretched platform also found on an Alfa Romeo hatchback. The front fascia is unmistakably Dodge with the cross-grille, which also incorporated active grille-shutters in higher models.

Inspired from the “Dodge Charger” the rear fascia on the other hand is very “Dodge” with a slim horizontal tail light bar running across the boot lid. The tail light unit has 152 LED lights inside - are all signs that are reminiscent of a Dodge vehicle. The Dart rides on standard 17” wheels, but upper trims, like the R/T rides on 18” wheels, as well.

Besides those premium features, the Dodge Dart is the heaviest vehicle at 3186 lbs in its segment for it uses high-strength materials in its structure. And, with a length of 183.9 inches, the Dart has a wheelbase of 106.4 inches, which takes the competition to midsize cars as well. It also sits low for its ground clearance at 4.0-inches, which is the lowest in its segment. In terms of design though, the Dart does carry some sportiness and aggression into it while rivals like the Honda Civic and Mazda 3 are more on the elegant and humble side of things, with the latter having the highest ground clearance of 6 inches. The Toyota Camry on the other hand is the lightest option with a curb weight of 2800 lbs. Key exterior features in the 2013 Dodge Dart are:

  • 17” aluminum wheels/18” aluminum wheels
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Heated - Power-folding mirrors
  • Active Grille shutters

Safety
9.0/10

The 2013 Dodge Dart stands out from its competition by offering many standard first-in-class safety features. This includes Blind-Spot Monitor control with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, 10 airbags, and knee airbags for both front occupants. Aside from that, federal institutions, like the NHTSA have given the Dart an overall crash rating of five stars, the IIHS has even declared it as their Top Safety Pick+ model. This makes it one of the highly-rated safe compact sedans, something where both the Corolla and Civic are ahead. key safety features in the 2013 Dodge Dart are:

  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Cross-traffic alert
  • Cross-path collision detection
  • Anti-theft Alarm System
  • Electronic safety systems

Final Verdict

For its price tag, the Dart is a very reasonable purchase. The base SE model with less weight is more fuel-efficient than the lot where it returns an impressive 29 MPGs of combined mileage. The most premium Dart - the Limited model - has a very reasonable purchase price for the standard comfort and infotainment features it comes loaded with. The 8.4inch Uconnect infotainment screen on this model is the largest in its class. Being a Chrysler product, it might have a non-reliable background as a package, but the 2013 Dodge Dart is impressive enough to own one for five years, to say the least.

Not the best Dodge vehicle they have made

Pros - ["Good on gas", "Good sound system", "Comfort in the front seat"]

Cons - ["Not enough leg room for rear passenger", "Too many recalls", "GPS outdated"]

I bought a Dodge Dart LE 2014. It handled very well and great on gas, however it wasn't but two weeks I had to put it in the shop for a recall for the gear linkage malfunction. I don't recommend anyone getting one.
