Overview

The Dodge Charger has been a fan favorite for millions of Dodge enthusiasts ever since its introduction in 2005. The muscular looks paired with a promising powertrain and the practicality of a sedan make the Charger a great hit in the industry as the majority of car enthusiasts seek a blend of practicality and fun. The 2014 Dodge Charger is the most humble car in the Dodge fleet with its modest yet capable powertrain unit as well as its best-in-class interior space and cargo capacity.

Buying Advice

The SXT trim available at $30,700 has always been one of the most preferred trim levels in the Charger lineup. The SXT trim brings in some premium features into the cabin as well as the exterior aesthetics and seems to be the most sensible option to go for as it offers so much for so little. Moreover, you can also configure the Charger SXT with AWD.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Prices for the 2014 Dodge Charger starts from $28,000 for the base ‘SE’ trim level and goes all the way up to $34,400 for the ‘R/T AWD’ trim level. It competes against the likes of the Chrysler 300, Nissan Maxima, and Honda Accord V6 in the large sedan segment.

Features
7.5/10

The 2014 Charger is available in 4 trim levels that are named SE, SXT, SXT Plus, and the SXT 100th Anniversary Edition. The base SE trim level offers a good number of standard features and creature comforts and as you go through the other trim levels, the standard features just keep coming. The SXT 100th Anniversary Edition priced at $34,700 is a new trim level offered for the 2014 Charger and Challenger to honor Dodge’s 100 years of being relevant in the automotive industry. It brings in some aesthetic upgrades as well as some infotainment features into the Charger lineup.

We Recommend

The SXT trim available at $30,700 has always been one of the most preferred trim levels in the Charger lineup. The SXT trim brings in some premium features into the cabin as well as the exterior aesthetics and seems to be the most sensible option to go for as it offers so much for so little. Moreover, you can also configure the Charger SXT with AWD.

Engine and Performance
8.1/10

The engine that powers the 2014 Dodge Charger is a modest 3.6 L naturally aspirated V6 motor that produces 292 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. of torque. These power figures would definitely seem less than the Charger’s elder siblings such as the Charger R/T and the SRT ones, but considering the price point, the Charger proves to be a bargain as it packs the largest engine and power figures in the segment despite being one of the cheapest options.

The engine is mated to a clever 5-speed automatic gearbox that brings out the best from the V6 motor and delivers a quick yet comfortable ride quality when compared to the V8 Charger that is on the sharper and faster side. The Charger is available both in RWD and AWD in its SXT and SXT Plus trims and we would suggest going for the AWD configuration for quicker accelerations and more grip, while the RWD configuration adds excitement to the ride. The Charger can do a 0-60 mph pull in 7.2 seconds and cover a quarter-mile distance in 15.3 seconds. It maxes out at 152 mph and is certainly one of the fastest cars in the segment.

The Nissan Maxima and Honda Accord might seem faster on a straight line but they get their advantage due to the fact that they weigh less than the Charger. The Dodge Charger on the other hand has better driving dynamics and brakes. It is also one of the better cars in the competition in terms of overall driving pleasure.

Fuel Economy
8.1/10

The Charger delivers a decent fuel economy for a car of its caliber. Being a V6, fuel economy is an advantage that comes with the smaller engine unit when compared to its elder siblings with V8s. The Charger delivers a combined fuel economy of 21 miles per gallon and offers 18 and 27 mpg in city and highways respectively.

Having a fuel tank capacity of 19.5 gallons has facilitated the Charger to offer a max range of 526.5 miles on the highway and 409.5 miles as its combined fuel range. Though some of its rivals offer more fuel economy and range compared to the Charger, the Charger seems pretty decent for the money especially considering the fact that it’s a performance-oriented sedan.

The Chrysler 300 and the Charger do have the same powertrain units and tank capacity, but the Chrysler being in a different state of tune is inclined towards comfort and range than the performance-oriented dynamics of the Charger. The Honda Accord on the other hand seems to offer a really good range on the highway despite its smaller fuel tank all thanks to its 34 mpg economy figure on the highways.

Interior
8.1/10

For a 2014 model year car, the Dodge Charger’s interior looks ahead of its time with the best in class materials, design layout, and infotainment system offered in it. The overall interior design layout looks sporty and has a muscular design element to it. The dashboard’s ergonomic layout is pretty driver-oriented and adds a lot to its muscular aesthetics.

Dodge has made sure that the Charger’s bold exterior styling and its interior are on the same page by adding design elements that are both bold and striking. The steering wheel design, dashboard design, and other interior elements all suggest that the Charger is a serious machine. The front bucket seats are 8-way power-adjustable seats with heating. The seats are nice and wide and offer a decent amount of comfort and confidence, especially around corners.

Some buttons for the infotainment system, cup holders, a storage bin, and an armrest are present in the center console as well. The rear seats are 60-40 split-bench seats that are arguably some of the most spacious and comfortable seats in the segment. The Charger is blessed with a decent amount of second-row space along with other creature comforts such as dual-zone automatic climate control and three 12V DC charging outputs.

The cargo capacity of the Charger is large enough just like its interior dimensions. With a cargo capacity of 16.5 cu-ft. of volume, the Charger certainly offers a lot more than what its rivals offer at a higher price. The closest rival to the Charger when it comes to interior space and cargo capacity is the Chrysler 300 and it is too obvious as both these cars share the same platform. The Japanese rivals on the other hand compromise the interior space and cargo capacity when compared to the Charger. Some of the notable interior features are:

  • Tilt and Telescopic Steering Wheel
  • Heated front seats
  • Cruise Control
  • Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control
  • Keyless start

How intuitive is the 2014 Dodge Charger’s infotainment unit?

Dodge always makes sure they provide the best of infotainment features and the Charger isn’t different. The infotainment system seems pretty crude in the base trim levels and goes on to offer some premium features once you go up the trim levels. Moreover, Dodge offers their Uconnect infotainment system in the Charger with an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display that is easy to use and quite responsive.

The addition of the touchscreen display has managed to reduce the cluttering of buttons in the center console. The lower trim levels get a basic sound system which has 6 speakers and a 276w amplifier. The ‘SXT 100th anniversary edition’ trim on the other hand offers a premium Beats by Dre sound system with 10 speakers and a 552w amplifier. Other infotainment features include SatNav, satellite radio, and Uconnect Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity. Some of the notable infotainment features are:

  • Satellite Radio
  • USB port
  • 8.4-inch multi-information infotainment display unit
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Premium Beats by Dr.Dre surround sound system with 10 speakers
  • Uconnect Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity

Exterior
8.1/10

The 2014 Dodge Charger is one of the best-looking cars in its segment and there is no doubt about that. The signature front and rear fascia is unmistakably Dodge and has become bolder with blacked-out features and other features such as LED tail lamps and the automatic Halogen headlamps in the front. The Charger’s wheelbase and width do seem larger than its Japanese rivals, but it does help it be stable in a straight line and grip the road better in corners.

The Dodge Charger’s proportions seem right for its dynamic ride quality and do help it to give it an exciting driving experience. The Honda Accord is the quickest car in the segment due to the fact that it is the lightest in the segment. The Chrysler is also pretty much similar in terms of the overall exterior dimensions to the Dodge Charger. Some of the notable exterior features are:

  • Sunroof
  • Blacked out grille elements
  • 20-inch aluminum wheels
  • Rear Spoilers
  • All LED tail lamps
  • Automatic halogen headlamps

Safety
9.5/10

The Dodge Charger is also one of the safest options in the segment with an overall safety rating of 5 stars from the NHTSA. The IIHS has also given their ‘Good’ safety pick to the 2014 Dodge Charger. The Charger’s platform allows for its dynamic ride quality and best in class space and is one of the safest ones in the industry. It has a row of safety features that include side impact beams, Traction control, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Low tire pressure warning systems, and curtain airbags. Some of the notable safety features are:

  • Traction Control
  • Low Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Side impact beams
  • Blind Spot Monitor (Optional)
  • Cross-Traffic Alert (Optional)

Final Verdict

The Dodge Charger proves to be one of the ideal options to go for in its segment. It has a handsome appearance, spacious interior, large cargo capacity and is one of the cheapest cars in the segment. All these attributes mean that the Charger is a decent value for money car for people who want all the advantages of a large size sedan plus some exciting driving experience and safety.
