Overview

The muscle car segment in the States is like kids from the same neighborhood playing the same game, but with each kid having his own style. Just like that, the 2014 Dodge Challenger is doing things very differently than the rest of its peers. Just take a look at this car, give it a thought, have you seen anything like this anywhere on the planet? Probably not.

Buying Advice

Say thanks to us, we are doing all the calculations and making the hard choices for you. The base V6 engine on the Challenger has decent power, and for most people, it will do everything just fine. The SXT Plus would be our choice here. If you want more performance-based handling, the several packages Dodge offers will let you have the 20-inch wheels and performance-tuned suspension and steering. What we mean is you can customize the base trim Challenger to almost a top-trim car while having the fuel-efficient V6 engine.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Well, we all know it’s an American icon and horsepower is what we like more than anything else. The 2014 Challenger is blessed with a lot of it, no worries. The Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and the odd man out, Nissan 370Z, all have their distinct styling purposes in the segment. Let’s see if the 2014 Dodge Challenger stays true to its name or not.

Features
9.0/10

The 2014 Dodge Challenger comes in 3 trims, namely SXT, SXT Plus, and Rallye Redline, but the optional packages and stand-alone extras will confuse buyers for life. The base car features a power seat for the driver, air conditioning, and a 6-speaker stereo system. The SXT Plus will add a premium Boston Acoustics audio system, Nappa leather upholstery, etc. The SXT Plus can be had with an Anniversary Appearance group which has some special exterior touches. The Rallye Redline is tuned for performance and handling and costs $2,000 extra. The performance variants like the R/T and SRT will be reviewed separately.

We Recommend

Say thanks to us, we are doing all the calculations and making the hard choices for you. The base V6 engine on the Challenger has decent power, and for most people, it will do everything just fine. The SXT Plus would be our choice here. If you want more performance-based handling, the several packages Dodge offers will let you have the 20-inch wheels and performance-tuned suspension and steering. What we mean is you can customize the base trim Challenger to almost a top-trim car while having the fuel-efficient V6 engine.

Engine and Performance
8.1/10

The 2014 Challenger comes with 3 engine options. The base 3.6L V-6 engine produces 305 hp & 268 lb-ft of torque mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox. This can be further customized with a Rallye Redline trim, which adds a sports mode and paddle shifters. At 6.8 seconds for 60 MPH drag timings, this engine isn’t particularly fast. If you want to experience that seat-hugging thrust, the Challenger R/T would be the right car for you.

Transmission choice is up to you, either a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed auto. Choosing the automatic gearbox will slash a few power figures from the engine though, keep this in mind. Muscle car driving experience is only meant for true hardcore drivers, and so that there isn’t any AWD variant available on these cars, it's RWD only. If you can handle that tailspin on full throttle, congratulations, you are still worthy.

Both, Ford Mustang and the Challenger aren’t doing that well in the 0-60 MPH timings. Some might blame the 5-speed automatic for that, and they are always welcomed to improve the timings with the 6-speed manual. The Nissan 370Z is the quickest in the segment and why wouldn’t it be. It is small and lightweight and has slightly better power. It is more expensive than the Challenger, but it costs second-row space and boot capacity.

Fuel Economy
8.1/10

There is a reason why we still get a V6 engine on a car meant to absolutely destroy everything that comes in its path, fuel economy! You might smile big once on the track day as you emerge victoriously, but that empty wallet is going to smile back at you at the gas station. This only applies to the V8’s on the 2014 Challenger because the base engine as expected returns some decent economy, and with the large fuel tank the car has, we have the best driving range for every scenario. The 3.6L V6 engine returns 18 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway.

We were expecting the 370Z to beat down all the competition in this department as it has several advantages over them, but it fails in terms of fuel efficiency. The Ford Mustang is trying to wash that gas-guzzler stamp off of the muscle cars with that best-in-class fuel economy but is let down by its worst-in-class fuel tank capacity. When comparing the overall range, Dodge offers the most at 526.5 highway miles.

Interior
8.1/10

As enticing is the exterior of the car, equally disappointing is the interior. There is absolutely nothing special on the inside of the Challenger, and this might turn off some buyers. No matter how great a car looks, it’s the interior where we spend the most time, and it should be at least decent. One thing Dodge managed very well on the inside is that the overall design language is symmetrical and flat. The front seats are wide and have thick padding even on the base trim. The SXT Plus and above trims get genuine leather upholstery. The second row of this car is where the magic happens.

Putting those naughty thoughts aside, this second row is hands down the best in the muscle car business. Yes, we agree, getting inside is a little tricky, but at least Dodge managed to have a second row that’s practical considering the category. The seat bench could have been flat, but the automaker has emphasized two passenger comfort more than three. You can seat 3 back in here, but the middle man must be of less than average height. The kind of comfort levels this cabin offers in such a small space is really commendable, and this could be the best muscle car you can have for those long trips.

Once again, the Challenger wins. The 16.2 cubic feet space is larger than some midsize 4 door family sedans. The cargo capacity can even go further as you can fold the seats in 60/40 fashion, but the middle seat hump doesn’t allow them to fold flat, sadly. Nissan comes with the least seating capacity of just 2 people, followed by Ford and Chevy offering seating for 4 adults. Dodge comes out to be the most practical option in the competition with seating for 5. Standout interior features include:

  • Super thick seats on higher trims
  • 6-way power-adjustable driver seat with lumbar adjustment
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Automatic climate control

How intuitive is the 2014 Dodge Challenger’s infotainment unit?

The 2014 Challenger comes ill-equipped in the base trim. It is just an MP3 player with a 6-speaker sound system and an AUX input. No Bluetooth or USB is present. Only the SRT trim gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen system. Even though the big screen will be missed on lower trims, you can still opt for the optional Sound Group & Sound Group II packages which add the touchscreen interface and serious acoustic power to this car. Standout infotainment features include:

  • Optional 6.5-inch touchscreen
  • Optional SiriusXM Satellite radio
  • Optional Boston Acoustic sound system
  • Six speaker sound system
  • iPod/USB audio interface

Exterior
8.1/10

Dodge Challenger exactly fits the saying, staying true to your roots. It’s been six years, and the car looks almost exactly the same as it looked on a 2006 concept. The mere silhouette of this car is enough to give away its identity. Switch on the headlights, even in the dark, and you’ll know what you are looking at.

Being a muscle car would have let the Challenger do whatever body lines it wanted, but the majority of the design is flat, except for that beltline hump at the rear fender which is the Challenger's identity. At the rear, things have stayed quite simple with just a brake light setup, which is huge. The coupe weighs 3,834 lbs, making it the heaviest option in the competition.

Dodge Challenger is the largest car in the group today, and that has allowed it to have quite a few advantages over the competition. Even the ground clearance is very practical. The car is wider than the rivals, and this has very much reflected in the overall cabin space. The rival cars have only emphasized performance and fun value rather than being practical. Just look at the trunk spaces and ground clearances of the Camaro and 370Z. Standout exterior features of the Challenger include:

  • 20-inch black alloy wheels
  • Body-colored rear spoiler
  • Quad bulb halogen setup
  • Super wide tail light setup
  • Sharp lower bumper lip
  • Appearance packages make it look more sinister

Safety
8.7/10

Dodge Challenger has been put under stress by the NHTSA, and for the most part, it is good news. The car has scored 5-stars in the overall safety and 4 stars in the side crash tests. One thing to note down is that during the side crash tests the door of the car was unlatched, which could put the occupants at risk. The IIHS hasn’t rated the vehicle, but we have the federal agency score at our hands to prove its safety. The active safety features list isn’t amazing, but we still have some. Standout safety features include:

  • Hill-start assist
  • ParkSense parking assist
  • Blindspot monitor
  • Brembo performance brakes

Final Verdict

The 2014 Dodge Challenger is a sedan in muscle car clothing if we compare its practicality with other cars. The engine options are vast, and that was never an issue on American automobiles. The only thing to consider before buying this icon is that the interior is not appealing per se, and the exterior design is very specific. If you are fine with these two aspects of the Challenger, then this car won’t disappoint you in any other way. So, get your 20-inch tires on, fill up the tank, and let's meet on the drag strip.

              My review for my Challenger

Pros - ["I love the style", "Low maintenance"]

Cons - ["Not enough room for my kids", "No tints for the windows"]

I love everything about my car the style the fast drives the room to fit a lot of things the room to fit my kids I love the color my son wants to keep the car when he is old enough and rebuild it to be a faster race car
