Overview

It’s not every day that some popular nameplate makes a cameo in a blockbuster, and that too in a masterpiece from Michael Bay. But the car had a huge fan following, even before Bumblebee lost his voice. The American muscle icon walked into the modern world with bulky and tempting sporty looks yet remained connected to its roots with retro-styling cues. The Chevy Camaro pleasantly blends strong muscle car vibes with a modern and appealing silhouette, especially the baffy wheel arches and the bulging hood.

Buying Advice

The Camaro 2LT seems to be the sweet spot in the wide Camaro lineup. It features both luxury and convenience along with advanced tech features. You also get leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Besides a tire-screeching V6 that is also economical, the 2014 Chevy Camaro also offers fire-breathing V8 options, including one that could make a hefty price tag, exotic supercars feel embarrassed on the straights. For years, it has been one of the most desirable muscle cars to the youth, especially in the sparkling yellow paint and black racing stripes. But there are rivals like Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, and Nissan 370Z that target a similar crowd. The prices begin at $23,555 for the base trim, making it affordable for many young buyers out there.

Features
9.0/10

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro is available in 4 different trims. The lineup starts with a 1LS carrying a price tag of $23,555 and goes as high as $29,055 for the 2LT configuration. The Camaro lineup starts with LS and LT trim levels that are divided into two sub-trim levels respectively. The 1LS despite being an entry-level offering is loaded with features like 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, keyless entry, cruise control, a manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth phone connectivity, OnStar, and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio.

The 2LS adds an automatic transmission to the 1LS list of features. The 1LT incorporates fog lights, remote start, eight-way power front seats, a 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone app integration and Bluetooth audio connectivity. The 2LT adds 19-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, a head-up display, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system.

Engine and Performance
7.8/10

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro coupe has several engine options to choose from. The lower LS and LT trim levels fit a 3.6L V6 that cranks out 323-hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mashed with a 6-speed manual for purists while an optional 6-speed automatic adds inconvenience.

Even with the V6, the buyers can guarantee a jollified driving experience, rushing off to 60-mph from standstill in 6.2 seconds. Pick any Camaro and fit any engine, you’ll never miss out on agile handling. The Chevrolet coupe hugs the road around the corners despite being rear-wheel-driven.

Even in its most subtle form, the Chevy Camaro manages to make the rivals feel underwhelming. The Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger offer a wide variety of powertrain choices, but it’s not the case with Nissan 370Z. On the straight, the lighter Mustang manages to be slightly quicker than the Camaro, but for best timings, opt for the Nissan 370Z.

Fuel Economy
7.8/10

Starting with the base V6 engines featuring in the LS and LT trims of the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro. This efficient V6 is impressively powerful, still, nail the economy game with an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg combined. The automatic models deliver more, 22 mpg combined to be exact.

The brawnier the Camaro gets, the less efficient you can expect it to be. Even the Mustang and Nissan 370Z prove to be more economical than the Camaro averaging 22 and 21 MPG, respectively. Though the Mustang has the highest fuel efficiency in this comparison, it employs a much smaller gas tank which translates to the lowest driving range of 353 miles. Both the Challenger and 370Z offer a similar driving range with almost identical fuel tank capacity and fuel efficiency on offer.

Interior
7.8/10

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro coupe is a prime example of how to perfectly blend retro styling cues with modern ergonomics and aesthetics. Jump into the cabin, and you’ll travel back in time with retro touches like square bezels around the gauge cluster. The front seats are supportive and relaxing. They excel in holding the passengers to their place while the driver performs smoky burnouts on the empty yard. The dash is neat and clean, but the lower trims use too many plastics, and hence the appearance is cheap. But the upper trims should please the buyers that are ready to spend more.

There are tons of options, from suede upholstery to leather-appointed seats. The rear seats are hardly functional for adults and should be reserved for children looking for roller-coaster fun. The Camaro comes with fewer flaws and rear visibility is one of them. The thick pillars in the rear and small window make it hard to watch out for the traffic. The boot capacity is restricted to 11.3 cu-ft only. Also, the smaller boot opening makes it difficult to push bigger luggage.

The Dodge Challenger offers the biggest boot of 16.2 cubic feet, but when it comes to the rear seat, each of the rivals is equally cramped and tight. While names like Camaro and Mustang offer a wide range of options to choose from, the Dodge Challenger mixes retro styling with modern-day amenities. The Nissan 370Z eliminates the chances of more than two passengers, but the sporty interior attire is most charming and luring.

Standout interior features:

  • Keyless entry
  • Air-conditioning
  • Manually adjustable front seats with power recline
  • Manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel
  • 8-way power front seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats

How intuitive is the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe’s infotainment unit?

The base 2014 Camaro iterations feature a 6-speaker set up with a CD player, auxiliary audio input jack, and satellite radio. Buyers looking for touchscreens can opt for 1LT that offers a 7-inch unit with smartphone integration that makes life easier. The 2LT trim favors the enthusiasts that love to jiggle the cabin with heavy beats music as it features a 9-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system. Besides, the upper trims offer customizable performance mapping.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 6-speaker sound system with a CD player
  • Auxiliary audio input jack
  • Satellite radio
  • 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone app integration (Chevy's "MyLink")
  • Bluetooth audio connectivity
  • 9-speaker Boston audio system

Exterior
7.8/10

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro coupe has refreshed exteriors but the looks still offer the intimidating front fascia and sporty side stance. The front grille is more narrow with the bow-tie Chevrolet emblem embossed right in the center. The bulging hood contours, strong bodylines on the side, beefy wheel arches, and high-shouldered design make the Camaro look bold and aggressive.

The Nissan 370Z is smaller and more agile and impart nimbleness, without even jumping behind the wheels. While the Dodge Challenger is both longer and wider, gives a tough time to other muscle car rivals, in terms of macho looks and tantalizing silhouette. In terms of ride height, the Camaro rides lowest to the ground while the Mustang has the most practicality to offer over broken roads by offering a much higher stance.

Standout exterior features:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Automatic headlights
  • Heated mirrors
  • Xenon headlights

Safety
9.0/10

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro can thrill the driver with impeccable performance and handling. But it also keeps the occupants protected in case of any mishappening. The NHTSA has awarded a perfect 5-star overall score to the Camaro for 2014 model year. The IIHS is yet to test the Camaro though. Though there are not many amenities, the Camaro performs appreciably nevertheless.

Standout safety features:

  • Antilock disc brakes
  • Traction and stability control
  • OnStar telematics system
  • Ultrasonic Rear Park Assist
  • Rear view Vision Camera
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Final Verdict

The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro is a stunning, head-turning machine that can turn into a track monster in the top-spec. The wide array of powertrains lets the buyer choose their Camaro for their purpose, to either cruise in style or make the rivals eat its dust on the straight. The retro touches on both the interiors and exteriors make the Camaro look dynamic, but the modern sports car styling cues make it more desirable to a younger crowd.
