Overview

The Toyota 4Runner is one of the last midsize SUVs to offer genuine off-roading capabilities and target a specific audience. Boasting a rugged styling and high reliability, the 4Runner body-on-frame structure related to Tacoma, Land Cruiser Prado, and Lexus GX continues till now. New for 2017 are the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium trim levels. The 2017 4Runner lineup now starts with the SR5, the SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro models. The SUV is offered in rear- or four-wheel-drive configurations and the standard powertrain is a 4.0-liter 270 hp V-6 mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The maximum towing capacity on properly-equipped models is 5,000 pounds.

The new TRD Off-Road trims add unique interior and exterior badging, carbon fiber-look trim, and TRD red-letter embroidery on the front headrests for the Off-Road Premium model. To cater to the off-roading enthusiasts, 4Runner offers a Crawl Control feature and optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS). Though for the price range of $35,205 to 45,555, Toyota does not offer modern safety tech as most of the midsize rivals. Though the latest 4Runner models come equipped with a Toyota Safety Sense suite and a better interior, the alternatives to this SUV include the likes of Jeep Cherokee and Subaru Outback.

Buying Advice

For pure off-roading, go for the base SR5 trim level with the 4 wheel drive system. This trim has everything in it for taking you through the jungles, dirt marshes, the mountains and the rivers. Want your off-roading experience to be luxurious at the same time? Go for the Limited trim level with the 4 wheel drive system. All the trim levels are equally good at their price point but make sure that you get your car with the 4 wheel drive system. Otherwise, your 4Runner could just get called as 2Runner.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner comes in a midsize SUV with traditional body-on-frame architecture. Toyota offers five-passenger seating as standard, with an option of third-row. You will have an option to choose from the rear- or four-wheel-drive configurations but the 4.0-liter 270 hp V-6 is standard across the lineup.

For used car buyers, Toyota made no significant changes to the 2018 4Runner, so sticking to the 2017 model may save you bucks.<oreover, the cost of ownership of 2017 4Runner is expected around $25,000 over the course of five years which includes the cost to insure, fuel, repair, and maintain the vehicle.

Features
8.0/10

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner is offered in six trim levels, starting with the SR5, the SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro models. The price range from $35,205 for the SR5 RWD up to 45,555 for the Limited 4WD.

Among the 2017 4Runner trims, the SR5, SR5 Premium, and Limited are oriented more toward passengers and mostly differ in the cabin quality. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is available in each. The 4Runner TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro trim levels are outfitted for serious off-roading. All three come standard with four-wheel drive, along with components like a locking rear differential, crawl control, off-road tires, and heavy-duty shocks.

We Recommend

If you travel mostly on civilized roads or on-road driving is your need, then the 4Runner SR5 will be an excellent value for you. Its standard features include a 6.1-inch touch screen with Entune multimedia, a rearview camera, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth, and a power rear liftgate.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The EPA estimates the 2017 4Runner's fuel economy ratings at 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, which is one of the lowest in the class. The 4Runner’s five-speed automatic transmission is the main cause that hinders its fuel efficiency.

Model 2017 Toyota 4Runner 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2017 Subaru Outback
MPG (city) 17 19 20
MPG (highway) 21 26 27
MPG (combined) 18 21 22

If you go with the Grand Cherokee or Outback, you can save on fuel otherwise the 4Runner's standard powertrain is a bit gas-guzzler. The real-time MPG ratings may drop further than the EPA estimates, moreover, the 4WD configuration also drops the ratings.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2017 4Runner's interior has standard seating for five on cloth upholstery. Both front and rear seats provide adequate comfort and support to passengers as well as have plenty of legroom. With its optional third-row seating, you can carry up to seven people. By comparison, the 4Runner has less second-row legroom than its rivals, and its third-row seats are pretty cramped, good for kids only. The aging 4Runner features low-quality materials and dated layout design, which are the interior's biggest drawbacks.

Toyota 4Runner, however, is highly functional as the cabin has oversized buttons and knobs, simple and clear instrumentation, and a logical control layout. Though some controls on Limited trims including seat heating and ventilation dials are haphazardly placed, the 4Runner is easy to live with.

The dimension of the 4Runner is similar to that of Highlander but both cater to different audiences. For a rugged adventure, Toyota offers all required mechanical and interior equipment but for on-road driving the rivals offer better space and more comfort in modern style. In terms of convenience features, even the base 4Runner comes with a decent list of interior features.

2017 4Runner Infotainment System

The standard infotainment system uses a small 6.1-inch touch screen, certainly smaller by modern standards. The infotainment is straightforward and easy to use, and 4Runner has niceties such as Bluetooth, satellite radio, a USB port, a rearview camera, Siri-compatible voice-recognition system, a 120-volt, and multiple 12-volt power outlets.

The Physical buttons and turning knobs make common adjustments easy but the screen suffers from sun glare. Toyota does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in its vehicle lineup citing privacy concerns. The available 15-speaker JBL premium audio system sounds good.

Interior Features

Some of the cool goodies offered on the inside of the Toyota 4Runner are listed below.

  • Leather-crafted steering wheel with tilt/telescopic adjustment.
  • Fabric trimmed front seats.
  • 8-way power-adjusted driver’s seat with power lumbar support.
  • Adjustable front passenger seats.
  • Optional SofTex-trimmed heated driver seats.

2017 4Runner Cargo Capacity

The 4Runner provides generous amounts of cargo room, rated at 47.2 cu. ft. behind the second row. Fold the rear seat down and the cargo space expands to 88.8 cu. ft. Apart from the generous cargo volume, the 4Runner has a flat load floor and a wide tailgate opening. Toyota offers a power liftgate as standard. An optional sliding cargo floor helps to make loading heavier items easier.

Within the cabin, the 4Runner has generous small storage options as well, including a sizable glove box, a large center console bin, and trays carved into each door panel. All passengers get at least one cupholder and one bottle holder.

The 4Runner's large dimensions translate into a roomy cabin and spacious cargo area. For hauling, the 4Runner exceeds its rivals including Outback and Grand Cherokee. However, with the optional third row, the 4Runner will not offer much cargo space.

2017 4Runner Dimensions and Weight

With the last refresh in 2014, the Toyota 4Runner still has a commanding presence on the road with its rugged looks. Sticking to the traditional SUV roots, the 4Runner has a truck front-end and spacious wagon body. Adding to its brawny looks are its high ground clearance and big tires. Though the SR5 and TRD trims have a lot in common, the TRD Pro trim adds its own grille with "Toyota" spelled out in big bold letters. The top-range Limited trim wears a lot of chrome and looks a bit more sophisticated.

Upfront, the hood is long and flat, and the windshield is relatively vertical in terms of its orientation. The outward visibility is great from the 4Runner, making it easy to maneuver and park. In terms of size, the 4Runner has a similar wheelbase as its sibling Toyota Highlander, but its body-on-frame construction easts a lot of space inside as compared to unibody construction. By comparison, the 4Runner is the longest and the tallest car in the competition.

The 2017 4Runner is equipped with Toyota's Star Safety System, vehicle stability control, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist. Driver, front passenger, and driver and passenger side and knee airbags are standard, as well as a curtain airbag for all rows. The Limited trim adds Safety Connect system which offers emergency assistance, stolen vehicle locator, roadside assistance, and automatic collision notification.

2017 Toyota 4runner Vs Jeep Grand Cherokee

If you want an off-road-ready SUV, there is no better option than Toyota 4Runner or Jeep Grand Cherokee.  However, as you enter the city limits, the Jeep has a more comfortable ride quality than the Toyota. Also, the Jeep has an upper hand in terms of cushy ride, upscale interior, and one of the best infotainment systems. Though the Grand Cherokee offers seating for five passengers only, the 4Runner offers an optional third-row or as much cargo space.

The overall best pick would be the Jeep if you crave a plush ride and want an SUV that can also be your daily driver. On the other hand, the Jeep is no match to the off-road prowess and reliability of the Toyota 4Runner.

2017 Toyota 4runner Vs Subaru Outback

In the midsize segment, the Subaru Outback makes lesser horsepower yet offers better driving dynamics and acceleration than the Toyota 4Runner. In size, the Subaru has standard seating for five whereas 4Runner can seat up to seven with the optional third row. The ride quality on pavements is much comfortable in the Outback than in the 4Runner. However, the Subaru is no match to the Toyota in the off-roading adventure.

The Subaru Outback is a better choice for daily driving otherwise, for the off-roading purpose, you should certainly look towards the Toyota 4Runner.

Final Verdict

A big chunky car built to fulfil all your offroad fantasies, the Toyota 4Runner is a car that can, as stated earlier, take you to any corner of the planet.

Should this be the vehicle of your choice for your next Himalayan expedition yes? Defintely yes.

Should you buy this car if you have to wade through the concrete jungle everyday to reach your office? Certainly not.

Should you buy this car? Largely depends on your motive and purpose behind shopping in this category.
