Overview

The Maxima is another sedan offering from Nissan but a rather more comfortable and stylish sedan than the rivals. This car once held the moniker of the "four-door sports car." The 2014 Maxima, however, seems more like a sleeker Altima with much better performance and styling and can now be called the “four-door coupe.” The 2016 Maxima is a really comfortable refined sedan with a flowing fluid-like unique design, a lot of features, and good quality interior.

Buying Advice

With the price difference between each of the trims not being too much and all of the line up coming in within a difference of only $10,000 price point, we would go for the fully loaded Platinum trim. It comes loaded with all the available goodies and is the car of the lineup that is more inclined towards performance.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The base model of the Maxima starts off at $32,510 and goes up to the price of $39,960 for the top-end Platinum trim. There are five different trims in between this not too far off price point, and that puts this car in contention against the likes of Chevrolet Impala and the Toyota Avalon. Continue with the article to know how it performs in front of its rivals in the segment.

Features
9.0/10

The 2016 Nissan Maxima starts off from a price point of $32,510, and for that price, we get the base S trim that offers pretty good features like an 8-way power driver’s seat, Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control, Bose Premium Audio System with eight speakers, and a lot more. The SV trim comes next and starts at the price of $34,490 and adds some features, including heated front seats and leather upholstery. The next trim level is the SL trim, which starts at $36,990 and adds some features such as Intelligent Cruise Control, 11 Speakers, Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

The fourth trim in the lineup is the SR, which is more performance-oriented and comes with a sport-tuned suspension, Integrated Dynamics-control Module with Active Ride Control, Active Trace Control, and Active Engine Brake, all of this at a price of $37,770. The topmost trim of the lineup is the Platinum, which costs $39,960 and is loaded with top of the line features like Premium Ascot leather-appointed seats with diamond-quilted leather inserts, a Memory System for driver’s seat, steering wheel, and outside mirrors, and Moving Object Detection along with other features.

We Recommend

With the price difference between each of the trims not being too much and all of the line up coming in within a difference of only $10,000 price point, we would go for the fully loaded Platinum trim. It comes loaded with all the available goodies and is the car of the lineup that is more inclined towards performance.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The Nissan Maxima S comes with a 3.5 L V6 mated to a CVT transmission churning out 300 hp of maximum power and 261 lb-ft of maximum torque. The Maxima takes 5.8 seconds to reach a speed of 60 mph and 14.3 seconds to cross the quarter-mile mark. The Maxima is limited to a top speed of 135 mph, making it the second fastest option after the Chevrolet Impala.

The sedan is a fun-to-drive machine, even though the CVT gearbox does hold back in giving the feel of aggressive shifts. The SR trim, especially with its sports-tuned suspension, front performance chassis damper, and Integrated Dynamics-control Module which includes Active Ride Control, Active Trace Control, and Active Engine Brake, performs a lot better than the other trims and feels more planted and stable around the twisties.

The Chevy has the highest top speed of 153 mph, followed by the Maxima which is limited at 135 mph, and the Avalon which can get upto 130 mph.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The Maxima returns 22 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined mileage. These figures are no joke and are actually great, making the Maxima one of the most efficient cars in the segment. To add to this, the fuel tank is quite sizable at 18 gallons, and all of this together gives the Nissan a range of 96 miles in the city, 540 on the highway, and a combined range of 450 miles.

When compared with the rivals in the competition, the 2016 Maxima is the most fuel-efficient car here, it is followed by the Toyota that returns 24 mpg, while the Chevy comes in at last delivering 22 mpg. The Impala has the largest fuel tank of 18.5 gallons but fails to offer the best range, which is again dominated by Nissan as it offers a class-leading range of 450 miles combined.

Interior
8.0/10

The Nissan Maxima has a spacious cabin with seats that are comfortable and supportive. The materials used in the interior are definitely top-notch, and considering the fact that it is a Nissan, the interior feels more premium and expensive. There is a lot of space in the interior of the cabin. From the SL trim and above, there is Active Noise Cancelling on offer that ensures that the cabin is quiet. Various seat fabrics are available across the trims, ranging from cloth to premium Ascot leather-appointed seats with diamond-quilted Alcantara or leather inserts. The seats are also climate-controlled.

In terms of cargo capacity too, the Maxima falls short of its rivals, offering just 14.3 cu-ft, while the Toyota offers 16 cu-ft and the Impala offers significantly better cargo space, measuring 18.8 cu-ft. Few key interior features include-

  • Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) with in-cabin microfilter and rear vents
  • Premium Ascot leather-appointed seats with diamond-quilted Alcantara or leather inserts
  • 8-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support
  • Climate-controlled front seats (heated and cooled)

How intuitive is the 2016 Nissan Maxima infotainment unit?

The Nissan Maxima comes with a large instrument cluster display and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that houses a navigation system, a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, two USB ports, and an eight-speaker sound system with satellite radio, HD radio, and a six-disc CD changer. The higher trims get an 11-speaker Bose audio system. Other important infotainment features include-

  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • USB ports
  • Satellite radio
  • 8-Speaker audio system

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2016 Maxima looks great, although that said, the looks of the Maxima are entirely subjective. Some might seem to like the curves, lines, and grille as attractive and many find it bizarre. The Nissan Maxima, with a curb weight of 3,471 lbs, is lighter than the curb weight of the Chevrolet Impala in the competition. The Maxima has a ground clearance of 5.3 inches, which is the lowest in the competition.

Safety
9.9/10

The Nissan Maxima comes with a lot of safety features as standard like anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a rearview camera. Moving up to the higher trims, there is more advanced safety tech such as a blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, and a forward collision warning and mitigation system with automatic braking. The top-end Platinum trim gets a 360-degree parking camera system along with a moving object detection system. The Maxima stops from 60 mph at 122 ft, which is a good distance. Standout safety features include-

  • Traction Control
  • Stability Control
  • Rear-Cross Traffic Alert
  • Rearview Camera
  • 360 degree Camera
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring

Final Verdict

The 2016 iteration of the Nissan Maxima might be one of the best options in the segment. It offers decent space inside the cabin, and the premium features are also adequate for the segment. All in all, the Maxima is a good value for money option and a bang for the buck. The car is not too expensive, and the features and performance on offer are tremendous for that price point.

Pros - ["Sun roof on it", "Gps/navigation", "Heated and cooled seats"]

Cons - ["Sits low to the ground", "Not that good on gas", "Black color"]

I love the car. Only flaws ive had so far is the sun roof had leaked. I've only had the car a month and i like everthing in it. Heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, sunroof, sirus xm radio, radio has xm channels, gps and navigation in it. Sun shade in the back window has alot of perks.

              My Nissan Max

Pros - ["*the color", "*the body style"]

Cons - ["*The radio", "*No tint on windos"]

Regardless of what anyone says I absolutely love my new Maxima. It drives smooth and is super comfortable, it got 31 mpg on the hwy and averages 24 in the city which is great in my opinion. I love the exterior and interior of this car from the moment I laid eyes on it I fell in love*With a weighty foot on the throttle, the transmission delivers simulated upshifts and also responds well to manual ...
