Buying Advice

With regard to the aforementioned feature table, it is quite evident that even the base variant has plenty of features. However, the SR trim adds some additional features like ventilated and heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and sport tuned suspension. To grab the SR variant would be a clever deal that offers excellent value for money.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

With a price tag of $36,990, the 2021 Nissan Maxima delivers a rewarding driving experience with its efficient 3.5-liter V6 engine and responsive handling. In addition, it meets your family's needs with its accommodating room for up to five, along with advanced safety, connectivity and convenience technologies. With rivals like the Toyota Avalon and Chrysler 300, it competes in a hot segment.

Features
7.0/10

Except for some new features, the Nissan Maxima largely remains unchanged for 2021, although it is offered in a new trim line. Starting at $36,990, there are 3 trim levels to choose from - SV, SR, and Platinum. Additionally, Nissan has launched an exclusive 40th anniversary package to commemorate the Maxima's rich history. However, this 40th anniversary package is only compatible with Platinum trims. Across the lineup, there have been no changes to the powertrain and mechanicals from the prior model.

A comprehensive selection of tech, safety, and driver assistance features is standard across all variants. Some standard features include Dual-zone automatic climate control, Leather upholstery, Keyless entry and ignition, 8-inch touchscreen, 8-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. 4.0/10

Despite packing a potent V6 engine under the hood, the 2021 Nissan Maxima achieves decent mpg numbers. It is capable of averaging 20 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highways, and a combined 24 mpg. With a fuel tank capacity of 18 gallons, the 2021 Nissan Maxima offers a combined range of 432 miles.

With the highest MPG ratings among its competitors, the Toyota Avalon keeps making a strong case for being the best value for money sedan. The Chrysler 300 consumes the most gas as reflected and features the bulkiest fuel tank. Although the fuel economy of the Nissan Maxima is mediocre, it could be quite adequate for the majority of its audience.

Interior
6.0/10

The 2021 Nissan Maxima interior offers luxury elegance and technology in a sophisticated cabin. The instrument panel has an uncomplicated design for easy everyday use with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and 7-inch full-color driver information display. The center console houses an 8-inch infotainment screen for controlling smartphone and vehicle functions. Besides being heated and cooled, the seats feature a power-adjustable system with 10-way power settings and three-person memory. On the dashboard, we find a generous use of soft-touch plastic, which feels nice and rich.

Five passengers can be comfortably accommodated within Nissan's 2021 Maxima. There is decent headroom for front passengers while rear passengers are treated to decent head and shoulder room with cramped legroom. Dual-tone leather upholstery will also be featured in the cabin if you opt for the 40th Anniversary Edition trim. In terms of cargo space, the vehicle offers 14.3 cubic feet of luggage space and can be further extended with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2021 Nissan Maxima exterior and styling come with an array of advanced, performance-focused features. Like the V-motion grille which shows off a sporty, sharp look. Or the boomerang-shaped headlights that frame the large chrome Nissan badge. Its sleek and sharp styling, sets it apart from every other sports sedan. With numerous color options to choose from, you will be able to find a Maxima that meets your style.

The bold character lines, more rounded edges and striking front grille are purposely designed to give Nissan's most popular sedan a look that commands attention. Its abundant air intake not only looks good but also improves cabin cooling. Our attention is drawn to the beautiful 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires on the sides. A sleek and stylish LED taillight remains the same at the back, as do the quad exhausts. With the Floating-Roof design as the focal point, the Nissan engineers did an admirable job in terms of design.

Avalon is positioned in the middle with its balanced body measurements. Compared with its rivals, the Nissan Maxima is compact and lightest. However, the Nissan Maxima stands out as far as styling is concerned, with its one-of-a-kind design.

2021 Nissan Maxima vs 2021 Toyota Avalon

This is a pair of cars that do the job well and get the job done efficiently. The Maxima, however, is a bit more expensive. With potent V6 engines, a long list of standard safety features, and above-average starting prices, both the Toyota Avalon and the Maxima pack a punch. The Avalon, however, has a larger trunk and back seat, as well as a more responsive steering system, which makes it a better option to consider.

2021 Nissan Maxima vs 2021 Chrysler 300

Despite having been redesigned for 2021, the Chrysler 300 will remain the long, luxurious sedan that it has always been. Interestingly, it is the biggest one here, having the largest cabin and most cargo space compared to the Maxima. However, the Chrysler 300's only distinguishing feature is its interior and this is where the 2021 Nissan Maxima wins. Nisan offers a more dynamic and high-quality drive.

Final Verdict

The new 2021 Nissan Maxima is a very impressive mid-size sedan. Inside and out, this car is attractive, well-appointed and enjoyable to drive. This is an excellent value in our opinion. Most buyers, however, will find that value to be insufficient to justify the price jump between the base model and the Platinum model. (and if people are okay with buying the lower trims then they can likely save over $5,000). There are few better options to choose from at the same price point for those seeking the high trim line, Platinum.
