Mazda gives an option on the 2016 CX-5 to choose from either a 2.0L Inline-4 engine with the Sport FWD models or the 2.5L Inline-4 engine offered with the higher variants. The base engine is underpowered: it produces only 155 hp and has a torque output of 150 lb-ft. The 2.5L engine is more powerful and produces 184 hp along with 185 lb-ft of torque. There is a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission on offer.

The MINI offers the most front row headroom and the RAV4 has the most front row legroom. At the rear, the Mazda has the most headroom and legroom as well. The Toyota RAV4 boasts the best in class boot space with a capacity of 38.4 cu.ft. The Mazda is second, and the cargo is extremely large when compared to its rivals.
