Overview

The Kia Sportage fits aptly into the compact SUV segment by catering to a class of family buyers who prioritize space, upscale and stylish cabin, and pleasant driving dynamics over every other aspect. The price for the 2016 Kia Sportage starts at $22,150 for its base variant, and the current model year undergoes minor changes to the trim levels, making the SUV even more appealing. The 2016 Sportage gains a rearview camera and automatic headlights as part of the LX Popular package while the EX Premium package now adds the Infinity premium audio system, fog lights, integrated turn signals, and a cooled glovebox.

This two-row Kia Sportage slots below the larger Sorento and offers a strong engine lineup, sporty handling, and above-average reliability ratings. The crossover is available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations. Two four-cylinder engines are available: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 182 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque in the LX and EX trims, and a 2.0-liter turbo rated at 260 hp and 269 lb-ft in the top-of-the-line SX. A six-speed automatic is a standard across the range. The fuel economy is decent but falls behind the top-rated rivals, at 21/28 mpg city/highway for FWD LX and 19/26 mpg with all-wheel drive. The Sportage turbo returns 20/26 mpg in the front-drive guise and 19/25 mpg with all-wheel drive.

The only complaint we have with the 2016 Kia Sportage is its subpar cargo capacity and harsh ride quality. Compare to its rivals, the 2016 Sportage looks dated and is slotted for a redesign for the 2017 model year. Popular rivals such as Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape offer better ride quality and space inside the cabin. Even after that, the Kia Sportage makes a strong value statement with its well-designed interiors, ample standard features, and a class-leading powertrain warranty.

2016 Kia Sportage for sale

The 2016 Kia Sportage starts from $22,150 for the entry-level LX FWD and the prices go up to $$31,490 for the full-loaded SX Turbo AWD. The optional all-wheel-drive system costs $1,500 extra on any Sportage. The used 2016 Sportage is available for sale at an average price range of $13,300 to about $22,000, depending on the vehicle's mileage, condition, and location.

Buying Advice

The 2016 Kia Sportage EX adds 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, a power-adjustable driver seat, and a plethora of other features under $30,000 whether you go with the front-wheel-drive or the all-wheel-drive configuration, providing the best value for the money spent.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2016 Kia Sportage offers unique and stylish looks along with sporty handling. It sports a responsive steering system that makes it an agile handler. The only major downside is that it sacrifices some interior space in favor of exterior aesthetics. It competes head-on with the likes of the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Apart from this, the major selling points of the 2016 Kia Sportage include Kia's certified pre-owned program for vehicles five years old or less and with fewer than 60,000 miles. Kia’s certified pre-owned vehicles receive the balance of the original 10-year/100,000-mile new-car powertrain warranty as well as a one-year/12,000-mile comprehensive Platinum warranty on non-powertrain parts. Also, the 2016 Kia Sportage earned the top score of Good in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the FWD Sportage an overall safety rating of four out of five stars, while the AWD model earned a five-star overall rating.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2016 Kia Sportage’s gas mileage feels substandard and underwhelming. As per EPA estimates, the base 2.4L inline-4 engine does 21 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined which feels low for an SUV of its class. With the turbocharged engine option, the combined efficiency further tends to fall and is rated at 22 miles per gallon of fuel only.

The tank, however, can hold 15.3 gallons of fuel which will set you up for a long road trip to where ever you want without worrying about gas stations along the way. In the city, the 2016 Kia Sportage LX averages 321 miles in a single fuel refill, which drastically increases to 428 miles on the highway, yet it remains the lowest in the segment.

When compared to the competitors, the 2016 Honda CR-V is the most frugal option and averages 29 MPG, while the Mitsubishi and Ford lag behind averaging 27 and 25 MPG, respectively. However, the 2016 Outlander is fitted with the largest fuel tank in the segment that can hold 16.6-gallons of fuel, and consequently, it covers the highest range of 415 and 515 miles in the city and on the highway.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2016 Kia Sportage interiors feel less commodious than its rivals. It sacrifices the interior space in favor of the exterior design to keep it more aesthetically pleasing to the eye which results in a lack of legroom in the rear seats. Otherwise, the cabin is a nice place to be in, it provides superior comfort and the firm ride quality won't annoy you as much. The Sportage offers a modest 54.6-cubic-foot cargo space with the rear seats folded, still, Honda CR-V offers over 70 cubic feet of the cargo hold.

The 2016 Kia Sportage’s problems are not just limited to its rear-seat space. Its cargo capacity is somewhat disappointing behind the rear seats it's at 26.1 cubic feet and with the rear seats folded the cargo volume is 54.6 cubic feet which is less than almost all of the vehicles in this category of compact crossovers.

  • Air Conditioning
  • Cloth/Leather Upholstery
  • Cruise Control
  • Tilt and Telescopic Steering Wheel
  • Manual/automatic seat adjustment

How intuitive is the infotainment system of the 2016 Kia Sportage?

The infotainment system is well laid out and quite intuitive. Each knob and button that surrounds the system is functional and adds to the usability of the central touchscreen. While the 7-inch display unit is the better option, the base variant receives a 4.3-inch unit. Both the 2016 Kia Sportage SX and EX trims also make use of Kia’s UVO telematics system which allows for music streaming and voice control.

Some other features include:

  •  Optional Infinity premium sound system
  •  USB Port
  • Satellite Radio
  •  Navigation System
  • 6-speaker sound system
  •  Auxiliary Audio Input

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2016 Sportage is one of the most stylish and uniquely designed crossovers in the market. The front and rear fasciae are like nothing else. The unique signature Kia grille and the sharp angular lines give it an appealing look and it will surely be liked by those who aren't fans of traditional crossover design language. The 17/18-inch wheels help amplify the design characteristics.

Though smaller both in dimensions and visually, the 2016 Kia Sportage has a traditional SUV feel to it. It stands tall and upright with a total height and ground clearance of 64.4 and 6.8 inches, respectively. It is 174.8 inches long with a wheelbase of 103.9 inches. What does come as a relief, however, is that it is the widest SUV in the segment measuring 73 inches, which allows for higher shoulder room on the inside.

  • Sunroof
  • LED Daytime Running Lights
  • Fog Lamps
  • Tiger-nose Kia Grille
  • Chrome exterior trim

Safety
6.0/10

When it comes to safety, there is no doubting the capabilities of the SUV. It packs a sturdy build quality with abundant safety features and scores the best possible ratings of 5-stars and Good in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA and IIHS, respectively. Even, the recalls on 2016 Kia Sportage are also limited to just one, which is suggestive of its potential.

Some salient safety features include:

  • Vehicle Stability Management
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Antilock Disc Brakes
  • Integrated Turn Signal Mirrors (available with SX trim only)
  • Traction Control

2016 Kia Sportage vs 2016 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V ranks among the best in the segment and all for the right reasons. It gets the most practical and one of the comfiest cabins in the class along with getting a segment-leading cargo capacity too. On the performance side, the SUV fares better than the Sportage with more power and torque on tap. Surprisingly, the CR-V is more fuel-efficient too despite having more oomph under the hood. Overall, the CR-V comes out as the better choice when compared to the Sportage.

2016 Kia Sportage vs 2016 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 sets itself apart from most of the crossovers in its class with a radically different design and athletic handling, a set of uncommon traits for a mass-market crossover. To attribute to its sporty handling, it gets a slightly bigger and more powerful engine under its hood too. On the practical aspect, it triumphs over the Sportage with its way bigger cargo space and an equally spacious cabin. Also, the interior design is better on the CX-5. To conclude, the Mazda CX-5 becomes a better alternative to the Kia Sportage.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Kia Sportage is a perfect mix of performance, practicality, and stylish looks without being too pricey. As compared to its rivals it offers quick acceleration and sporty handling and the SX with the turbocharged motor is a serious performer. Overall, if you want a somewhat practical crossover SUV that is also exciting to drive and pleasing to look at, the Kia Sportage is your answer. The 2016 Sportage's five-year cost of ownership ranges up to $22,870, which is on the lower end of the spectrum.
