Overview

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is one of the classy choices in the luxury midsize SUV segment. The Range Rover name brings excellent off-road capabilities and you do not need to worry about the terrain when you are driving a Range Rover Sport. The off-road capabilities of the Range Rover Sport come without any compromises on the practicality aspect. The interior of the Range Rover Sport is good enough to take on any other luxury SUV in its class.

Buying Advice

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a luxury SUV with a pretty impressive list of standard safety features inside the cabin. We recommend going for the base trim level with the HSE optional package which further adds 20-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, foglights, upgraded perforated leather upholstery, heated front seats, and wood or metal interior trim to the package. You can go for the Supercharged trim level if you want a more powerful supercharged engine.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport comes in either a two-row or three-row seating configuration. The exterior looks of the Range Rover Sport are also one of the things that go in its favor. The SUV looks modern and stylish from the outside, retaining the SUV DNA. The Range Rover Sport has some downsides compared to its rivals like its lower reliability scores. Still, it is hard to beat the SUV considering the combination of capabilities and class. The Range Rover Sport competes against the likes of the Audi Q7, the BMW X5, and the Porsche Cayenne.

Features
9.9/10

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport comes with two engine options depending on the trim level you buy. The base SE trim comes standard with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine. The engine produces a maximum power output of 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. The Supercharged trim level comes with a more powerful 5.0-liter V8 engine and produces 510 hp of power and 461 lb-ft of torque.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport comes with potent powertrain options. The base V6 engine has good enough power for its class and the car moves seamlessly. The Range Rover Sport with the base engine can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds. The V8 engine further improves the performance and it can complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 4.6 seconds. The handling of the Range Rover Sport is not athletic, but it feels nimble to drive, and the high-speed stability is also good.

The BMW X5 is the fastest SUV in the segment in terms of outright acceleration as it can complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 5.6 seconds. The Porsche Cayenne also offers similar performance taking 6 seconds to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Audi Q7 and the Range Rover Sport are the slowest in the class taking identical time to reach from 0 to 60 mph.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Potent powertrain option, heavy curb weight, 4WD drivetrain, and all the capabilities that come with the Range Rover Sport are not the ideal combination for good fuel efficiency. The Range Rover Sport with its base engine manages to return 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The fuel economy drops to 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway with the V8 engine option. The fuel tank capacity is quite large at 27.7-gallon and it offers a combined driving range of 526 miles.

The BMW X5 beats the rivals taking the first spot in the fuel efficiency department too. It is quite impressive as it is also the fastest SUV in its class if we consider the base engine option of all the SUVs. Surprisingly, the Range Rover Sport comes next at the second position. The largest fuel tank of the Range Rover Sport allows it to deliver the best driving range in its class. Both the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne manage a combined mileage of 18 MPG and also have a similar tank size of 26.4-gallons, which allows them to average a higher range than the segment leader as well.

Interior
9.0/10

The Land Rover is a brand that we connect to for its off-road prowess, but luxury is never compromised inside the cabin of their SUVs. The Range Rover Sport with its complete redesign this model year brings an even more upscale interior design. You can get the Range Rover Sport in either two-row or three-row seating configurations. The space inside the front row is on premium. The design and quality of materials used on the dashboard and other driver touch-points will also impress the buyers.

The commanding driving position gives you the feel of a true SUV from the driver’s seat. The controls for the driver are also well laid out and are easy to use. Space is not an issue in the rear seats either, but if you go for the three-row variant, do not expect practical space in there. It also makes the cargo capacity of the Range Rover Sport less practical.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport leads the chart when it comes to the overall space inside the first row of the cabin. The cargo area is also the best in the class if you consider the space behind the second-row seats. The addition of third-row makes the cargo space cramped. The Audi Q7 is the only SUV that comes with only a seven-seat configuration.

Standout interior features:

  • 16 -way power front seats
  • Cooled front seats
  • Premium leather upholstery
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Three-zone climate control
  • Cruise control

2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Infotainment System

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport features a pretty good set of technology inside its cabin. The Range Rover Sport features an 8-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system. It is one of the more advanced infotainment systems, but it might confuse many people. The people who are not much into the tech will prefer staying away from it most times. The Range Rover Sport also comes with an HD radio, Satellite radio, and an 8-speaker audio system as standard. You can get the 19-speaker Meridian sound system if you want a better music experience.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • HD radio
  • Satellite radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • USB/iPod integration
  • 19-speaker Meridian sound system

Exterior
9.0/10

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport looks like a big SUV from the outside. It carries forward the signature Range Rover look to keep it in line with the other newer models in the lineup. The exterior styling of the Range Rover Sport looks one of the most appealing in its class. The sophisticated front grille design with Range Rover badging right above it gives it a good presence. The Range Rover Sport forms its side and rear looks like a proper SUV with its simple and box-like structure.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport and the Porsche Cayenne share the same length which is shorter than the other two SUVs. Cayenne has the shortest wheelbase in the segment followed by the Range Rover Sport. The Audi Q7 has the biggest dimensions in its class and it also gets the longest wheelbase. The Audi Q7 is also the heaviest of them all.

Standout exterior wheels

  • 19” to 21” alloy wheels
  • Bi-xenon headlights
  • Adjustable air suspension
  • Keyless entry/ignition

Safety
8.0/10

The Land Rover is known for making rugged SUVs that can go anywhere. Along with all the capabilities that it brings to the table, the rugged design also brings safety for their SUVs. The Range Rover Sport has not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, safety should not be a concern for the buyers considering the tough build quality and the list of standard safety features it offer.

Standout safety features:

  • Stability control
  • Traction control
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Electronic brakeforce distribution
  • Blind-spot warning
  • Emergency braking assist

Final Verdict

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport offers a perfect blend of capabilities and luxury in a single package. The cabin offers great practicality and comfort for five passengers. The commanding driving position with the ability to take it anywhere makes it a great choice. The only downside to the SUV is its low-reliability scores. Otherwise, the Range Rover Sport has performed well in every other aspect with its appealing exterior style and potent powertrain options. It is an easy recommendation if you are looking for a luxury midsize SUV.
