Overview

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type remains largely unchanged from the previous year’s model. There are some changes for the 2019 model like the standard equipment list is revised and it also gets Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as an option now. The Jaguar F-Type comes with a variety of engine options to choose from and starts at an MSRP of $60,750. It can go all the way up to $122,750 depending on the engine and trim of your choice. The Jaguar F-Type drives like a sports car very well, yet the competition is very tough in the segment.

Buying Advice

The base trim of the Jaguar F-Type is enough for your daily tasks, but it will not be able to deliver the thrill of driving. You can prefer upgrading to the P340 trim as it doesn’t cost that much and comes with a more powerful V6 engine for a better driving experience. The upgrade to P380 is very expensive and we only recommend it if you want to buy an AWD variant.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The standard engine on offer is a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 engine which can be upgraded to two different powertrains of a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine. You also have an option for the mighty 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine which costs more than a hundred thousand dollars. The 2019 Jaguar F-Type competes against the likes of Chevrolet Corvette Stingray w/1LT coupe, Dodge Challenger R/T ScatPack coupe, and the Porsche 718 Cayman.

Features

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type comes in 6 different trim options to choose from based on your requirements. There are three different engine options and four different powertrain options for the 2019 Jaguar F-Type. The base P300 F-Type is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 engine and is only available in rear-wheel drive. It comes with all the standard features like the updated 10” touchscreen infotainment system, LED headlamps with LED DRLs, 12-way Power-adjustable seats with memory function, and 18” alloy wheels to name a few. You can get all these features with a more powerful 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine in the P340 trim.

Things start to get interesting from the P380 trim as it gets more power under the hood with the same 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that comes with the P340 option. This is also the entry trim if you want to buy an AWD drivetrain variant of the 2019 F-Type. It also gets adaptive suspension and bigger 19” wheels with upgraded braking hardware. The top two options R and SVR get better features and more power but become very expensive.

We recommend

Engine and Performance
9.1/10

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type gets a standard 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 engine. The engine produces a peak power of 296 horsepower and a peak torque of 295 lb-ft. The engine produces sufficient power for your daily drive and is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It takes 5.5 seconds to reach 0 to 60 mph and the quarter-mile comes in 14.1 seconds. Although the acceleration is good, the competition offers better acceleration figures. If you want more performance, then you have the option to upgrade to a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that produces 340 horsepower.

The same engine is also available in a different powertrain option with the P380 trim where it produces a healthy 380 horsepower. The upgrade to the 380 hp engine seems the most significant as you can not feel much difference between the standard four-cylinder engine and the 340 hp V6 engine. The most powerful engine on offer with the 2019 Jaguar F-Type is a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine that produces 550 horses with the R trim and 580 horsepower with the SVR trim.

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type has multiple engine options on offer to cater to different types of audiences. If we consider the base engine of all the vehicles in the segment then the F-Type produces the least power and takes the highest time to reach 0 to 60 mph. The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray w/1LT coupeis the fastest of the lot at 3.7 seconds in the 0 to 60 mph run.

How well does the 2019 Jaguar F-Type handle?

Jaguars are known for their sporty handling and engaging drive experience and the 2019 Jaguar F-Type is no exception. It handles very well for the most part. The driving position is very comfortable and changing lanes is very easy. The steering wheels lack the heft and feel light at higher speeds, but it is a communicative steering wheel. The steering responds very precisely to your inputs and it does not feel confused at any point. The only thing that the steering lacks is the feeling that you expect from it.

The suspension is tuned on the firmer side but it doesn’t feel uncomfortable. It soaks all the bumps very well and doesn’t let the filter through the cabin. The advantage of the stiff suspension is that it drives well on the trachs and feels stable at high speeds. Still, the competition gets an edge over the F-Type in handling.

How good are the brakes of the 2019 Jaguar F-Type?

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type comes with standard brake rotors of 14-inch for front wheels and 12.8-inch brakes for rear wheels. The brakes perform well enough for the segment but it is nothing extraordinary as the competition offers better braking performance. The feel of the brakes is progressive and gives good confidence to the drivers. The brakes also change depending on the trim you select. The standard brakes are good enough to stop the 2019 Jaguar F-Type from 60 to 0 mph in 101 feet.

The fastest car to stop from 60 to 0 mph in the competition is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray w/1LT coupe and the Porsche 718 Cayman coupe. It takes only 95 feet to come to a halt from 60 miles per hour for both the coupes. The 2019 Jaguar F-Type comes in the middle while the Dodge Challenger R/T ScatPack coupe comes last at 108 feet.

Fuel Economy
7.8/10

If fuel economy is what you are looking for then the 2019 Jaguar F-Type will not disappoint you at all. It offers the best fuel economy figures in the segment leaving all the competitors behind. The 2019 Jaguar F-Type delivers 23 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and an impressive 26 mpg of combined fuel economy. The fuel economy will change depending on the engine and drivetrain that you choose. The 2019 Jaguar F-Type comes with 18.5 gallons fuel tank and provides a range of 555 miles on the highway.

The 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T ScatPack coupe offers the least fuel economy in the segment with a combined fuel economy of 17 mpg while the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray w/1LT coupe does slightly better with a combined fuel economy of 19 mpg. The 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman coupe offers a good fuel economy and delivers 24 mpg of combined fuel economy, but it also comes with the smallest fuel tank. The 2019 Jaguar F-Type outperforms all the competitors here and delivers the best range.

Interior
9.1/10

The interior of the 2019 Jaguar F-Type feels premium but the space inside the cabin feels compromised as soon as you enter the cabin. The front seats are good enough to accommodate two people but the lack of space is still noticeable. The materials used inside the interior are of premium quality and you will be impressed with the British craftsmanship inside the cabin.

The controls for the drivers are well within the reach and there are no ergonomic issues for the driver. The standard 12-way power-adjustable seats with memory function offer good support to the driver and co-passenger. The interior is wrapped inside the leather and the seats also come with microsuede upholstery.

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type offers the least trunk space inside the cabin. None of the cars in the segment can be termed as practical vehicles, but they are not meant for that. The 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T ScatPack coupe is the only car in the segment to accommodate five passengers inside the cabin. It also comes with the best trunk capacity in the segment. Standout interior features of the 2019 Jaguar F-Type:

  • 12-way power-adjustable seats with memory function
  • Automatic air conditioning
  • Leather and microsuede upholstery
  • Power Tilt/Telescoping Steering Column
  • Remote Keyless Entry
  • Heated and ventilated front seats (available)

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type gets an all-new bigger 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The screen looks fine and the visibility is also good but the user interface has the scope of improvement. Common features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available as an option only which is a big disappointment for the price point. The audio system is not compromised though, and you get a 10-speaker Meridian audio system as standard across the trims. There is no voice recognition on offer too. Standout infotainment features of the 2019 Jaguar F-Type:

  • 10” touchscreen infotainment system
  • 10-speaker Meridian audio system
  • Navigation Pro system
  • Sirius XM Satellite Radio & HD radio
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (optional)

Exterior
9.1/10

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type remains unchanged from the previous year’s model. It gets the same classic Jaguar grille on the front with LED headlights and daytime running lights. The front hood gets sharp curves to make it sportier. From the side, you witness 18” alloy wheels with a sloping roofline that makes the coupe look even more aggressive. On the rear, it gets LED taillamps that look sleek and stylish on the back. The center-mounted exhaust also compliments the sporty look of the car from behind.

The 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman coupe is the shortest car in the segment and it also has the shortest wheelbase in the segment. The Jaguar F-Type comes right after the 718 Cayman in terms of compactness. The wheelbase is also very short and you can feel the lack of it inside the cabin. The 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T ScatPack coupe is bigger in dimensions than the rest competitors in every way. It has the longest wheelbase at 116.2 feet. Standout exterior features of the 2019 Jaguar F-Type:

  • Standard 18” alloy wheels
  • LED Headlights and DRLs
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Heated side mirrors
  • Limited-slip differential
  • Active sports exhaust

Safety
8.1/10

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety yet. It comes equipped with many standard safety tech and driver assistance features. The F-Type is not a great option for young children as there is no back seat available in the car. It gets the standard equipment like automated emergency braking, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.

The standard safety tech and driver assistance features are even better in the higher trims. You can also upgrade to the optional safety features for your car from the available list. Here are some of the optional and standard safety features listed below for your reference:

  • Lane-departure warning
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Self-parking assist
  • Traffic Sign Recognition and Adaptive Speed Limiter

Competition

2019 Jaguar F-Type vs 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray offers a lot more cars for the price. It comes with a more powerful standard V8 engine and the acceleration is also good. The looks are also not compromised at all from the outside. Still, the Jaguar F-Type stays ahead in driving dynamics and it is not easy to match the driving characteristics of the Jaguar. The Chevy Corvette Stingray offers more space but the F-Type compensates for that with a more premium interior.

2019 Jaguar F-Type vs 2019 Dodge Challenger R/T ScatPack coupe

The 2019 Dodge Challenger is the most practical car in the comparison here. It is the only car in our comparison that can accommodate 5 people in the cabin instead of 2 on the other cars. The base engine is more powerful and offers better acceleration than the base engine of the F-Type. Still, you can feel the quirks of a muscle car with the Challenger as it doesn’t even come closer to the F-Type in terms of handling and luxurious feel.

2019 Jaguar F-Type vs 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman

The Porsche 718 Cayman offers slightly better performance compared to the Jaguar F-Type. The handling is also better with the Porsche 718 Cayman. Though it is the shortest car in the competition, it is wider than the Jaguar F-Type which feels comfortable from inside. Both these coupes are very close in every aspect and the choice depends on personal preference.

Final Verdict

Although the Jaguar F-Type is not the most practical option out there, it is a great car for those looking for a two-door coupe just for the sake of driving. The looks are also a crucial part as they will turn many eyes on the road. The steering lacks the required weight but it communicates well. There is no complaint in terms of handling and the ride quality is also not compromised. If you are looking for something similar then the 2019 Jaguar F-Type becomes a good choice for the price.
