Overview

The GranTurismo Convertible (GranCabrio) is almost a decade old and it is the part of the generation which was introduced in 2007. The Pininfarina designed convertible has now started to show its age. The GranTurismo Convertible benefits from Maserati's success on the race track for a very long time. Maserati has poured in their experience into developing this iconic car.

In its Sport trim, the Maserati GranCabrio produces more than 400 horsepower. Maserati is a tad slower when compared to the other exotic cars. Nevertheless, it gains advantage from its chassis and the engine placement behind the front axle to improve weight distribution. It is the luxury and agility where the GranTurismo really lives up to its name. It can give you the chills on a track, but it is best suited for spirited cruises along the back roads.

Buying Advice

The Sport trim is well-appointed with standard features. It shares the powertrain with the MC trim but improves upon the ride quality with its adaptive suspension dampers that provide better comfort and bring out the true potential of this luxury GT car.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Maserati GranCabrio comes with a sticker price of $150,380 and goes up to $162,880 for the MC trim. Add the optional features to this mix and the asking price for the Maserati can well up to the $200,000 mark. The newly updated cars for this price range are faster. Exotics like the 911 can easily do a sub-three second 0-60 mph. This Maserati is up against the Mercedes SL 550 roadster and the Jaguar F-Type, both of whom are known for exceptional performance and quality comforts.

Features

Maserati GranCabrio is offered in two trims: Sport and MC. Sport trim is well appointed with a long list of standard features. Sport trim is equipped with front and rear parking sensors, adaptive xenon headlights, interiors boast of leather upholstery, heated front seats, and an 8.4-inch Maserati infotainment system.

MC is the track variant of the GranCabrio which includes loses the adaptive suspension dampers for sportier handling. The interiors see the Maserati logo stitched on the headrests. The exterior receives a carbon fiber hood and chrome exhaust tips.

“Inside there is swathes of leather and polished wood crafted for the GranCabrio and is dominated by a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system, which is functional but lacks the refinement and ease of use that makes the BMW, Mercedes and Audi systems a doddle to use. There is also touches of Alcantara, including on the back of the paddle shifters.” -Autocar

Seating and Comfort

The interiors also follow the unique Italian styling. The seats are comfortable and offer good side bolstering to keep you tucked in while driving around the corners. The headrests and the steering wheel bear the trident logo. With the top down the interior comes together with the exterior body lines to enhance the uninterrupted feel.

Maserati GranCabrio can accommodate 4 people. The position of the seats is lower than expected and you have to sit in a knee-up position but that works fine. With the roof down, the Maserati is not about speed. The three-spoke steering wheel has improved grip for an engaging drive. The accelerator and brake pedals are finished in aluminum for lightness and better grip.

“For the GranCabrio MC, Maserati has grafted on new and more aggressive bumpers front and rear; the exhaust has been rearranged also, with a new spoiler completing the body changes. 20-inch wheels aping those of the MC Stradale distinguish the MC from the rest of the GranCabrio range as well.” -Autocar

Dimensions and Weight

The exterior design encapsulates two distinct elements of luxury and style. The front fascia portrays the signature deep cut oval grill that bears the trident logo. The combination of a front splitter and rear extractor increase down-force at a higher speed. The design tries to bring form and function closer to each other.

The Maserati GT is a product of Pininfarina design, one glance at the structure brings out admiration for its timelessness. In a world where automobile design is heading towards more aggressive and sharp lines, the Maserati GT wears a more elegant design.

GranCabrio weighs in at 4365 lbs. GranCabrio with its 194.2 inches of length will command some attention. GranCabrio stands at a height of 52.9 inches and offers a generous 5 inches of ground clearance. The better than average dimensions help to create more cabin space.

Maserati GranTurismo vs Mercedes-Benz SL550 Roadster

SL550 Roads comes at a lower price tag than the GranCabrio and the engine churns out a few extra horses. The Mercedes-Benz can do a 0-60 mph run within 4.3 seconds while the GranCabrio does it in 5 complete seconds. The Biturbo engine from Mercedes is more powerful and responsive.

Maserati GranTurismo vs Porsche 911 GTS Cabriolet

The 911 GTS is completely one and a half-second faster than the GranCabrio. Porsche manages this feat with a smaller engine than Maserati, but turbocharged. 911 GTS lacks rear 2 seats but Maserati offers them. The Porsche loses out on utility but poses some really great miles to the gallon numbers.

Maserati GranTurismo vs F-Type SVR Convertible

At $125,950 the Jaguar F-Type SVR Coupe is quite a merchandise. The SVR’s V8 fire-spitting engines are distinctly known for their horsepower and glorious sound. When it comes to the SVR, it difficult to ignore the complete package. The sensual curves, the radical splitters, the intimidating rear wing and the captivating sound from the V8. It is really too hard to resist.

Final Verdict

It’s been almost a decade since the GranCabrio was introduced, over the years there have changes to and now there are cars which are priced lesser and outperform the Maserati GranCabrio. And Maserati is in need of upgrading their GranTurismo line-up to meet the modern standards. No doubt that the GranTurismo Convertible still manages to captivate people with its opulent looks and exhilarating sound. But let’s face the truth, your money would be better spent elsewehere.
