Overview

Riding on the success of the A4 sedan, Audi brought the A5 coupe to offer something more interesting and exciting than the regular A4. The A5 is offered in a Coupe model, a Cabriolet model, and a Sportback model with a sportier design language its elder stablemate. The car is based on Volkswagen’s tried and tested Volkswagen Group MLB Evo platform which it shares with the A4 sedan as well.

Buying Advice

We will recommend buying the Audi A5 Coupe premium plus trim because it comes with sporty performance and convenient features like the Audi virtual cockpit, Audi MMI navigation plus system and also comes with performance upgrades like sport-tuned adaptive suspension and an upgraded rear differential for a minor price bump off only $4000. For adrenaline lovers, the top-end 2.9 TFSI Quattro model would suit perfectly.

Engine and Performance
7.3/10

In its base form, the 2019 Audi A5 engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged Inline-4 unit under the long sculpted hood which produces 252 horses and 273 lb-ft. of torque. The motor is mated to a 7-speed automatic S-Tronic gearbox which is a DCT (dual-clutch) system. The torque curve of the engine is very linear and there is negligible turbo lag. The gearbox is super smooth and precise. The shifts are quick and there are negligible head-nods. The engine has enough power to let you cruise comfortably on the highway at triple-digit speeds and still have enough power for quick overtakes. The negligible turbo lag helps greatly in stop-and-go traffic in the cities. The performance of the Audi A5 Coupe is exhilarating with 0 to 60 coming up in just 5.7 seconds and the quarter-mile run taking about 14.5 seconds.

In comparison to the Audi A5 Coupe, the Cadillac ATS has much more power coming from a motor of similar capacity and configuration. The Cadillac ATS goes from 0 to 60 in about 5.3 seconds while both the Mercedes-Benz C300 and the BMW 4 Series take about 5.5 seconds. The Audi A5 takes a maximum time of 5.7 seconds. The Beemer also has the highest top speed among the rivals on the list.

How well does the 2019 Audi A5 Coupe handle?

In the handling department, the Audi A5 Coupe absolutely shines with its Quattro all-wheel-drive system and sport-tuned adaptive suspension. It absolutely takes those corners almost like a sports sedan with negligible body roll. The car remains supremely stable over most of the tarmacs along with plenty of grip. The dynamic steering is the icing on the cake and provides immense feedback. The steering can be adjusted as per your preferences from the Audi Live Cockpit or the Audi MMI infotainment system. The standard Quattro system proves to be handy in challenging weather conditions along with offering superior grip levels than its FWD and RWD rivals.

2019 Audi A5 Coupe: Braking Performance

To complement the acceleration and to inspire confidence the Audi A5 Coupe gets big brakes. The Audi A5 Coupe gets 13.3-inch front ventilated discs and 13 inch ventilated rear discs. This means that the car stops at the quickest time amongst the competition. Even in panic-braking situations, the brakes inspire confidence with superior bite and great feedback along with excellent progression.

Fuel Economy
7.3/10

In the field of fuel economy, the Audi A5 Coupe gas mileage numbers are best-in-class. It delivers 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway which turns out to around 27 mpg combined. Even though the Audi A5 Coupe has exhilarating performance still it manages to return great fuel economy figures. The A5 gets a 15.3-gallon fuel tank, which means it gets a range of 351 miles in the city, 520 miles on the highway, and 413 miles combined.

The Cadillac ATS Coupe is the least fuel-efficient on the list but has comparable driving range figures to the A5 owing to the former’s sizable 16-gallon gas tank. The Audi A5 and the BMW 430i coupe offer the maximum fuel efficiency numbers among the rivals here while the Mercedes-Benz C300 coupe offers the best driving range due to its biggest gas tank measuring 17.4 gallons.

Interior
7.3/10

The Audi A5 interior gets full leather upholstery and sports a classy yet elegant appearance, as expected from Audi. The seats are supremely comfortable with good bolstering on the sides. The seats also have great under-thigh support and excellent lumbar support. The seats also get an innovative manual thigh extension. The front seats have great legroom, headroom, and shoulder room but due to the sloping roofline of the Coupe, the rear-seat headroom and shoulder room are a bit tight. The ride quality is plush and very comfortable due to the adaptive air suspension. The suspension soaks up bumps pretty well in comfort mode but can feel a bit hard in sport mode. The A5 gets dual-zone automatic climate control. The materials used are top-notch and soft-touch materials that have been used liberally. The cabin overall looks and feels premium and luxurious.

The A5 offers the best headroom and legroom in the rear seats and also offers maximum trunk capacity. The Mercedes-Benz C300 has the best headroom for the front passengers while the BMW 430i provides a slightly better rear headroom for the rear passengers, but either way, none of the cars offer truly practical and usable rear seats.

Standout features:

  • Leather seats
  • Tri-Zone automatic climate control
  • Leather-wrapped thick-rimmed steering wheel
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Keyless entry and ignition

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The Audi A5 Coupe gets a 7.0-inch infotainment system in the base trim. There is an optional 8.3-inch infotainment system that comes as standard on the higher trim levels. The infotainment system is set up in such a way, so as to give a floating look on the dashboard. The system supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You will get navigation as standard from the Premium Plus Trim and as an optional add-on in the Premium Trim. The 19 speaker Bang and Olufsen system also come as standard only on the higher trims, but the base trim gets it as an optional add-on. The Base premium trim gets a 10-speaker system as standard. The Premium Plus and Prestige trims get the Audi Virtual Cockpit which is practically a screen for the instrument cluster with customizable dials and gauges and the ability to see the navigation directly on the instrument cluster. The entire dashboard looks futuristic and exciting.

Some standout features include:

  • Audi virtual cockpit (from Premium Plus trim)
  • Audi MMI Navigation (from Premium Plus trim)
  • SiriusXM satellite radio (optional in base trim)
  • 8.3-inch infotainment screen (optional in base trim)
  • 19 speaker bang and Olufsen surround system (optional in base trim)
  • 10 speaker sound system standard in base trim

Exterior
7.3/10

The Audi A5 Coupe looks subtle but elegant on the outside as well. The straight lines, cuts, and creases impart an aggressive yet sophisticated look. The 2019 A5 gets new 18” and 20” wheel designs which look absolutely stunning. The A5 Coupe weighs around 3700 pounds and has a good road presence. The turn indicators are mounted on the Outside Rear View Mirrors (ORVMs). The A5 gets chrome finished imposing front grille with full LED Matrix Headlights along with LED DRLs. At the rear, it gets a sporty roof lip spoiler and sleek LED taillights. The optional Black Optics Package adds a lot of additional perks to the exterior which makes it look very sporty indeed. The Mercedes-Benz C300 has the longest wheelbase while the Cadillac ATS has the shortest. The BMW 430i has almost ideal dimensions for a coupe and qualifies as a perfect urban car too.

Standout features:

  • 18" 5-arm-dynamic design wheels
  • Full LED headlights
  • LED DRLs
  • Chrome front grille
  • Rear roof lip spoiler

Safety
9.4/10

Though the Audi A5 Coupe has not been given any official safety rating by the NHTSA or the IIHS, we know that the Germans are very serious about safety tech. The Audi gets all the sophisticated safety equipment starting from advanced dual-stage front side and knee airbags to driver aids like Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, blind-spot monitoring system, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Base Premium trim does miss out on a few features but adding the Convenience and Safety Package will solve that problem. Rear Side airbags can also be added for only $350. The A5 also gets a tire pressure monitoring system, ABS, and Electronic Stability Control. The Car gets a full 5 Stars in European NCAP safety rating which means that you can have complete peace of mind regarding its safety.

Standout safety features:

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Standard forward-collision warning

Competition
9.9/10

2019 Audi A5 Coupevs 2019 Cadillac ATS coupe

The Cadillac ATS is much more compact and lighter than the Audi A5 Coupe. The Cadillac also gets a more powerful engine and propels to 60 much faster than the A5. The Caddy is also much faster on the drag strip. But in terms of practicality, it gets a very small boot and the overall look and feel of the interiors are nowhere close to the Audi. So the Audi is the better choice.

2019 Audi A5 Coupevs 2019 BMW 430i

The Audi gets a much more futuristic-looking and luxurious interiors than the BMW. Both cars are more or less equal in performance, with the BMW having a slight edge over the Audi due to its lighter weight. The Beemer also gets a sweet-sounding exhaust note which will be harmony to your ears and is more ore fun to drive due to excellent driving dynamics and telepathic steering response. The Beemer is the way to go if you want sheer driving pleasure.

2019 Audi A5 Coupevs 2019 Mercedes-Benz C300

Both the cars are neck in neck in performance interior comfort and styling, but the C300 is set up much more aggressively for truly enthusiastic driving which is evident from its meager 3.5 inches of ground clearance. The C300 also gets an impractical boot capacity of only 10 cubic feet. The Audi is overall much more practical and a well-rounded product than the C300 offering the same level of performance but with much more practicality.

Final Verdict

The Audi A5 Coupe is a practical car with exciting performance, excellent handling, and commendable fuel economy. It provides the perfect balance of almost everything you could ask for and tries to give you the best experience possible in the segment. The car is a solid performer too and has multiple trims along with three engine options to choose from. If you’re out in the market looking for a comfortable yet sporty coupe that can double up as a friendly daily driver too, the A5 has got you covered.
