The Forester is the most fuel-efficient despite its slightly bigger engine than the CR-V. The CR-V, on the other side, fares quite well in the fuel economy department and is just second to the Forester. The Escape is the least efficient and has the smallest fuel tank, thus resulting in a range lesser than the competition. The CR-V and RAV4 offer the same efficiency, but RAV4 takes an upper hand by offering a better range owing to its bigger fuel tank.

Interior
8.0/10

"The raw space is laid out efficiently, and Honda fits it with the best rear seat-folding arrangement of any vehicle in the segment." Thecarconnection.com

The 2014 CR-V accommodates up to five passengers comfortably in two-row of seating. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, while the rear row is quite spacious for most adults. The LX and the EX trims get cloth upholstery, while the top EX-L trim gets leather upholstery. The cabin is well designed, but extensive use of hard plastics can be a turn-off for many people. The visibility from the driver's seat is good, and not many blind spots are encountered. Honda has cleverly designed the cubbies to store your necessary stuff without any struggle.

The 2014 CR-V has a good amount of cargo capacity, measuring 37.3 cu-ft behind the rear seats, which can be extended by folding the rear seat. The RAV4 is more practical and offers better cargo capacity. The rear legroom in the Honda CR-V is decent, but the Forester offers better rear legroom and is maximum in comparison.

The 2014 CR-V is equipped with a 5.0-inch infotainment display. In our opinion, the screen is small in size, and it can be difficult to view all the settings clearly under direct sunlight. For a good audio experience, the CR-V is equipped with a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with 4 speakers.

With the EX-L trim, the experience gets even better, owing to the presence of a 328-watt 7-speaker audio system. You also get support for SiriusXM satellite radio and navigation system with voice recognition in the EX-L trim. Some features like Bluetooth, AUX, and USB connectivity are standard across all trims.

Some of the standout infotainment features of the CR-V are:

  • 160-watt audio system with 4/6 speakers
  • i-MID with 5-inch LCD screen and customizable feature settings
  • XM Radio (EX-L)
  • 328-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with 7 speakers, including a subwoofer (EX-L)
  • Available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition (EX-L)
  • Available Honda DVD Rear Entertainment System (EX-L)

Exterior

"While the 2014 CR-V retains roughly the same dimensions as CR-Vs of yore, it looks substantially larger." - Kbb.com

The exterior dimensions of the 2014 CR-V are roughly similar to the previous generation model as well as the other compact SUVs but it's interior and cargo are comparatively spacious. After the 2012 redesign, the latest CR-V looks more sophisticated with a more aerodynamic structure.

The front fascia looks sleek with a narrow and smaller grille than usual and sharp multi-reflector halogen headlamps with auto on/off functionality. It also gets DRLs to accentuate the look. The side profile is a simple affair as a character line passed through the door handles. The wheel arches get black cladding on them which offers a rugged SUV look to the CR-V.

Some of the standout exterior features of the CR-V are:

  • One-touch power moonroof with tilt feature
  • Auto-on/off headlights

  • Rear privacy glass

Safety
8.0/10

The NHTSA has rated the 2014 CR-V with the highest 5-star overall safety score in the crash test and the IIHS has also tagged it as “Good” in frontal crash tests. The 2014 CR-V comes with an ACE body structure, and it utilizes several connected structural elements to distribute the impact of the frontal collision and ensure the safety of the occupants.

The base 2014 Honda CR-V comes with a multi-angle rearview camera while the higher trim levels get advanced safety technology. The base LX is also equipped with brake assist, ABS, and EBD as standard to help the driver while controlling the vehicle. Some of the standout safety features of the CR-V are:

  • Vehicle Stability Assist
  • TPMS
  • Brake Assist
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure

Competition
8.0/10

2014 Honda CR-V vs 2014 Ford Escape

Both the Ford Escape and the Honda CR-V go toe-to-toe in terms of justifying their pricing. While the Escape has a better list of standard features for its base price, the CR-V offers more space for rear passengers along with a more spacious cargo hold.

On the performance aspect too, the CR-V holds an edge over the Escape with more horsepower and quicker acceleration times. Overall, the CR-V comes out as a better option considering its value for money aspect.

2014 Honda CR-V vs 2014 Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester undercuts the Honda CR-V by $1,125 in terms of the base price and feels dated as opposed to the latter. However, the Forester outshines the CR-V in its practical aspect by having a standard Symmetrical AWD layout.

Also, the Forester has a higher torque output, making it a perfect adventure-loving vehicle on a budget. On the inside, the Forester is way more spacious than the CR-V but falls short when it comes to the list of standard features.

2014 Honda CR-V vs 2014 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 sits slightly at the upper range of the price tag when put against a majority of the rivals in the segment. However, both the RAV4 and the CR-V are almost similar in terms of utility and offer an excellent value for money. Both the SUVs are equally spacious for occupants and boast similar fuel economy figures too.

But the RAV4 gets a segment-leading cargo capacity with all the seats upright. On the other hand, the CR-V impresses with its performance and overall driving dynamics.

Final Verdict

The 2014 Honda CR-V is a well-rounded package and is one of the best affordable compact SUVs. As we have seen above, the CR-V offers a spacious interior, good fuel economy, high-reliability ratings, and many standard features as compared to its competitors. The used car buyers can go for the 2012 model, which marks the start of the fourth generation. Since Honda made no major changes to the 2013 and 2014 model year, you can get a similarly equipped CR-V for a lower price.
