Overview

In the decade where crossovers and SUVs pushed hatchbacks and sedans to the verge of extinction, almost every automaker discontinued various nameplates to concentrate their focus on the hottest segment in the market. But only a few brave hearts dared to keep their primeval creations alive, and Honda’s one of them. The 2014 Honda Odyssey hits the markets with a mid-cycle facelift, along with various major additions to the list of features. Priced at $28,825 for the base trim, the range-topping Touring Elite trim shall cost you about $44,450.

Buying Advice

The EX-L trim is an apt pick for any family, as it packs the minivan with all the amenities. Besides this point, the upper trims add lavish features, which if missed, won’t make a big difference to buyers looking for functionality over lavishness.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

This minivan also promises agile and nimble handling that would attract buyers that don’t want to miss out on the fun behind the wheels. There’s a reason why Odyssey is a hot-selling minivan in its segment. But the segment has various rivals like Kia Sedona, Nissan Quest, and Dodge Grand Caravan which might hinder the success of the 2014 Honda Odyssey.

Features
8.0/10

The 2014 Honda Odyssey carries over the same five trim levels, namely LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Touring Elite. The LX trim starts the Honda Odyssey’s lineup with a sticker price of $28,825 which soars to $44,450 for fully-loaded Touring Elite models.

The LX trims, despite being the base trims, boasts more standard features like a four-way power passenger seat, an 8-inch color display, and an upgraded audio system with Bluetooth streaming audio and a Pandora interface.

The EX trim steps up to an 8-passenger capacity along with a long list of features like 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless ignition and entry, heated outside mirrors, tri-zone automatic climate control, power lumbar support for the driver, Honda’s LaneWatch blind-spot camera system, a multi-adjustable second-row seat, retractable second-row sunshades, and a conversation mirror.

It also lets the buyers avail options like a voice-operated navigation system with a multi-angle rearview camera or a rear-seat entertainment system.

The Touring model appends to the list with 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, memory settings for the driver, retractable third-row sunshades, and a fold-down armrest for third-row passengers. The range-topping Touring Elite surmounts all the trims and adds automatic xenon headlights, an integrated vacuum cleaner, an upgraded rear-seat entertainment system, and a premium 12-speaker surround-sound audio system with HD radio.

We Recommend

The EX-L trim is an apt pick for any family, as it packs the minivan with all the amenities. Besides this point, the upper trims add lavish features, which if missed, won’t make a big difference to buyers looking for functionality over lavishness.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2014 Honda Odyssey, thanks to an all-new and more economical 6-speed automatic transmission, offers class-leading fuel efficiency. A 22 mpg combined will be applauded by the crowd looking for an efficient yet functional minivan. The Odyssey also features massive 21-gallon fuel tanks so that the road trips have fewer gas stops.

The Honda Odyssey earned the podium top with the best economy in the lot, while the Nissan Quest missed it by inches. Well, not inches but miles, since the Odyssey got an edge with slightly pleasing figures and a bigger fuel tank. The muscular Dodge Grand Caravan maintains a decent economy, which is better than the less powerful Kia Sedona.

Interior
9.0/10

The interiors of the 2014 Honda Odyssey are meant to seat passengers comfortably in an elegant yet functional layout. There's ample room in each of the three rows, while the different trims offer a variety of features corresponding to both opulence and serviceability of the cabin.

All the Honda Odyssey can seat up to 8-passengers with ease and comfort (except LX which can seat seven). Starting with the front seats, an eight-way power driver seat and a four-way power front passenger seat come as standard, thanks to the mid-cycle updates. The dashboard design can vary from simple with plastic surfaces to elegant with leather upholstery depending on the trim you choose.

Similarly, the LX or base trim features captain chairs, while the upper trims feature three seats wherein the middle seat can be slid up to 5.5-inches. The center seat can be slid, to make row to the third row. The third row has ample headroom and legroom to seat adults too. When it comes to cargo space, the Odyssey can handle 38.4 cu-ft of cargo behind the third row. The stow-away seats submerge into the floor to create a flat loading area measuring 93.1 cu-ft of space. Thereafter, things get difficult, as, for more space, the second-row seats have to be physically removed, which would create a massive boot space of 148.5 cu-ft, perfect for moving furniture from Ikea to your home.

The Honda Odyssey offers the most spacious cabin and also the best cargo space with all the seats upright. But you'll be managing bigger loads more frequently. The Dodge Grand Caravan comes with second-row Stow N Go seats, which results in a completely flat loading area without hassling to remove the hefty seats.

The noteworthy interior features of the 2014 Honda Odyssey include:

  • Tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel
  • 8-way power driver seat
  • 4-way power front passenger seat
  • 60/40 split-folding third-row seat
  • Manual two-zone air-conditioning
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Power lumbar support for the driver
  • Retractable second-row sunshade
  • Leather seating (front and outboard second row)
  • Heated front seats
  • Chilled storage box
  • In-vehicle vacuum cleaner

How intuitive is the 2014 Honda Odyssey Minivan's infotainment unit?

The 2014 Honda Odyssey features an 8-inch multi-information display along with Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, text-to-speech functionality, a seven-speaker sound system with a CD player, Pandora interface, auxiliary audio jack, and a USB/iPod interface. This setup remains unchanged until the buyers opt for the EX trim, which adds a 7-inch touchscreen that boasts HondaLink smartphone integration.

Opting for the EX-L trim lets the buyers choose from a voice-operated navigation system with a multi-angle rearview camera or a rear-seat entertainment system, but not both. The Touring trim adds navigation and a rear-seat entertainment system as standard. And in the end, the range-topping Touring Elite trim upgrades the rear-seat entertainment system with a wider screen and HDMI input along with a premium 12-speaker surround-sound audio system and HD radio.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 8-inch multi-information display
  • Bluetooth
  • CD player
  • Pandora interface
  • Voice-operated navigation system
  • Rear-seat entertainment system
  • Premium 12-speaker surround sound system

Exterior
7.0/10

Besides subtle cosmetic upgrades, the exterior of the 2014 Honda Odyssey remains unchanged. The front fascia carries the inspiration from the brand’s popular sedans, while the side stance showcases a lower ground clearance and clean smooth body lines.

Except near the C-pillar, where the lightning bolt side-line belt breaks the flow for the sake of better visibility. The rear showcases a clean layout with tail lights connected with chrome accents. As standard, you get 17-inch steel wheels which can be upgraded to 18-inch alloy wheels as you go up the trim level.

The 2014 Honda Odyssey boasts a surprisingly lowered stance and low ground clearance, which makes the minivan look more planted. Out of all the rivals, the Kia Sedona looks like an outdated minivan, while both Nissan and Dodge rivals are boxy. The 2014 Honda Odyssey has received a mid-cycle refresh but carries the same attire that has been admired globally.

Standout exterior features:

  • Sunroof
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear privacy glass
  • Power liftgate
  • Projector Headlamps
  • LED Taillamps
  • Powerliftgate

Safety
9.0/10

Honda has always stood to the reputation of building safe automobiles and the 2014 Honda Odyssey is no different. The Odyssey has also grabbed some fantastic safety ratings from the IIHS, where it has been awarded a top “Good” rating for its performance in safety crash tests. The mid-cycle refresh adds a plethora of safety aids both as standard and option.

Standout safety features:

  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Stability Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitor
  • Traction Control
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution
  • Lane Departure Warning Accident Avoidance System
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Honda's "LaneWatch" blind-spot camera system

Final Verdict

The 2014 Honda Odyssey adds various bells and whistles that make it more desirable in the segment. The interior has always been a place of serene and solace when it comes to Odyssey, But the same lacks the high-practicality that the Dodge Grand Caravan boasts with its second-row stow-away seats. With the facelift, even the base trim now equips more standard features that would attract more crowds.
