... and Dodge minivans as well as Chevy Traverse. Was the best price of the bunch and I sold myself on Honda reliability. We had several small issues with the car, such as the passenger seat switch draining the battery as well as the driver's side passenger door not shutting properly, but never broke down on us until recently. The battery died and would not take a jump. We currently have just over 80K miles on the car and just picked it up fromRead More

For soccer moms and large families, the minivan segment continues to hold relevance despite the advent of SUVs. In this class, the Honda Odyssey carries forward as a consistent performer. With its redesigned exterior, mechanical tweaks, and improved feature list, the 2014 iteration delivers the best bang for the buck. It is a refined option that is subtle in its ride quality and vaunts a high degree of tranquility. The cabin is spacious and though it is slightly pricier than its rivals, the Odyssey’s reliability allows it to lie streets ahead of its competitors. It has 255 complaints listed to its name and has been recalled only 4 times, which does not seem too high for a modern vehicle with advanced specifications. While a chunk of the problems lies in the newly-standardized 6-speed automatic transmission, there are some other minor niggles that complainants have also made about the vehicle on dedicated forums. The 2014 Odyssey price starts at $28,825 and in its segment, it competes with the likes of the Nissan Quest, the Dodge Grand Caravan, and the Kia Sedona.

2014 Honda Odyssey User Complaints and Problems

Safety Complaints

  • Issues with the airbag system: The 2014 Honda Odyssey has three distinct issues with its airbag system. The most common problem pertains to a warning message regarding the inflators, which might fail upon deployment. In other cases, buyers have reported the airbags either deploying randomly without a crash or not deploying at all. Every situation listed above increases the risk of an injury to the occupants and in a couple of cases, medical attention has been sought by the passengers.

Structural Complaints

  • Issues with door locking and latching: The 2014 Honda Odyssey power sliding door problem has been a recurring concern. In several cases, buyers have reported the vehicle’s power door opening randomly. While there have been no incidents recorded as of now, the unexpected opening of the doors can cause injuries to the occupants. In other cases, users have also reported the vehicle locking and unlocking without any input from the driver.
  • Peeling of the paint: The 2014 Honda Odyssey problems list includes issues with its paint. Buyers have reported the paint of the vehicle peeling from the top around its sunroof and also its hood. While the issue is most commonly noted in Pearl White Paint, there is currently no solution provided by Honda.
  • Explosion of sunroof: In a handful of cases, buyers of the 2014 Odyssey have reported the vehicle’s sunroof exploding without impact or incidence. Complainants have recorded the glass pane shattering and the pieces flying outward, which can result in injuries to the passengers.

Interior Complaints

  • Malfunctioning seatbelt: In four cases, buyers of the 2014 Odyssey have reported the passengers getting entangled in the seatbelts. Complainants have recorded a similar issue in all the rows of the vehicle and it has caused skin abrasions to the occupants. Currently, there is no solution that is available for the problem
  • Lose second-row seat: The 2014 Honda Odyssey issues also include problems with the minivan’s seats. In a considerable number of cases, complainants have recorded the second-row seat unlatching from the vehicle’s floorboard. As a result, this separation exposes the passengers to the risk of the seats folding independently, when the vehicle is in motion, and also increases the risk of an injury in case of a crash. Currently, there is one recall dealing with the issue, which is referenced by NHTSA ID 17V725000.

Mechanical Complaints

  • Failure of spark plugs: In several cases, buyers of the 2014 Honda Odyssey have reported the vehicle shuddering excessively and failing to accelerate. This is followed by the failure of the lane-departure warning and front collision avoidance functionalities. An error message is displayed on the information cluster, and where a diagnosis has been conducted, the failure of spark plugs has been regarded as the issue.
  • Shuddering transmission unit: The 2014 Honda Odyssey transmission problems are concerned with its six-speed automatic unit. Complainants have reported the transmission shifting improperly between gears and even slipping, which causes the vehicle to vibrate excessively and deliver rough performance. In most cases, the solution is to flush the transmission fluid. However, where the situation is beyond repair, buyers have had to replace the entire transmission unit.
  • Problem with service brakes: The 2014 Honda Odyssey brake system problem makes up for a chunk of its complaints. In most instances, buyers have reported that at speeds of over 50 MPH, the steering vibrates and the vehicle hesitates when the brake pedal is depressed. It takes a longer time to come to a halt and where a diagnosis has been made, the front rotors were attributed as the cause of concern. Though the primary solution is their resurfacing, the problem recurs constantly, and in almost all cases, complainants have had to replace the rotors. Despite being a widespread issue, the Japanese brand has not introduced any recall for it.

Walk-in seatbacks may be unlatched

Due to an error in the manufacturing process, if the walk-in seatbacks release lever is used to fold a fully reclined left outboard seatback forward, the seatback may stay in an unlocked position or unlock unexpectedly.

Dealers will confirm the proper operation of the second-row outboard seatback, and install a support bracket to the seat recliner. If the seatback cannot lock, dealers will replace the seatback frame.

Should you buy the 2014 Honda Odyssey?

The 2014 Honda Odyssey is the best option in the minivan segment available today. It delivers a comprehensive performance in all aspects and justifies the price tag it carries. Even in terms of safety, the Japanese minivan manages to ace the segment it falls in. Its reliability is top-notch and for a vehicle that sells over 120,000 units, the user-grievances seem restricted. Even the recalls list seems justifiable and like always, the Honda Odyssey has been a consistent proposition with a rather hassle-free ownership experience. So, yes, for us the latest iteration of the vehicle is purchase worthy and we do not find any reason to veto it.
