Overview

The 2014 Kia Sportage bashes carefree on the track with its tweaked base 182 hp 2.4L I-4 engine, an increase of 6 hp from last year, along with the same 260 horsepower 2.0L Turbo I-4 powertrain On the SX, for a starting MSRP of $22,500. Having been introduced in both FWD and AWD layouts, its production belt of LX, EX, and SX trim levels, which are pretty frugal, loaded with ample features, and practical in their outplay with an interior cargo capacity of up to 54.6 cu-ft and towing prowess of 2,000 lbs throughout. Up for sale with specs such as the enhanced suspension tuning besides those newer front grille and fog lights are another level up for this 5-seater SUV despite the slaughter of its 6-speed manual transmission this season.

2014 Kia Sportage Buying Advice

The 2014 Kia Sportage belongs to the generation that spans from 2011 to 2016. The 2014 Sportage has received some refresh all across its range but they tend to make a huge difference over the 2013 MY and its predecessors. Moreover, with a price increment of just $500, the 2014 Sportage seems to be a reasonable bargain compared to the previous model. For the best value, go with the EX trim. It adds several more features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera with rear parking sensors, a cooling glove box, and 18-inch alloy wheels. You also get the UVO infotainment system paired with an Infinity six-speaker audio system and HD Radio. Seating enhancements include a power-adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats.

The Kia Sportage 2014 continues its rivalry with a top speed of 132 MPH against the thrusts of the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and VW Tiguan. And so does its mileage economy of up to 28 MPG with which 428 miles of range at max is just right there at your pedal without breaking a sweat. Blessed with a spacious cabin with enough room just like last year, the Sportage seems all set to go toe to toe against the trendsetters.

2014 Kia Sportage for sale

The 2014 Kia Sportage can be availed of for your daily commute with standard financing of as high as $201/month for 72 months that is subjected to increase to $372/month considering the payment months reduce to 36. If you want to buy a used 2014 Kia Sportage, the average price range from $14,000 to $20,000, depending on the trim, features, condition, location, and mileage.

Buying Advice

The EX trim is the best fit for all for its price tag as it brings in the right comfort creature with automatic air conditioning and heated front seats over the base LX. And it stays as relevant in its balance between performance and fuel economy with its 184 hp engine when compared to the more expensive SX edition. Therefore, one should prefer EX over others.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2014 Kia Sportage remains one of the most reliable SUVs in the space with a J.D power rating of 80 while enriching you with a thrill of 7.9 seconds 0-60 MPH sprint with its 260 horsepower turbocharged SX. Though its price range varies from $22,500 to $29,300, its command over the dynamics goes untarnished and unchanged across all siblings, thanks to its high-end newly upgraded suspensions.

Speaking of the finances, the Kia Sportage 2014 is prone to having a maintenance expense of $5,041 and repairing of $2,036 for the entry-level LX. However, these figures shoot up at $5,315 and $2,480 respectively as we incline towards the lineup-topping SX trim with the AWD platform. As far as the depreciation of its resale value is concerned, one can expect it to fall between the $12,989-$13,994 curve throughout. Shoppers will take comfort in the high-reliability ratings and safety ratings of the Kia Sportage. It is backed by Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile new-car powertrain warranty, plus a one-year/12,000-mile Platinum warranty for non-powertrain parts.

Features
9.0/10

The 2014 Kia Sportage is available in 3-trim levels with the base LX with the front-wheel-drive starting at $22,500. Even the bare-bones Sportage LX gets Cloth Upholstery as its standard touch along with 6-speaker Audio System. While for $25,900, the EX trim goes on to add heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control as extra.

The SX trim is the last one in the queue with assets like exclusive 18-inch SX design wheels and a 7-speaker Infinity Audio System for an investment of $27,800. The auto-leveling headlamps and Clean Tex Cloth Seat Trim further extend its inherent offerings.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

"Both engines use gasoline direct-injection technology that helps maximize power and fuel economy." - Kelley Blue Book

The 2014 Kia Sportage returns EPA estimated 21 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highways, and 24 MPG combined when its 182 hp 2.4L I-4 engine and FWD are employed. This helps it to have a combined range of 367 miles while the maximum figure could be 428 miles on the highway. However, the 2.0L Turbo I-4 powertrain is 1 MPG less efficient overall in that same FWD platform while the AWD configuration goes down by 2 MPG when compared to the FWD.

Coming on the rivals, the 2014 Sportage has a 5 MPG lower combined fuel economy than the CX-5 which makes the former breathe out 62 miles earlier on average. Even the CR-V has got 31 miles extra combined range when compared to the Sportage owing to its 2 MPG better mileage altogether. In the end, cometh VW Tiguan with its 14 miles lower range coverage than the Kia counterpart as it is a 3 MPG less efficient gas guzzler.

Interior
7.0/10

"Functionally, there is much to like inside the 2014 Kia Sportage SUV." - Kelley Blue Book

The interior of the 2014 Kia Sportage feels a little underwhelming inside the LX trim as the configuration has been home to only manually adjustable cloth seats and manual air conditioning. However, things get slightly attractive as we get in the EX trim as the heated front seats along with that upgraded cloth upholstery and dual-zone automatic climate control enhance your comfort and touch by a margin.

Not just that, the Kia Sportage 2014 even houses a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat on the front as well for the EX and SX editions. But the Clean Tex Cloth Seat Trim remains special to the SX variant only across the lineup. Considering the ability to go with maximum volume, the Kia Sportage can accommodate cargo from 26.1 cu-ft to 54.6 cu-ft which retains to be as it is for all formats.

As per data, the 2014 Sportage offers a 2.3 cu-ft larger cargo volume than the VW Tiguan in normal arrangement but has an 11.1 cu-ft smaller cargo capacity than the CR-V. The Mazda CX-5 has been organized to have 8 cu-ft bigger cargo engulf than the Sportage as well. Apart from these, we have a UVO infotainment system for the EX and SX editions.

The Kia Sportage has been equipped with a 6-speaker Audio System for the LX for musical rhymes that is switched to an even better 7-speaker Infinity Audio System inside the Sportage SX and Sportage EX. In addition to that, the satellite radio is also there for all but Voice Activation and Speed Compensated Volume Control have been devoid inside the LX.

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2014 Kia Sportage retains the same silhouette from top to bottom in those similar 8 exterior colors. But it welcomes a recently updated front grille that is encompassed by the newer fog light and optional Xenon headlights. And on top comes the roof rack rails for the EX and SX configurations.

The Kia Sportage 2014 sails in style on 17-inch and 18-inch wheels. Though the LX, EX, and SX are major mimics of each other but they tend to deviate in their class of functioning as the auto-leveling headlamps have been integrated only for the SX unline the projector-beam halogen headlamps of the LX and EX.

Going by the figures, the CX-5 has 1.7 inches higher ground clearance than the Sportage which will simply give it freedom while maneuvering off-roads. Also, the Tiguan is 117 lbs heavier than the 2014 Sportage because of which it is certain to struggle a little bit more on the gradient drive than the latter.

Some of the standout exterior features are as follows:

  • Lip spoiler
  • Projector-beam halogen headlamps
  • LED taillights
  • Fog lights
  • 17-inch alloy wheels

Safety
7.0/10

The 2014 Kia Sportage has been marked with a 4-star NHTSA safety rating and "Good" in almost all IIHS parameters except the front small overlap(driver-side). Reinforcing its status of well-built chassis through its safety scores, the standard assets of the Sportage's safety suite are other add-ons that multiply its safety stance. Some of them have been mentioned below:

  • Electronic stability control
  • ABS
  • Driveline traction control
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Back-up camera
  • Brake assist

Competition
7.0/10

2014 Kia Sportage vs. 2014 Honda CR-V

The 2014 Kia Sportage has been engineered to have better towing capacity and power curve than the Honda CR-V. However, it lags behind the CR-V when it is a matter of cabin spaciousness, build quality, and range practicality. Hence, one can go for the HR-V considering its better value proposition on a bigger picture.

2014 Kia Sportage vs. 2014 Mazda CX-5

The 2014 Kia Sportage and the 2014 Mazda CX-5 have similar towing prowess but one will be more thrilled while throttling the Sportage because of its higher power surge and dynamics. But once done way with those, the CX-5 will get you more roominess inside the cabin for a longer range. All in all, both have their respective edges against each other, making both of them equally desirable.

2014 Kia Sportage vs. 2014 VW Tiguan

The 2014 Kia Sportage might be a little shy in its towing capability and power performance against the VW Tiguan. But it compensates for those losses with its superior range coverage, comfortable rear row, and parallel safety stature. Therefore, one can have either of them for this model year.

Final Verdict

The 2014 Kia Sportage is one of the bestsellers in the space with its enormous jolt, decent dynamics, and impressive practicality. Being an SUV capable to do all the daily on-road while letting your hands on the off-road as well, its overall frame doesn't give up under any circumstance. Though it is still believed that its standard feature list for the LX trim could have been improved but apart from that one won't be disappointed with it.
