... Korean messages; the incorrect navigation (evidently normal per KIA). KIA needs some serious work on their customer service! It would be a decent vehicle if KIA could get rid of the useless technology that does not function correctly and provide a decent service center. I surrendered and cut my losses; got rid of this vehicle at 5600 miles! Never another KIA!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy I no longerRead More

My opinion about this car has changed since my previous review. Over 20 000 miles, this car began to present a problem with the transmission, which is very disengaging, in such a new car. The problem was that sometimes I stopped the car in a stop sign or a light, and when I tried to move it again, I accelerated,Read More

... wheel doesn't come down enough so if you want to put your arms on the armrest you have to rotate which arm is driving. I got the same gas mileage in the Mustang that I get in this POS, It has no power to go, even turning the damn ECO off its like waiting for the hamster in the wheel to catch up...... I fill up at least twice a week, even if I take it easy and drive like a grandpa it just sucks. Unfortunately I amRead More

At present, all odds seem to be going against the Kia Sportage. With the new generation of Sportage SUVs stationed at dealers with a ludicrous number of engine failures, its appeal has drastically fallen in a couple of years. Even though we see that the actual number of complaints has fallen to just 55 from almost 300 last year, the worrisome factor is those engine problems still comprise almost 75% of the officially listed complaints on the NHTSA directly or indirectly.

With a reliability rating of 81/100 which is on par with the segment standards, would you be willing to choose the Sportage against the like of trusted competitors like the Honda CR-V, the Volkswagen Tiguan, and the Toyota RAV4? The Youtube channel "MasterCarsPro" shows the list of issues and problems that one might face during the ownership of the 2014 Sportage. Check out this video below and read ahead to know if it's worth your investment.

2014 Kia Sportage User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Complaints

  • Engine- Engine complaints have been plaguing the 2014 Kia Sportage owners. Random engine stalls, sudden deceleration, knocking, seizure, and internal mechanical failure were all common complaints reported on the engine. Go through any of these faults and an engine replacement was imminent. The worst part reworks and replaced engines have a high risk of fire due to a faulty high-pressure fuel outlet connection/ alignment. This issue was even subject to a recall (ID-18V907000) later down the line.
  • Service brakes- Not a widespread issue but owners have complained about the delay in braking or gradual loss of braking force with the mileage. The brakes also occasionally let go even if you have the foot pressed on the pedal. Also, constant rubbing of the pads on the discs due to faults with the ABS module calibration causes premature brake wear.

Electric System complaints

  • Air conditioning- Vehicle-equipped automatic climate control system blows warm air occasionally when set to auto mode. Loss of cooling during engine idling is also a pretty common issue on the 2014 Kia Sportage. Though most issues were caused by faulty cabin temperature sensor readings, clogged valves, leaking fluid and faulty compressors have also been failure points.

Structural Complaints

  • Sunroof- Cracking/ exploding sunroof has been a common occurrence on trims equipped with a glass panoramic roof. Owners who have had this issue raise concern about not getting a replacement under warranty as the dealers suspect physical damage to the glass which might have led to this failure.

Safety Complaints

  • TPMS- The tire pressure monitoring system on the 2014 Kia Sportage has been a constant subject to faults. Vehicles with mileages as low as 6,000-miles have been stationed with the same fault. The issue was traced to be a faulty signal from the wheel sensors. Even though the owners got them changed, the issue is still said to occur for many forcing owners to manually check for air pressure.

2nd February 2022

22V051000

Engine compartment fire

The Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) module could malfunction and cause an electrical short, which could result in an engine compartment fire while parked or while driving, increasing the risk of injury.

The dealers will install a new fuse for the HECU circuit board, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters, informing owners of the safety risk, were mailed on March 31, 2022. A second notice will be mailed once remedy parts become available.

2

19th December 2018

18V907000

High-pressure fuel pipe may leak.

The high-pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged, misaligned, or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak, which in presence of a hot surface can increase the risk of a fire.

The dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pipe, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2019.

3

27th January 2014

14V023000

Incorrect certification label.

The certification label has incorrect tire pressure information printed on it, listing a specification that is 1 or 2 psi below the correct information, which could result in premature tire wear and increase the risk of a crash.

The dealers will correct the label information, and owners will also receive a sticker to put into the owner’s manual, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in February 2014.

Should you buy a used 2014 Kia Sportage?

Don’t get us wrong here, but the Kia Sportage is one SUV in its segment that packs in the most for what you pay for. That alone would be one reason for many people to consider it as their next car, but with the kind of controversy it has been stirring up in recent years, its general appeal has hit hard on. With engine complaints piling one upon another and even the automaker advising limited use of this vehicle, to prevent property damage or personal injury due to fire, it might not be the perfect time of year to get or own a Sportage. It definitely won’t get our vote, especially when you have a trusty alternative like the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 hanging around for not that big of a premium over this Kia.
