Overview

The Genesis G70 is a remarkable luxury compact sedan. The car has an aggressive road presence with a low front grille, flanked by curved lines. It has sharp body lines considerably improving aerodynamics. The dual LED headlights add to the overall look of the car.

Though the design has not changed compared to the previous year's model, we feel it continues to grab people’s attention. The G70 starts at MSRP $39,150 for the standard 2L, rear-wheel drive option and goes all the way up to $ 55,350 for the 3.3L AWD with Sports Prestige package. No significant changes are expected for the 2023 model

Buying Advice

We would definitely recommend going for the fully loaded G70, which is the 3.3L turbocharged V6 engine with the AWD drivetrain. Top it up with the Sports Prestige package and what you have is a luxury performance car, but be sure to take a beating in the fuel efficiency front.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The car is offered in two engines, namely the 2 liter and 3.3 lire, with all-wheel drive and front-wheel drivetrain options. The interior of the Genesis G70 is fabulous and is loaded with features and the company spares no room for any complaints. Overall the car is positioning itself as a high-performance luxury sedan competing against the likes of the BMW 3 Series, the Audi A4, and the Lexus IS 300.

Features
7.5/10

The Genesis G70 is available in a total of 4 trims with two engine configurations and a similar number of drivetrain options. The smaller engine with a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine and a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 engine. Both the engines have the option of either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive options. The base trim with a 2L engine and RWD option starts at an MSRP of $39,150 and goes all the way up to $46,750 for the 3.3 V6 AWD trim.

This can further be enhanced by opting for the additional package. The package available for the smaller engine configuration is the “Sports Prestige” and is priced at $ 4,200. The bigger engine gets an option of two packages “Sports Advance” at $ 4,300 and “Sports Prestige” at $ 8,700. We can either opt out by choosing the standard on both configurations. A fully loaded G70 will set you back by $ 55,350.

Genesis offers a lot of safety features on the standard package at no additional cost, which is a significant point to consider as most of the brands offer these features as additional. The standard package only misses out on forward and reverse parking distance warning and rain-sensing wipers. The Sports Prestige package on the 3.3T has a lot of desirable features like the Nappa leather seats and Brembo brakes amongst others, which can allure any car enthusiast. The car is available in 12 exterior colors and 2 or 3 interior themes based on the choice of your exterior colors.

We Recommend

We would definitely recommend going for the fully loaded G70, which is the 3.3L turbocharged V6 engine with the AWD drivetrain. Top it up with the Sports Prestige package and what you have is a luxury performance car, but be sure to take a beating in the fuel efficiency front.

Release Date

While writing this review, the 2023 Genesis G70 is available on their website but the stocks are limited, and getting your hands on one would be difficult at the moment. The company has already switched to producing the 2023 iterations, so we can expect the deliveries to start soon.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The fuel economy front is where the Genesis G70 takes a hit. The smaller 2-liter engine with the RWD variant offers MPG in the city of 21 miles and 31 on the highway. This further drops with the 3.0 liter AWD variant to an MPG of 18 miles in the city and 27 miles on the highway. The competition in this respect overshadows the fuel efficiency of the G70. The G70 is capable of achieving an overall combined range of 398 miles.

We would say that the Genesis G70 is not the better performer in terms of fuel economy and lags behind the competition. BMW 330i performs well in its segment registering an MPG of 26/36/30 on city, highways, and combined making it better by a few miles than the Audi A4, which comes as a close second. The Lexus IS 300 is the least competitive compact sedan in terms of fuel economy offering less MPG than the G70.

Interior
7.5/10

The G70 is loaded with interior features and at the price at which it is available, it feels slightly better than the competitors as these features are mostly available as standard for the G70. The rear seats on the G70 are a bit cramped compared to the competition. The quality of material used on the G70 also is highly appreciable.

The Sports Prestige package comes equipped with Nappa leather seats and aluminum sports-themed trim. The standard variant also uses good quality materials and overall we are very happy with the fit and finish of the interior. The cargo space, however, is a bit disappointing with a meager 10.5 cubic feet.

The BMW 330I offers the best space in terms of the front and rear seats followed by the Audi A4. The IS 300 and G70 have almost comparable interior dimensions. G70 offers slightly better front seat and rear seat space and falls behind the Lexus slightly in terms of trunk space at 10.8 cubic feet which is the least in the segment. The BMW 330I offers the most spacious trunk at 13 cubic feet.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Genesis G70 standard package include:

  • 8inch digital + analog display
  • Heated front seats
  • 4-way power driver seat
  • Leatherette seating surfaces.
  • Leatherette wrapped lower instrument panel
  • 10.25-inch Navigation system.

How intuitive is the 2023 Genesis G70’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system on the G70 is at par with its competitors. It has been developed keeping in mind the drivers to create a customized experience. It offers most of the standard offerings currently available with other brands. It also packs a built-in cam which when enabled allows a user to check the vehicles surrounding remotely. The company also offers a digital key app that permits the user to control some basic functionality like starting the car, pre heating the seats, etc

Some of the most notable infotainment features available are

  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Voice commands
  • Wireless charging
  • Lexicon Audio System
  • Valetmode
  • OTA updates

Exterior
7.5/10

We feel the exterior design of the Genesis G70 is the best in its segment, the dual headlight, the crest grille inspired by the Genesis logo provide an unmatched elegance to the car’s design. The quad lambs on the rear provide a distinct appearance to the G70. The car design accolades its athletic characters. The G70 weighs in as the heaviest with 3,915 lbs and has a total length of 184.4 inches making it the shortest in terms of length. The Genesis has a wider body at 72.8 inches. In terms of height also, it is the shortest in the segment.

Each of the cars in this segment has an individualistic design but the models have aged and the G70 stands out among its competitors in terms of exterior looks. The G70 is the heaviest in this segment with a curb weight of 3,915 lbs followed by the Lexus IS 300, the Audi A4, and the BMW 330I. The Audi A4 is the longest at 187.5 inches and has the lowest ground clearance in the segment.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • Crest Grille
  • Quad Led Headlights
  • Quad rear Led Lights
  • Rear Diffuser
  • Dual rear exhaust
  • 19inch Alloy wheels

Safety

The NHTSA has not rated the 2023 Genesis G70, but we believe it to perform well in crash test ratings. It offers a lot of safety features as standard, which we are impressed with as the other models in this segment offer it as an additional package. The competition mostly comes equipped with 8 airbags whereas the G70 is equipped with 10 making it better in the safety department as compared to the competition.

Other standout safety features for the standard package include:

  • Forward collision avoidance assist
  • Lane following assist
  • Blind spot collision avoidance assist
  • Highway driving assist
  • Smart cruise control
  • Driver attention warning
  • High beam assist
  • Rear cross-traffic collision alert
  • Rear occuapant alert
  • Safe exit warning
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Rearview camera guidelines
  • TPMS

Competition

2023 Genesis G70 vs 2022 BMW 330i

The G70 challenges the reign of the BMW 330I. It has proven to be a tough competitor against the BMW in all aspects The BMW 330i scores well in the performance and interior space category. The G70 offers slightly less performance and comfort as compared to the BMW 330i. In terms of the value for money proposition, we strongly believe that Genesis G70 would be the winner among the two.

2023 Genesis G70 vs 2022 Audi A4

The Genesis G70 is way ahead of the Audi A4 in terms of performance, price, interior features, etc. Hence we would recommend the G70 over the Audi A4. The Audi A4 design has remained the same for a long time now and we feel it is outdated. With very little information available about the 2023 A4 model, we would suggest the G70 over it.

2023 Genesis G70 vs 2022 Lexus IS 300

The Lexus IS 300 and G70 fall into a similar situation when it comes to fuel economy. In terms of performance, the Koreans have surpassed the Japs. The G70 performs exceptionally better than the Lexus. With Lexus being offered at a much higher price than the G70, the Genesis sedan proves to be the better value for money proposition. Hence, we would suggest the G70 over the Lexus IS 300.

Final Verdict

The Genesis G70 has left a mark and is challenging the German-dominated luxury performance segment since its launch. The car looks exceptionally well with its athletic and aggressive design. The company has focused its resources on building a value-for-money car in this segment. The G70 is an apt example of the company’s commitments. The G70 offers very good performance and a standard set of features that rivals the BMW, Audi, and Lexus. It also offers comparatively better warranty covers and the after-sales experience also is something that requires appreciation. The G70 challenges the BMW 330I's reign on the segment and to some extent, it has traded blows with the BMW but has failed to defeat the reigns of the BMW. However, We would highly recommend the Genesis G70 to our car's enthusiastic readers and the only aspect that we feel it is lacking is the fuel efficiency front, which we believe shouldn’t be a decisive factor while looking to purchase in this segment.
