Overview

The 2020 Genesis G70 comes with a couple of minor changes while the overall design remains similar to last year. It is marketed as a driver-oriented sports car, which has a competent chassis with a perfect balance between ride comfort and handling, that is high on interior luxury. Being a performance-oriented sedan it gets two engine choices a turbo-four and a twin-turbo V6. Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox while there is an option of a 6-speed stick shifter with the G70 Sport variant. But then you can only get it in the RWD configuration while the rest of them gets a choice between RWD and AWD. Moreover, the V6 powered 3.3T trim is able to sprint from 0-60 MPH in just about 4.5 seconds.

2020 Genesis G70 Buying Advice

The 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T trim for sale is by far the best trim you could go for a bargained price of $35,450. Apart from value-oriented features on offer, the G70 also comes with a much more potent V6 engine that should suffice your performance needs. Further, you can also opt for the optional Prestige variant, which gets Nappa leather upholstery, heated rear seats, and more. The 2020 G70 remains practically unchanged this year, and it hardly makes any sense to pay the $550 price hike. Instead, you can always opt for the 2019 G70, which marked the start of the sedan we know, with a sumptuous interior setup and the powertrains to back it up too.

The best selling point about the G70 is its price, starting at as low as $35,450, as it undercuts most of the luxury brands and more importantly its direct rival the BMW 3-Series. As far as changes go, the previous trim levels have been replaced by Elite, Prestige, and Sport. Prestige trims and above get a power-operated trunk. Moreover, Genesis introduces two new shades namely the Black Forest Green and the Savile Silver. For sale, the Genesis G70 is available in over 3 trims, as it goes up against rivals like the Kia Stinger, Lexus IS 300, and the above mentioned BMW 3-Series.

2020 Genesis G70 for sale

The 2020 Genesis G70 is priced at a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $35,450 for the base 2.0T variant. The 2.0T Sport variant, with plenty of sporty features onboard, has a price tag of $38,500, while the top-tier 3.3T variant with the V6 engine, will set you back by an MSRP of $46,650. Offered standard in RWD guise, the 2020 G70 AWD will cost you around $2000 more on top of the base price for all trim levels. Now based on various other factors, the average prices for a Used 2020 G70 range from $25,500 to $32,500. Further genesis also offers attractive deals with the 2020 G70 which includes finance offers starting at a monthly payment of $320 excluding a $2000 down payment.

Buying Advice

If your finances permit then we won't recommend anything but the 3.3T trim otherwise if you are on a tight budget then our suggestion would be to stick to the 2.0T trim. While those looking for a few more niceties on a budget would find the 2.0T Elite package the most value-for-money for what it offers.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Genesis G70 belongs to a crowded segment wherein almost every manufacturer has thrown a contender into the game. The closest rival posing threat to the G70's sales is its own sister- Kia Stinger. It also intends to take on the offerings from the German duo BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the British marque Jaguar, and the Japanese luxury brand Lexus which are the most established marquees in this segment.

Since the going is tough the 2020 G70 starts with an aggressive price tag and offers a meaty twin-turbo V6 in the top G70 trim. The ride and handling of the G70 are among the best but the cabin space and trunk aren't the best in the segment. But being a driver-focused car this should be your least concern. That said, with a high-reliability rating and the 'Top Safety Pick+' award from IIHS the 2020 Genesis G70 aims to make a mark in this highly touted luxury compact car segment.

Buying Advice

If your finances permit then we won't recommend anything but the 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T trim. Although, if you are on a tight budget then our suggestion would be to stick to the 2.0T trim. While those looking for a few more niceties on a budget would find the 2.0T Elite package the most value-for-money variant for what it offers.

Features
8.0/10

The 2020 Genesis G70 is majorly differentiated based on the powertrain option you go for. The base one is a 2.0-liter turbo-four unit that makes the 2.0T trim while the other one is a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 unit that makes the G70 3.3T trim. Once you have decided this then you can kit up that particular trim from the available four package options namely Standard, Elite, Prestige, and Sport. That being said, the base 2.0T trim starts at $35,450 while the base 3.3T trim starts at $44,650.

Coming to the packages, the 2.0T Elite adds front and rear parking sensors, full LED exterior lights, a Lexicon sound system, etc. The 2.0T Prestige package adds bigger alloys, head-up display, wireless charging pad, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, surround-view monitor, Nappa leather-trimmed seats, heated rear seats, etc. The 2.0T Sport package adds performance brakes, limited-slip differential, sports pedals, Nappa leather-trimmed seats, etc.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The 2020 Genesis G70 powered by the turbo-four engine returns nominal gas mileage of 22 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined. Going for the AWD version with the same engine sees a drop of 2 MPG in the city gas mileage and 3 MPG on the highway. The G70 powered by the twin-turbo V6 returns 17 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway while in the AWD version there is just one MPG drop in the highway gas mileage.

As expected, the G70 does not fare so well in fuel economy as it does in the other departments. In fact, it is just above the least fuel-efficient car here returning 25 miles to the gallon combined, which is just 1 MPG more than what the Lexus IS 300 returns. The BMW 330i sits at the top of the lot here with an impressive fuel efficiency of 30 miles to the gallon combined.

Interior
6.0/10

Inside, the G70 delivers a luxury experience, thanks to attractive materials and excellent build quality. – Car and Driver

The interiors of the 2020 G70 have been very tastefully designed. It really exudes luxury similar to what you see in luxury German and British brands. The layout is much like we have seen in other Hyundai or Kia cars and it looks neat and ergonomically done. What’s impressive is the build quality and the materials used. Almost all the places you touch are soft-touch materials with little to no evidence of cost-cutting. There is leather on the dashboard with contrast stitching, knurled switches, and aluminum trims, all of which really up the ambiance in the cabin.

The dashboard has flowing lines and an 8-inch floating infotainment screen sits on top of the dashboard. The climate controls have a unique design and the diamond stitching on the seats and door panels is well executed and lend the G70 a more premium feel. The infotainment system in the G70 is sure to remind you of the one found in the lesser Hyundai vehicles. The floating 8-inch touch screen unit is pretty easy to use and is also fairly intuitive. It comes with navigation as standard and also provides smartphone integration through Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The graphics are also pretty good but the uninspiring and plebian layout is a big no-no.

With a cargo capacity of just 10.5 cubic feet, the 2020 G70 is left at the last of this comparison since all other rivals except the Lexus IS 300 overshadow the Genesis here. The 60/40 split-folding seats ease out this issue up to quite an extent. Furthermore, the one-touch boot opener is a blessing as it makes for easy loading/unloading luggage in the trunk.

The seats in the G70 are very comfortable. They hold you really well providing good under-thigh and lumbar support. The diamond leather stitching looks beautiful and the seats can be had with heating and ventilation functions for the front and only heating for the rear. At the rear, space is at a premium and taller passengers may find it cramped. Although the rear seats are equally comfortable. Compared to the rivals, you will see that its sibling Stinger offers better rear space and a larger boot with only the Lexus IS 300 behind the G70 in terms of rear cabin space.

Interior Features on offer are:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

  • 60/40 split-folding rear seats

Exterior
7.0/10

The G70 is arguably the most attractive product Genesis currently sells. Its look is bold and athletic, even if some styling elements appear cribbed from competitors (for instance, the window-line is similar to the Acura TLX). – Motor1

The 2020 Genesis G70 is a beautiful car to look at. It sports a fresh design although you can see a lot of areas taking inspiration from other cars like the rear tail lamps look like that of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the front bumper looks like the one on the Kia Stinger and at the sides, the lines remind you of the Alfa Romeo Guilia. At the front, the bumper has sharp cuts and creases to make a rather complex bumper that houses the LED fog lamps. The headlamps are LED units too and a large hexagonal grille dominates the front fascia.

At the sides, two-character lines run down the length of the car and there is also a fake front fender vent to give it that Alfa Romeo Guilia look. At the rear, it’s tidy with the C-Class-like LED tail lamps, a mild diffuser, bulging boot lid, and dual chrome exhaust tips. The entire car features beautiful bulges with well-placed cuts and creases to carve out a very beautiful-looking car. Thus it is without any doubt the most contemporary-looking sedan in the segment.

The G70 does not share its dimensions with the Kia Stinger, surprisingly. The Kia Stinger is the longest and the widest sedan here. Kia is also the heaviest. The BMW 330i is the tallest sedan and the G70 and the Stinger share the same height. As for the wheelbase, the longest Stinger naturally sits on the longest wheelbase while the Lexus IS 300 is the one with the smallest wheelbase.

Exterior Features on offer are:

  • Crosshatch Hexagonal Grille
  • 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels

Safety
8.0/10

The 2020 Genesis G70 is an all-new car and thus NHTSA hasn't crash-tested it yet. Although IIHS has crash-tested it and we are happy to report that the 2020 G70 scored the top rating of 'Good' in all six parameters of IIHS and bagged the top honors of 'Top Safety Pick+'. This is evidence enough to pass the G70 as a safe sedan and Genesis being a luxury carmaker hasn't bowed out on delivering some of the latest advanced safety features.

Safety features on offer are-

  • High beam assist
  • Forward collision mitigation w/ pedestrian detection
  • Hillstart assist w/ brake assist
  • LAne-keep assist
  • Driver attention warning
  • Blind-spot monitoring w/ rear-cross traffic alert
  • Available surround-view monitor

Competition
7.0/10

2020 Genesis G70 vs 2020 BMW 3-Series

The 2020 BMW 3-Series is offered at a premium compared to the Genesis G70. For the premium, you get better performance and class-leading gas mileage. Also, the practicality quotient and space inside the cabin are better on the 3-Series compared to the G70.

Just like the G70 the 3-Series also comes with a range of engine choices and offers a potent luxury sedan with an inclination towards luxury. The only thing that works in favor of the G70 is its lower ownership cost and high-reliability rating compared to the 3-Series.

2020 Genesis G70 vs 2020 Kia Stinger

The G70 and the Kia Stinger are sister cars and are based on the same platform. If the G70 intends to do anything, it intends to perform better than the Kia, and that it does. While most numbers are exactly the same between both the cars, the Genesis has some tweaks to differentiate itself from the Kia. For starters, the suspension is considerably stiffer on the Genesis to make it a better handling car. The wheelbase is much smaller to give it a nimble character. The interiors of the G70 are far more luxurious than the Kia and while both cars look amazing, the Genesis still manages to stay slightly ahead.

While the Stinger is quite sporty, the Genesis is even sportier. The Kia, however, has a lesser base price and packs in more practicality and space than the former. Having said that, the choice narrows down to your personal preference. We think paying a little more for a sportier and more luxurious car is worth it.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Genesis G70 is an extremely well-rounded car that checks all the right boxes. It’s gorgeous to look at, has well-appointed interiors, and performs quite well. It’s adequately sporty and is still very comfortable and fulfills that luxury quotient quite well. It’s quite praiseworthy that a new brand like Genesis comes out with such a car in just three years and further takes on such a competitive segment so well. What’s best about this car is the price at which it is being offered which makes it a great value for money.
