With Ford focusing more and more on pickup trucks and SUVs, 2020 may just be the last year for the Ford Fusion. However, since the latest generation launched in 2013, the Fusion has become a solid option all around with a stunning design and comfortable interiors. The Fusion also offers a lot of modern technologies despite its age, matching most of its rivals on several fronts. Ford also offers a healthy range of engine options, although performance is not impressive and the lack of fuel efficiency leaves it trailing behind competitors. Unfortunately, the V-6 is discontinued for 2020, cutting down on one of its notable advantages.

On the reliability front, the Ford Fusion has generally scored high. Ford has solved almost all the major niggles and issues over the years. The 2020 Fusion hasn’t gone through any recalls so far and there are 34 registered complaints to consider. Let's take a deeper look into the reliability of Ford’s popular sedan.

2020 Ford Fusion User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine - Some owners of the 1.5 and 2.0 engine options reported head gasket failures, even on low mileage examples. Stalling issues on the move are also a common occurrence.
  • Brakes - Complete brake failure was reported by some owners, causing the pedal to bottom out without any braking force, leading to collisions.
  • Transmission - Hard shifting and delays were reported in some rare cases, tracing back to issues with the transmission control module and powertrain control module. In many instances, a complete transmission rebuild was required. The parking mode also failed for some owners, leading to the car rolling away and crashing. Premature wear of the flywheel was also reported.

Electrical Problems

  • Electrical malfunction - Several electrical gremlins from the electronic parking brake failure to erratic gear selection were reported by several owners, leaving the Fusion unusable.
  • Infotainment - Unresponsive and dead touchscreens were reported in several cases, leaving the infotainment system unusable.
  • Dead Batteries - Several complaints were made of the battery dying, even on low mileage examples.

Safety Problems

  • Airbags - Some rare cases of the side airbags not deploying after a collision was reported, causing injuries to occupants.
  • Driver Assistance Systems - Some driver assistance systems like forward collision avoidance were problematic for several owners, tracing back to an issue with the front camera system. Owners also complained about the lane keep assistance system with continuous jerks to either side, despite being in the middle of the lane.
  • Fire Hazard - In some rare cases. the Fusion caught fire due to electrical issues.

Should you buy the 2020 Ford Fusion?

Despite its imminent discontinuation, the Ford Fusion continues to be a worthy contender in the segment, offering comfortable interiors, all the latest technologies, and potent powertrains, all wrapped up in a stunning design. However, even after all these years on the market, the Fusion continues to be plagued by several niggles and issues, dragging its reliability down. Some of the significant issues like airbags not deploying and head gasket failures can be dangerous and expensive. As a package, the 2020 Ford Fusion is still a good option in the market and there have been no recalls so far. When picking a used one up, make sure there are no common issues with it like the parasitic battery draw, head gasket failures, and driver assistance system glitches.
