Overview

Developed on the GMTK2XX platform, the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is a completely redesigned model. The Chevy Tahoe shares its platform with its corporate twin GMC Yukon. The 2015 Chevy Tahoe is powered by a 5.3-liter V8 engine which makes it a great choice in the segment. The interior of the Tahoe feels upmarket and the cabin remains quiet which adds up even more to the overall comfort in the cabin.

Buying Advice

While the base LS trim starts off the string with an impressive standard features list, the mid-range LT trim might just have the best value-for-money proposition in the lineup. Features like standard leather upholstery, a bigger touchscreen display for the infotainment system, heated front seats, and a few others make it a worthy upgrade over the base trim. The top-spec LTZ trim might offer everything the SUV has in store, but it is not worth the crazy hike in the price tag.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Chevrolet Tahoe is available in three different trim levels to choose from, and depending on the trim level and spec, it has a starting price range of $46,300 to $64,085. Although a pretty competent SUV in its segment, it faces steep competition from the likes of Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, Nissan Armada, and other similar full-size SUVs in the market.

Features
8.0/10

The Chevy Tahoe is available in three trim levels LS, LT, and LTZ. The base LS trim starts off strong with features like 18” alloy wheels, power-adjustable front seats with power-adjustable lumbar support, tri-zone automatic climate control, remote engine start, automatic wires, heated power-adjustable manual-folding mirrors, rear parking sensors, and much more. For the LS trim, a Driver Alert package is also available as an option which includes features like power-adjustable pedals, forward collision alert, lane-departure warning, and a vibrating safety alert seat.

All these features are standard on the LT trim which then adds features like a power liftgate, driver-seat memory settings, heated front seats, leather upholstery, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and much more on top of that. Then there is the top-of-the-line LTZ trim level which offers almost all the tech features and creature comforts the SUV has to offer. A few examples are bigger 20” alloy wheels, xenon headlights, adaptive magnetic shock absorbers for the suspension, ventilated front seats, keyless entry, and ignition, heated second-row seats, power tilt-and-telescoping heated steering wheel, power-folding third-row seats, and much more.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is powered by a new and improved EcoTec3 5.3L V-8 engine under the hood across the trim levels. This new V8 is designed to be more powerful and more efficient than ever before. It is rated at 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, and features state-of-the-art technologies including direct injection, cylinder deactivation, continuously variable valve timing, and an advanced combustion system.

The engine is paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and power is sent to the rear wheels on the 2WD variants, and to all the four wheels on the AWD variants. Since towing is a major part of the customers who buy these sorts of SUVs, the Chevy Tahoe has a maximum tow rating of 8,600 lbs for the 2WD variants and 8,400 lbs for the AWD variants.

With a 0 to 60 mph time of 6.7 seconds, along with a quarter-mile time of 15.1 seconds, the Chevrolet Tahoe is in a very similar ballpark with its direct competitors in terms of performance. That being said, with a top speed of 136 mph, the Chevy Tahoe takes the cake in this regard in the competition.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Regardless of the drivetrain, the Chevrolet Tahoe can deliver 16 mpg in the city, and combined mileage of 18 mpg. As for the highway, while the 2WD variants can deliver 23 mpg, the 4WD models drop that to 22 mpg, which is pretty much the same, to be honest. These mileage figures are particularly impressive for a car of its size and weight.

In terms of fuel economy, the Chevrolet Tahoe might just be one of the best, if not the best in its segment. Coming close to the Chevrolet Tahoe in this regard is the Ford Expedition with a slightly larger fuel tank gives it the edge in terms of the total range of the SUV. The Toyota Sequoia offers the least fuel-efficient engine in the competition.

Interior
8.0/10

With a complete overhaul, the interior of the new 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe has been significantly refined in order to enhance both functionality and comfort. In order to improve the quietness of the interior cabin, the new inlaid doors are fit into the body side openings instead of over the top of the body. Overall, the use of high-quality materials all around, along with a significantly improved build quality makes the interior of the SUV a nice place to be in.

Depending on the trim level, you get conveniences and luxuries like power-adjustable front seats with power-adjustable lumbar support, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, heated steering wheel, and much more. While the 1st and 2nd-row seats are decently comfortable and spacious, the 3rd-row seats are quite cramped, especially with regard to the legroom, making it suitable only for kids to seat on.

While the Chevrolet Tahoe takes the crown in the competition with front-row legroom of 45.3-inch, along with a pretty decent 2nd-row legroom of 39-inch, it gets a pretty disappointing 3rd-row legroom of only 24.8-inch, which is not very suitable for tall adults. On top of that, its cargo capacity of 15.3- to 94.7 cu-ft makes it one of the least impressive in the competition with regards to practicality as well. Depending on the trim level, some of the notable interior features include:

  • Keyless entry and push-button start
  • Power-tilting/telescoping steering column
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Fold-flat second and third-row seats, with a power-folding option

How intuitive is the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe’s infotainment unit?

The base LS trim starts off with a 4.2-inch color driver information center display in the center of the cluster, for a vehicle, infotainment, and other data. Opting for the LT and LTZ trims will get you a bigger 8” diagonal color touch screen display in the center of the instrument panel, incorporating secured storage behind the motorized screen. It also comes with the Chevrolet MyLink interface which includes voice control, smartphone app integration, text-to-voice capability for MAP-enabled smartphones, and Siri Eyes Free capability for newer iPhones.

Other standard features include a CD player, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, USB and AUX connectivity, SD card slot, HD radio, and Satellite radio. OnStar with 4G LTE and standard built-in WiFi hotspot is available across the trim level, and the LT and LTZ trim also comes with wireless phone charging to conveniently charge your phone on the go. Notable infotainment features include:

  • 8-inch diagonal color touch screen
  • Multiple USB ports
  • New OnStar with 4G LTE
  • Standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Available navigation

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe gets a newly designed exterior that looks more refined and more modern than the previous generation Tahoe. It has a signature dual-port grille design flanked by projector-beam headlamps and LED DRLs. While 18” and 20” alloy wheels are standard depending on the trim levels, you also get to choose among a variety of available 20 and 22-inch wheels in order to personalize your vehicle. On top of that, a lightweight aluminum hood and liftgate panels also enhance efficiency through reduced overall mass.

At 204-inches, the Chevy Tahoe is one of the shorter SUVs in the segment, but by a very small margin. On top of a comparatively lower ground clearance of 7.9-inch, the short wheelbase of 116.0-inch might be the reason behind its underwhelming third-row legroom and cargo capacity. A few notable exterior features include:

  • Projector-beam headlamps
  • LED DRLs
  • Heated power-folding outside mirrors
  • 18-inch wheel (standard)
  • 22-inch wheels (available)

Safety
8.0/10

Just like the GMC Yukon, the 4th gen Chevrolet Tahoe is also developed on the GMTK2XX platform, specifically the K2UC for the Chevrolet Tahoe. Standard safety tech in the Tahoe includes front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, antilock disc brakes (ABS), traction, and stability control with trailer-sway control.

Another major safety component is the segment’s only Front Center AirBag which deploys from the inboard side of the driver’s seat and inflates between the driver and front passenger, providing added protection for both front occupants in side-impact crashes. On top of that, the Chevrolet Tahoe also includes a few active driver assistance features like:

  • Side blind zone alert
  • Lane change alert
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Forward collision alert
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Crash imminent braking
  • Safety alert seat

Final Verdict

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is a must in your test-drive list when looking for a large, truck-based SUV with three rows of seating and impressive towing capacity. That being said, the 3rd-row seating might just be its biggest Achilles’ Heel with regards to its segment, along with its subpar cargo capacity for its class. Other than that, Chevy Tahoe provides a good value-for-money proposition in its class, be it the competent V8 powertrain with impressive fuel-economy figures or the comfortable and upscale interior, along with a handsome exterior with a strong road presence.

              Get up and goer

Pros - ["Space for everyone", "Smooth drive", "Gets up and goes"]

Cons - ["More cushion for driver seat", "Big tires= more.money", "Bigger cargo area."]

Seriously one of the best cars I've ever owned. Kids can get up and get in easily. Handles well and isn't sassy. No one complains about the drive either. As long as you maintain it, it will be good to you.
