Overview

Redesigned in 2013 and refreshed in 2014, the Chevy Malibu 2015 is here without any major changes in the lineup. With a starting price of $22,645, Chevrolet’s midsize sedan offers 4G LTE connectivity and built-in WiFi hotspot in addition to features of the previous model year. With two different engine options on offer, a 2.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbo, the output figures are limited to 196 horsepower and 259 horsepower respectively. All the trims get front wheel drivetrain as standard. The 2015 Malibu offers good features and specifications but lacks interior space in terms of rear seat legroom.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Buying Advice

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu ticks some right boxes when it comes to features and specifications. Chevy’s family sedan is good but not the best. Some modern driver-assistance features are offered as optional and standard safety features are mostly passive. The NHTSA has given it a five-star safety rating. In terms of recalls and number of complaints, the 2015 model year is fairly on the safer side. With just three recalls and 210 complaints, buyers won’t have to worry much about its reliability factor. However, with changing trends, we suggest that the 2019 and above model years would be the best options.

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is available in five major trim configurations. However, with two powertrain options on offer, there are a total six different trim options. The Malibu does not offer a V6 engine option as some of its rivals. But a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated or a 2.0-liter turbo engine options are on offer with these trims. The family sedan segment is a tough segment and the Malibu faces tough competition from the likes of Mazda 6, Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu for sale

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu aims to be the best family in the segment. Sadly, that’s not the case. The decent powertrain options, potent infotainment system, refined interior layout. Depending on the trim configuration, the starting msrp will range in between $22,645-$30,480. However, when it comes to fuel economy, rear seat legroom, Cruze-like styling, and list of available safety features, make it a laid-back option as compared to some of its rivals. If you are looking for a used 2015 Chevy Malibu then you can find a good one in the price range of $6,999-$17,000, depending on condition, number of owners, and odometer mileage.

Buying Advice

The mid-level LT trims make more sense to us, owing to their list of features and price. The 2LT trim could be a great choice for its list of standard features like 18-inch, 10-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, fog lamps, spare tire, remote vehicle starter system, dual-zone climate control system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar control. If you are up for better performance then you can opt for the 3LT trim which offers the same features and adds a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 259 hp.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu ranks below our family-sedan favorites, mostly because of its back-seat space- The Car Connection

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu might not be the record holder for its exterior design, interior space or fuel economy but it has got its basics right. As per the J.D. Power Consumer Ratings, the 2015 Chevy Malibu is one of the most desirable sedans to buy in the midsize segment. The Malibu has scored an overall 85 out of 100 in the J.D. Power Consumer Rating which can be considered as “Great”. On the other hand, in terms of quality and reliability, Chevy’s midsize sedan can be considered as “Best”. The driving experience and resale scored 76 and 78 points respectively.

Surely, the high reliability score points at fewer niggles and issues with the car. Even the recall count of just three, points clearly at its lower problems. However, the “Cost-To-Own” a car for a term of five years must be considered before buying one. We have divided the cost of ownership into depreciation, fuel charges, insurance, maintenance and repairs. The depreciation will be in the range of $9,000. The fuel, insurance, maintenance and repair charges are estimated to be in the range of $10,200, $7,200, $2,300 and $900 respectively.

Features

The Mazda 6 is the most fuel effcient sedan in the comparison. It is followed by Chevrolet Malibu, Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion. The Toyota Camry is equipped with the biggest gas tank and offers better range than the Malibu despite being less fuel efficient. The Ford Fusion is the least fuel efficient but owing to a larger gas tank size, it offers similar driving range, compared to the Chevrolet Malibu.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is blessed with an unusually upscale cabin by segment standards, at least in terms of design- Edmunds

The interior of the 2015 Malibu is quite functional and to-the-point. To improve the rear-seat legroom, Chevrolet redesigned the inside space. The front seats backrests were made slimmer and the position was lowered, adding some more leg space. However, the driving position feels a bit too low and awkwards at times. The ambient lighting is offered from the 1LT trim onwards, lighting up the curves on the dashboard, giving it a more premium feeling. The front seats are one of the best in class with adequate support and comfort.

Most of the trims get cloth upholstery, while the top-tier LTZ trim has access to leather upholstery. Chevrolet does offer cloth upholstery in Jet Black/Titanium color, Jet Black color, and Cocoa/Light Neutral color as well. The leather upholstery is offered in similar colors with vinyl perimeter accents. The Jet Black/Titanium color, Jet Black color, Cocoa/Light Neutral color and Jet Black/Brownstone color combinations accentuate the appearance of the cabin. The 16.3 cubic feet of cargo space is pretty decent for the segment.

The maximum passenger volume is limited to 100.3 cubic feet and the sedan can accommodate up to five passengers. The LS and 1LT trims are pretty basic with respect to interior features and both of them get cloth upholstery. The 2LT/3LT trims power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and dual-zone climate control system as standard. The LTZ trims offer auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and 8-way power-adjustable front passenger’s seat.

With five seating capacities standard for mid-size sedans, Chevrolet Malibu stacks up pretty good in terms of internal dimensions being next only to Ford Fusion. The Chevrolet Malibu has the largest cargo capacity among the competition at 16.3 cu ft closely followed by the Fusion at 16 cu ft. The Toyota Camry follows Ford Fusion with 15.4 cubic feet of space. The Mazda 6 offers a balanced front and rear row with plenty of legroom but the headroom is limited. However, it offers the least trunk capacity of 14.8 cubic feet

The infotainment system in Malibu provides the customer with the best of both worlds. It provides easy operation of basic functions yet it is highly customizable and capable. This unit provides more ways for the user to stay connected. Malibu comes equipped with a 7 – inch color touch screen with Chevrolet MyLink. Complementing the MyLink to enhance Malibu’s connectivity is the new OnStar with 4G LTE with a built-in Wi-fi hotspot. This unit is supplemented by a 6-speaker sound system which works perfectly. Also, a navigation system is available on the LT and LTZ trims.

Some of the key interior and infotainment features of the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu are:

  • Heated seats
  • 8-way power-adjustable driver seat with power lumbar support
  • Leather upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Chevrolet MyLink Infotainment
  • 7-inch diagonal color touch-screen display
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio All Access Package with a 3-month trial subscription
  • OnStar 4G LTE and built-in Wi-Fi hotspot

Exterior
7.0/10

The overall shape is forgettable, but the Chevy Malibu has an interestingly styled cabin- The Car Connection

The 2015 Malibu carries over the updated styling introduced in the previous model with not many changes. The vehicle features a design trend based on the Camaro with square tail lights and a wide dual-port grille with chrome and headlamps that sweep into the front fenders. The front fascia comes with a signature grille and holds a halogen projector headlight with halogen fog lamps. However, even as the build quality was stepped up in previous years it remains almost average in comparison to the competition. The LTZ trims offer LED tail lamps and dual exhausts with bright tips for a sporty appearance.

The 2015 Malibu also introduces 4 new exterior colors. So, the main color palette now consists of Black Granite Metallic, Atlantis Blue Metallic, Sable Metallic, Champagne Silver Metallic, Ashen Gray Metallic, Silver Ice Metallic, and Summit White. The wheel designs are conservative giving you the options to choose from 16-inch to 19-inch options with 5 spoke alloy except for the 17 inch which has 10 spokes. The 16-inch wheels are standard on LS and 1LT trims, while 17-inch wheels are available on 1LT trim. The 2LT and 3LT trim get 18-inch aluminum wheels, while 19-inch wheels are standard on the LTZ trims.

In comparison to the competition, the Malibu remains at par in external dimensions, while having the highest ground clearance amongst the competition. It remains one of the heaviest cars in competition with 3393 pounds curb weight second only to the Ford Fusion 3431 lbs. The Chevy Malibu offers the shortest wheelbase, while the Ford Fusion offers the longest wheelbase in the comparison. A shorter wheelbase limits rear seat legroom, while a longer wheelbase helps with better stability and rear seat leg space.

Some of the key exterior features of the 2015 Chevy Malibu are:

  • Projector headlights
  • 18" alloy wheels
  • All-season tires
  • Sunroof (Available)
  • Rear spoiler

Safety
9.0/10

The Chevrolet Malibu received the highest possible overall vehicle score of 5 stars from NHTSA. But this feat is undercutting all the safety features offered in the car. Some available features like blind zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert complement the forward collision alert and the lane departure features to enhance Malibu's crash avoidance capabilities.

Some additional contributions to Malibu's safety include 10 standard airbags, two optional airbags, and a rear vision camera. The Chevy Malibu employs greater vehicle control through StabiliTrak electronic stability, all-speed traction control, and four-wheel disc brake with four-channel ABS. The standard OnStar feature uses GPS and cellular technology to automatically call for help in case of a crash.

Some of the key safety features of the 2015 Chevy Malibu are:

  • Tire Pressure monitor
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Theft-deterrent system with content theft alarm

Competition
7.5/10

2015 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2015 Mazda 6

The Chevrolet Malibu is a well-packaged family sedan. It offers better cargo capacity than the Mazda 6. However, the Mazda 6 offers better rear seat legroom and fuel economy. The Mazda 6 has a lower curb weight and sits on a longer wheelbase, enhancing high speed stability. The Malibu is more powerful and offers better performance than the Mazda 6, while being cheaper.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2015 Toyota Camry

The Chevrolet Malibu offers better performance than the Toyota Camry. The Malibu is also slightly more fuel efficient but owing to a larger gas tank, the Toyota Camry offers driving range. The Toyota Camry sits on a longer wheelbase and offers better rear seat legroom than the Malibu. However, the Chevy Malibu excels with better cargo capacity.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2015 Ford Fusion

The Chevrolet Malibu offers better performance than the Ford Fusion. Even the gas mileage is better than the Ford Fusion. The Ford Fusion excels at rear seat legroom and a longer wheelbase for enhanced stability. The Chevrolet Malibu offers segment-leading cargo capacity and slightly higher ground clearance as well.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

The Chevrolet Malibu offers a comfortable ride in its class. It is one of the better-looking sedans in the mid-size category both inside and out. Apart from the looks and drive the Malibu stands at the top among the mid-size sedans in terms of safety and reliability ratings. The additional safety features available in Malibu make it stand out among its counterparts. Also, the presence of a large and spacious trunk with a good infotainment system makes it a solid choice.

Pros - ["Gas mileage", "Interior lighting"]

Cons - ["Battery issues", "Aux port Instead of Bluetooth"]

What sucks the auto stop works when you don't want it to and never when it's suppose to. The radio cam take and make phone calls threw my cell phone but can not play music threw bluetooth, it has an aux port in the center console. There's no way to open the trunk in the cap.

              Malibu review

Pros - ["Gas mileage", "Handling and steering", "Heated seats"]

Cons - ["Low seating", "No led lighting", "Transmission replacement cost"]

Overall the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu is a great car. Ive yet to replace my transmission and im at 187k miles. You are able to steer around curves and corners very smoothly and comfortably. The overall design is sleek and for the most part comfortable. It gets good gas mileage and for a 2.5 I4 motor it has great horsepower.
