Overview

As a flagship offering in the SUV segment by Toyota, the Land Cruiser is a go-to choice for your on- and off-road stints. It is brawny, muscular, and robust in its design and performance, which make it an apt competitor against the likes of the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover and 2015 Lexus LX 570. For the current year, it carries forward with no evident changes to its feature load and design language.

Buying Advice

The 2015 Land Cruiser is available as a single trim offering and it is our only recommendation. It comes equipped with the best-in-class specifications and Toyota aims at providing a holistic experience by combining luxury, practicality, and usability. While there are no optional packages to choose from, the standard set of features will be enough to keep you going on the road.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

A 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser for sale is available at an MSRP of $80,155. It continues to be an impressive performer in the luxury SUV segment, thanks to a mighty V8 engine fueling its power. It drives and handles with great aplomb and poise, despite its mammoth dimensions. It is still the luxury SUV that gets filled with abundant comfort creatures but commands a steeper price than its competitors. Can the 2015 MY weave the same magic on buyers as its predecessor did? Let’s find out.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The monstrous 5.7L V8 engine that sits under the hood of the 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser makes it a formidable machine and a force to reckon with. It churns out 381 hp of power and 401lb.-ft of torque and comes mated to a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission that supports an overdrive facility. Being skillfully curated to be an off-roader, the SUV is available with a standard four-wheel drivetrain, and together each aspect of the powertrain works effectively in tandem with one another.

The full-size SUV can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and can breach the quarter-mile mark in 14.9 seconds recording a top speed of 125 MPH. Despite its bulky build, the 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser is fast-moving. Thanks to its precise steering system and handling capabilities, it drives appreciably on the road and can even devour any untoward surface. There are a number of drive modes that adjust the performance as per the conditions and being a proper SUV, it boasts a towing capacity of 8,200 lbs, considerably higher than what the competitors manage.

The Toyota’s sibling the 2015 LX 570 is similar in powertrain with the exception that it produces 2 extra hp and torque than what the 2015 Land Cruiser manages. However, the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover makes use of a supercharged version of a V6 engine but produces the lowest power and torque output and is rated at 381 hp and 401 lb.-ft, respectively. Yet, it manages to be the quickest clocking 6.3 and 14.6 seconds to the 60mph and quarter-mile mark, respectively, while the Lexus is almost a second slower than its rivals.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser’s V8 engine succumbs to the notion of “higher power means lower efficiency”. It is rated at 13 MPG in the city and 18 MPG on the highway, averaging a combined mileage of 15 MPG. It comes equipped with a voluminous fuel tank that can store 24.6-gallons and helps in covering a total range of 320 and 443 miles in the city and on the highway, respectively.

The 2015 Range Rover in comparison with its competitors is extremely frugal, managing a combined efficiency of 19 MPG. Even its fuel tank is the largest in the segment and has a total capacity of 27.7-gallons and averages 471 and 637 miles in the city and on the highway, respectively. On the other hand, the 2015 Lexus LX 570 is the least efficient and is a notch below Toyota managing 14 miles per gallon of fuel.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser interiors are well planned, thoughtfully laid-out, and most importantly ergonomic. They make use of the best quality materials including perforated leather upholstery, wooden inlays that run through the dashboard and central console, and soft-touch plastics throughout the cabin. The seats feel adequately comfortable and have ample cushioning and bolstering to provide maximum support and the lumbar support for front seats alongside side heating and ventilation help improve the experience.

The ride quality on the inside feels unquestioned and the tranquility of the cabin is noteworthy. However, the 2015 Land Cruiser’s problems are more than one in number. While the third row of seats does allow a total seating capacity of eight passengers, it feels cramped and restricts movement. It also cuts into the cargo space on offer and with all seats in an upright position, there is a total of 16.1 cubic feet of space available for storage.

The similarities between the Toyota and Lexus also extend to their interior space. The only difference between the two is increased shoulder for middle seat passengers and a higher maximum cargo capacity of 83.3 cubic feet in the 2015 LX 570. On the other hand, the Land Rover feels disadvantaged in this aspect as it can seat five passengers only and has a lower trunk volume of 71.7 cubic feet. However, its build quality is supreme and even legroom is better for the second-row occupants.

Some of the salient interior features of the 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser include:

  • 10-way powered driver seat
  • 8-way powered passenger seat
  • Four-zone Climate Control
  • Interior Air Filtration
  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • Cooled Storage Compartment

How intuitive is the infotainment system of the 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser?

Perhaps among its strengths, the less intuitive and rather outdated infotainment system of the 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser does cause a bearing on its likability. While it does have access to a large number of features including an 8-inch touchscreen that gets connected to the rearview camera and available navigation system, the system feels a tad bit unresponsive. However, the Entune smartphone integration app is a blessing in disguise and does help ease usability. As standard, it comes equipped with a 14-speaker JBL sound system that delivers blistering performance.

Some of its other infotainment features include:

  • HD Radio
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • Voice Recognition
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Rear seat entertainment

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser looks prepossessing and enticing. Despite the muscularity in its build, the head and tail lamps add to the subtleness that is on offer. The excessive use of chrome helps to improve the luxurious aura and the 18-inch alloy wheels that the SUV sits on, make it look proportionate. The front grille is imposing, while the roof rails and rear spoiler look typical to the SUV styling.

The 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser’s dimensions are large enough and comparable with its competitors. It is 194.9 inches long, 77.6 inches wide, and stands at a total height of 74 inches. Its clearance from the ground is the highest in the segment at 8.9 inches and its wheelbase of 112.2 inches feels long and accommodating.

On the other, the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover sports the longest wheelbase of 115 inches and is also the widest vehicle in the segment at 78.1 inches.

Some of the salient exterior features of the 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser include:

  • Roof Rails
  • Running Boards
  • Sunroof
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Paint Protection Film
  • Hood Protector

Safety
8.0/10

The 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser has not been rated by both federal and non-federal agencies. However, it remains extremely safe, dependable, and reliable, thanks to a ton of standard specifications available on offer. It comes equipped with 4-wheel ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution, and 14 dual-stage airbag systems. Some of its other safety features include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Pre- and Post-Collision Safety System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Auto-leveling headlights
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Front and Rear Parking Sensors

Final Verdict

The 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser has been on the market for a long time and it intricately understands buyers’ needs and wants from an SUV in its segment. It aims at providing a wholesome driving and riding experience, however, falls short due to its cramped third row of seats and a smallish trunk. But there is a lot to like about it as well. It comes equipped with a large number of standard features, feels quick in its acceleration, and has a luxurious setup. It is a viable option in the segment and if finances are not an issue, the Land Cruiser could be a great choice to consider.
