Overview

The Audi S series has always been the executive sedans with some added punch and power and the S4 is the entry-level to that special category. It provides some extra luxury and features over the already luxurious A4 while being more powerful and better handling. It is intended for someone who wants to drive fast and enjoy their drives while being not flashy or while not making much noise and seeking no attention. The 2021 Audi S4 has also been exactly like it’s expected from an S car. It delivered an impressive performance that could hold up to its competitors that include the BMW M340i, Mercedes-Benz AMG C43 Sedan, and the Infiniti Q50 Red Sport Sedan.

Buying Advice

The Premium Plus trim along with the Black Optic Package that adds the 19-inch 5-V-spoke-star design titanium finish wheels would be the best option according to price and aesthetics. It is the mid-level trim and it comes with a lot of extra features over the base Premium trim. The B&O sound system in the highest Prestige trim can also be added to this trim by paying $999 extra. Overall it is the best option in the Audi S4 lineup.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Among these, the BMW and the Infiniti definitely look like outright performance sedans and they also scream like they are meant to do so. Whereas the S4 and the Merc are more subtle and silent while being as powerful or even more than the rivals. The 2022 S4 is mostly a carryover model and comes with the same powertrain and trim lines. The pricing is expected to have a slight bump and the interior will now feature a carbon fiber interior trim which was an optional feature in the 2021 version. Now let’s explore the different aspects of the 2022 Audi S4 and compare it to its rivals.

Features

The 2022 Audi S4 is expected to arrive in the same three trim lines as the 2021 model. The trims would be named in the signature Audi fashion i.e Premium for the base trim, Premium Plus for the mid-level variant, and the top-most variant is named Prestige. Pricing is expected to start at around $51,545 for the Premium trim whereas the Premium Plus trim would be priced at $55,145. The top-end Prestige trim would likely start at around $59,845. The following table shows the detailed differences in features between each trim-

Release Date

The 2022 Audi S4 is expected to launch by the end of 2021. However, there hasn’t been any confirmation from the side of the manufacturer about a specific date or month.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The S4 delivers respectable efficiency figures considering the fact that it is a performance-sedan. It delivers an efficiency of 21 mpg in the city, 30 on the highway, and 24 mpg of combined fuel economy. The fuel tank capacity of the S4 is on the lower side, but since the mileage is pretty good the car provides a sufficient combined range of 365 miles. The efficiency and the range are on par with other performance-oriented vehicles in the segment.

As in many other comparisons in the past as well as present, the BMW is the best performer here also in terms of fuel efficiency. The Infiniti however, with its bigger tank, manages to deliver the best range even though it has lower efficiency figures. The S4 is also a good performer in terms of efficiency while the Mercedes significantly lags behind. The increased speed and faster timings of the Mercedes sure take a toll on the efficiency of the car.

Interior
9.5/10

The Audi S4 features an elegant and luxurious cabin with plush elements and materials all around the cabin. The brushed aluminum inlays everywhere on the interior of the cabin have now been replaced by Carbon Atlas inlays as standard now which was an option costing $500 in the 2021 model year version. The front seats in the S4 are twelve-way power S sport seats that are available in two standard color combinations which are Black with Rock Gray stitching and Rotor Gray with Anthracite stitching while there are four other available options also.

The interior also features three-zone climate control as standard while interior ambient lighting is an optional feature. When it comes to space the S4 is adequately spacious, providing enough space for the driver and front passenger. The driver seat is very comfortable and adjustable, holding the driver in the right place while the adjustable steering is exceptional. The rear row space is also quite good, but taller occupants might feel a bit cramped. The cargo space in the S4 is not the best in class but it is certainly a usable cargo area measuring 12.0 cu-ft.

The cabin is updated and luxurious in the Audi, Mercedes as well as BMW but the Infiniti seriously needs an update. The space on the inside is also on par with each other between the trio. But it is the Infiniti that dominates in terms of space and it comes with a significantly increased front legroom and also the best cargo space. The cargo area is where the S4 lags behind all of the competition, offering the least amount.

  • Three-zone climate control
  • Different seat color options
  • Twelve-way power front S sport seats
  • Leather seating surfaces
  • Interior lighting plus package with 30 color choices
  • Standard Carbon Atlas inlays
  • Optional Nappa leather seats

How intuitive is the 2022 Audi S4’s infotainment unit?

The main infotainment unit is a 10.1-inch touchscreen unit with haptic feedback and an interface inspired by smartphones. The infotainment unit also comes with voice control functionality. Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system with 19 speakers, a 16-channel amplifier, and 755 watts of power that costs $999 extra in the lower trims and is a standard feature in the Prestige trim. The S4 also features a 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit instrument cluster which changes layout according to the mode selected. Other important infotainment features include-

  • 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit digital cluster
  • Audi MMI touch display system with a 10.1-inch infotainment screen
  • Bang & Olufsen sound system with 3D sound
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Heads-up display
  • Navigation System

Exterior
9.5/10

The 2022 S4 would remain the same as the 2021 version in terms of design and overall exterior looks. The S4 is the perfect blend of elegance, classiness, sportiness, and aggression. The S4 is the perfect executive sporty sedan when it comes to design language. The exterior features sharp lines and sleek slopes. The matrix design all-LED headlamps in the S4, the signature Singleframe grille and the S4 badging dominate and make up the front end of the car. The side profile is typical Audi whereas the rear-end features twin double exhaust tips and LED tail lamps.

The 2022 S4 would be available in three free-of-cost paint options which are Ibis White, Quantum Gray, and Turbo Blue, and five paid color options along with Audi exclusive paint colors which cost a whopping $3,900. The wheel options include 18-inch ones which are standard along with two distinct 19-inch wheels available, one of them part of the Black Optic Package and looks awesome. Overall the 2022 Audi S4 would be a beautiful looking sedan and it would mostly remain the same while some new color options may be introduced.

All of the cars in the competition look beautiful and the choice can be made according to individual perception. The BMW offers the most practicality delivering the best ground clearance whereas the Mercedes has the lowest. The Infiniti is the longest and highest and that shows the increased legroom it provides in the front row. The S4 definitely holds up in terms of exterior beauty and certainly is an updated and beautiful sedan.

  • Standard 18" 5-Y-spoke design wheels
  • Available 19" 5-arm-torsion design wheels
  • Audi Sport 19-inch 5-V-spoke-star design titanium finish wheels (Black Optic Package)

9.0/10

2022 Audi S4 vs 2021 BMW M340i

The BMW M340i and the Audi S4 are both on the same turf in terms of power outputs, speed, and interior space. But there are differences that make both of them stand out. The Audi is the more subtle-looking one and is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Whereas the BMW is a better-handling sedan offering more fuel efficiency.

2022 Audi S4 vs Mercedes-Benz AMG C43 Sedan

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG C43 is more powerful, faster, and better handling than the Audi S4. However, the Audi is also a powerful, great-handling machine offering improved fuel efficiency. However, both of them are on par with each other in terms of luxury and interior space as well as exterior beauty.

2022 Audi S4 vs Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400

The Audi S4 definitely dominates the Red Sport 400 in all matters except for interior space. Whether it be luxury or the latest updated features, the S4 is the better one. The Infiniti does have more front legroom but otherwise, you’ll be better off with the Audi.

Final Verdict

It’s a superb choice in the segment. The S4 as mentioned earlier is an optimum, balanced choice between luxury, elegance, and sportiness. It has a powerful engine with great power outputs combined with an updated and luxurious interior. The price is also on par with the best options in the segment. So that makes the 2022 Audi S4 a superb option.
