Overview

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne is the sportiest SUV on the market and an ideal choice for any sports car enthusiast looking for a perfect balance between athletic performance and utility. Since the most-efficient Cayenne Diesel joined the lineup last year, the 2014 Cayenne Turbo S went on sale recently along with a new Platinum Edition variant which brings styling changes. The Turbo S gets a 550-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 that rockets the SUV from zero to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. The Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus becomes an option across the line. Otherwise, the 2014 model has no significant change. It's still one of the best-driving luxury SUVs with a diverse variety of engines to choose from, including a quirky hybrid variant that boasts 380 horses. This second-generation model is considerably lighter and offers a decent off-road capability as well. The Cayenne's interior ranks among the best in terms of materials quality, style, and attention to detail.

2014 Porsche Cayenne Buying Advice

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne is a second-generation model which spans from 2011 through the 2017 model years. Porsche introduced the most-powerful Cayenne Turbo S for the 2014 model year. Buyers should check out the used 2014 Cayenne if you want the most powerful model, otherwise go for the similar 2012 and 2013 models. The older Cayenne models offer nearly the same equipment and styling as the 2014 model but have a lower average retail price.

No doubt, the 2014 Porsche Cayenne has exceptional handling for an SUV of its size and weight. In terms of capability, the Porsche Cayenne is a highly proficient off-roader, and it can tow 7,716 pounds. The 2014 lineup is available with a long list of customization options. Still, you may want to look at rivals such as BMW X5 and Audi Q7. Though non of these rivals match Porsche's driving dynamics, these competitors offer better value for money. Both X5 and Q7 have a lower cost of ownership, while the Audi also offers a 3-row seating to accommodate 7-passengers.

2014 Porsche Cayenne for sale

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne is available for sale in seven trims: base, S, S Hybrid, Diesel, GTS, Turbo, and Turbo S. Though the base 2014 Cayenne had a price tag of $49,600, its used model retails at under $30,000. The best value and strong performance are offered by the 2014 Porsche Cayenne GTS which is available at an average price of $38,412. It offers a strong V8 engine, and an all-wheel-drive traction control system, along with some Turbo equipment for a track-worthy performance. Opting for a used Cayenne GTS in white paint color will give an additional average discount of $2,158. Buyers with flexible budgets and high-performance demands can check out the Cayenne Turbo, and Turbo S models. The used 2014 Cayenne Turbo S with average mileage can be had at a selling price of $56,862. Another option is that you can lease a new Porsche Cayenne for $999 per month for 36 months with $8,579 due at signing.

Buying Advice

We recommend the S trim as it offers everything you would want from a luxury premium car with oodles of performance and driving fun. At the same time, it is not very expensive compared to the Platinum trim. As standard, it also gets features like Leather upholstery, Heated mirrors, a leather steering wheel, front bucket seats, and a 10 speaker premium audio system. If this doesn’t suit your needs, you can opt for the GTS which would cost you a fortune.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne gets a new model joining the lineup, the 550-hp Cayenne Turbo S. The 2014 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S gets a power boost over the Cayenne Turbo which has a 4.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 paired with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The more 2014 Cayenne Turbo has 500 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque at the helm. You can go for the Cayenne GTS sports a naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V-8 that makes 420 hp. The rest of the 2014 Porsche Cayenne lineup is rounded out by the base 300-hp V-6 Cayenne. With EPA estimated 20/29 mpg city/highway, the Cayenne Diesel is the most efficient model in the 2014 lineup.

Moving on to the interior, it looks absolutely stunning to behold and is such a great place to be in. Behind the wheel, it gives you the adrenaline rush and spirited driving joy you get from the Porsche 911. Furthermore, it rivals the likes of other capable SUVs like the 2014 Audi Q7, 2014 Acura MDX, and 2014 BMW X5.

Buying Advice

We recommend the Cayenne S trim as it offers everything you would want from a luxury premium car with oodles of performance and driving fun. With the best value in the lineup, the S offers a V8 engine along with more standard tech and features including Leather upholstery, Heated mirrors, a leather steering wheel, front bucket seats, and a 10 speaker premium audio system. Retailing at around $30,000, a reconditioned 2014 Porsche Cayenne S's strong value and performance will be a great entry point into the luxury midsize SUV segment.

In comparison, all the cars are closely stacked against each other except for Porsche, but it is the Audi Q7 that delivers the best fuel economy numbers in the competition. The Audi Q7 delivers 22 mpg combined, which is the highest in the class, while the Porsche Cayenne delivers the least combined fuel economy of 18 mpg. The Acura MDX and BMW X5 deliver similar fuel economy numbers.

Interior
8.9/10

Flamboyance is the right word to define the interior of the 2014 Porsche Cayenne. The interior is quite spectacular with a plethora of color options to choose from. Porsche also offers dual-tone interior color options to enhance the commuting experience. Even the base trim gets upscale leather bolstered upholstery, and the seats are utterly comfortable indeed. Also, it is 8-way power-adjustable which helps adjust the seating position as per your comfort.

Coming to the interior dimensions, the 2014  Cayenne has a seating capacity of five passengers in two rows. It has one of the highest headroom in the front row space measuring 39.6 inches and offers a front shoulder room of 58.9 inches. However, the other interior dimensions remain unknown. Exterior
8.9/10

Speaking of the exterior styling, this 2014 Porsche Cayenne is part of a second-generation model redesigned in 2011. The Cayenne very well holds on to the true character and personality of the Porsche and looks like a sports car disguised as an SUV. The headlights look bold and sleek, and it is integrated with dual bi-xenon headlamps that look really arresting. The styling cue and the crease lines are very clean and streamlined. You can just tell that it is very aero efficient even at your first glance.

To distinguish the Cayenne models, Porsche has painted the brakes in different colors with unique badging. Black calipers denote the base V6 and Diesel models, silver for the Cayenne S and Cayenne S Hybrid, and red for the high-performance GTS and Turbo models. The high-end ceramic brake option sports a yellow-painted setup. The Turbo models have a larger trapezoidal grille at the front and four exhaust outlets at the rear.

The Porsche Cayenne looks long but not as long as its contemporaries, and it stands at 191 inches long, 76 inches wide, and 67 inches tall. The second-generation Cayenne's dimensions are bigger than the previous model, about 3 inches longer. It has a modest wheelbase of 114 inches and hangs 9 inches above the ground, which is the highest ground clearance in its segment. With the optional air suspension setup, you can further reduce or increase Cayenne's ground clearance. On the upside, the Porsche Cayenne turns out to be one of the lightest cars in its segment. As a result, it delivers mind-blowing driving dynamics.

In comparison, the Audi Q7 is the heaviest car in the segment with a curb weight of a tremendous 4,938 lb lbs. It is also the longest and the tallest SUV on the lot, while the Porsche Cayenne appears to be the smallest car in the segment. The Cayenne SUV is also the second lightest car of the bunch, which in turn gives a breathtaking power to weight ratio in its class. Some stand out features of the 2014 Porsche Cayenne is listed below:

  • Front And Rear Fog Lamps
  • Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers w/Heated Jets
  • LED Brakelights
  • Deep Tinted Glass
  • 18-inch alloy wheels

Safety
8.5/10

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne hasn’t been subjected to the crash tests by the NHTSA or IIHS, but we all know that it is one of the safest cars out there. On the plus side, it comes with a long list of advanced safety features available across the range. As standard, it comes equipped with features like electronic brake distribution, traction control, electronic stability control, and around six airbags. Some other standout safety features are:

  • Enhanced brake assist
  • Stability control
  • Traction control
  • Airbags
  • Parking sensors
  • Rearview camera
  • Blind-spot warning system

Competition
8.0/10

2014 Porsche Cayenne vs BMW X5

The BMW X5 has been a worthy rival of the Porsche Cayenne for quite some time now and it has its feet planted firmly due to its strong characteristics. The X5 gets a rather unusual powertrain setup driven by a 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 that makes more torque and similar power to the Cayenne. In terms of interior, the X5 is more spacious and gets a bigger boot space while lacking the extra premium touch from the Cayenne. In terms of handling and driving dynamics though, the Cayenne pulls ahead steadily.

2014 Porsche Cayenne vs Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 poses a decent competitor to the Porsche Cayenne but it has certain limitations as compared to the latter. The Q7 is more fuel-efficient than the Cayenne but makes less power than the latter. The Cayenne can do a fair bit of off-roading without compromising much on the comfort aspect whereas, the Q7 might look all tough and have the brilliant Quattro system driving its wheels but its long wheelbase limits its off-roading prowess to quite an extent. On the inside, the Q7 feels as spacious as the Cayenne but lacks the sporty appeal.

2014 Porsche Cayenne vs Volkswagen Touareg

The Volkswagen Touareg challenges the Porsche Cayenne with a strong set of characteristics. It might look like an ordinary utility vehicle in front of the Cayenne but hides a potent V6 under its hood that makes good amounts of power and torque. On the inside, the Touareg gets a simpler layout than the Cayenne but doesn’t compromise on the comfort and space. It also gets a bigger boot than the Cayenne, making it more practical than the latter. However, it does lack the car-like driving dynamics of the Cayenne.

Final Verdict

The 2014 Porsche Cayenne is an all-rounded package and one of the best SUVs out there. Although it gets no major changes for 2014, it still is one of the most power-packed and magnificent cars in its segment. On the contrary, it has some negatives as well. That said, it offers a subpar fuel economy, and some may find the performance of the V6 to be underwhelming. Apart from that, it is such a desirable car from Porsche and it has set a benchmark in the luxury SUV segment. If you are looking for an SUV with spirited performance and frolic to drive, then the Porsche Cayenne could be the right car for you.
