Overview

A roomy three-row midsize SUV with great hauling capabilities, the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder competes against rivals like the Ford Explorer, the Honda Pilot, and the Kia Telluride. The Pathfinder had a complete redesign last year, which resulted in a number of upgrades, most notably a more comfortable ride and modernized technology features. Due to its size, it is also very family-friendly, and adults may sit comfortably in the third row as well. The majority of midsize three-row SUVs don't carry that ability. Additionally, the Pathfinder performs admirably when towing because it has a maximum capacity of 6,000 pounds when appropriately loaded, which is sufficient to pull a small to a moderate trailer. The Rock Creek trim for the Pathfinder was inspired by rocky trails and is new for 2023. Beginning with standard all-wheel drive, an off-road-tuned suspension, and a minor 0.6-inch uplift above conventional Pathfinders with AWD will be seen. Along with having unique 18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, and a little extra power for the V6 engine when using premium fuel, a roof rack on top will be noticed that can hold up to 220 pounds.

Buying Advice

We suggest the mid-level SV trim even though the base Pathfinder S trim has a respectable variety of amenities. Additionally, it includes practical features like heated seats, heated side mirrors, and adaptive cruise control. The Rock Creek trim is an option to think about if you frequently travel off-road or simply like an SUV with a rugged appearance.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Over the past few years, we've noticed a significant increase in off-road-focused trim levels and special packages for crossovers and SUVs, many of which are mainly limited to rugged-looking cosmetic tweaks and a set of rubber floor mats. That isn’t exactly the case with the new Rock Creek as Nissan has managed to incorporate a few functional features that help the car tread through tough terrains.

Features
8.0/10

The trim level will pretty much remain the same as on the outgoing version but a new variant of the pathfinder will be introduced in 2023. The Nissan Pathfinder will now come in 5 trims that will start selling from $34,640 for the base S variant and go all the way to $49,040 for the top Platinum trim. A 3.5-liter V6 engine and 9 speed automatic transmission are shared across all the trims. With the exception of the new Rock Creek, which comes standard with AWD, front-wheel drive is the default, and an all-wheel drive is an option. The Pathfinder will come equipped with 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, and seating for 8 occupants on the base trim which can be changed to 7 occupant configuration from the SV trim onwards with the optional second-row captain’s chair. There are additionally premium packages for SV and SL trim to expand the standard features to keep the cabin experience much more refined and upscale.

We Recommend

Release Date

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder along with the new Rock Creek trim is expected to go public towards the end of summer 2022. There wouldn’t be much of a difference in picking the outgoing model if you cannot wait but the ones looking for the off-road variant will need to be patient.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

Although the Nissan Pathfinder's 9-speed automatic transmission makes a difference, it lacks the hybrid option found in rival vehicles like the Ford Explorer. Fortunately, whether you choose a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, it receives the same 23 mpg combined rating. The EPA rates the front-drive model at 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined, while all-wheel drive increases to 27 mpg highway, matching the front-drive Honda Pilot. The fuel economy goes down by a small margin on the Platinum trim due to its heavier weight and on the new Rock Creek trim as it’s tuned to produce more power.

All the SUVs here produce very similar fuel economy figures and the major difference comes in terms of the total range each of the vehicles provides. Due to the Honda’s large tank, it manages to cover more distance while the Nissan carries the smallest take, needing it to refuel sooner than its rivals.

Interior
9.0/10

The interior of the Pathfinder is contemporary and truck-like, with supportive seats and conveniently integrated controls. Up to eight passengers can fit in the three rows of seating, but customers can opt to replace the conventional second-row bench seat with captain's chairs, which reduces the capacity to seven. Nissan features built-in storage bins all throughout the interior, including a sizable one beneath the center console that is reachable by the driver or passenger in the front seat. Luxuries like semi-aniline leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof are appropriately included in higher trim levels. Nissan exaggerates when it says that the SUV can fit three adults in the third row. Practically, however, it can hold three kids or two fully grown adults. However, the 16.6 cubic feet of space behind that third row is cleverly designed with vertical walls in place of protruding wheel wells. According to Nissan, there is room for four sets of golf clubs. 16 cup holders, a storage console beneath the gear shifter up front, and enough compartments and door pockets to keep the Pathfinder tidy and organized all add to its adaptability. With acoustic laminated glass and other noise canceling measures intended to shield the interior from engine and road noise, improvements to noise and vibration are significant. The panoramic sunroof removes some of those precautions by increasing wind noise at high speeds, but that is the price you pay for touring with bright sunlight passing into the cabin.

Nissan Pathfinder despite having ample passenger room isn’t the most spacious in the lot. The same is the case with its cargo room and when compared to its rivals, the Nissan turns out to be the smallest. Kia manages to stretch both the passenger as well as the cargo area. If third-row comfort and space are equally important for you as other rows of seating, the Ford can be the SUV of choice.

Some standout interior features on the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder include

  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Power adjustable front seats
  • Leather Upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Power-adjustable steering wheel

How intuitive is the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder infotainment system?

The higher variants come standard with a larger 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen while the base level gets a smaller 8.0-inch screen, which runs the most recent version of the NissanConnect user interface. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are included as standard features, and they can be wirelessly synchronized on higher variants. Optional features include an in-dash navigation system, a head-up display, a wireless smartphone charging pad, an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot, a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Although a 13-speaker Bose system is available, a rather modest six-speaker stereo is standard.

Some of the standout infotainment features on the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder are

  • 8.0/9.0-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • USB type-C and Type-A
  • 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster
  • Head-up display
  • Wireless charging pad
  • 6-speaker/Bose 13-speaker audio system

Exterior
7.0/10

Since the Pathfinder was redesigned for the previous year, there won’t be any changes made to the standard line-up, and will carry forward the boxy and muscular stance that it has. The Pathfinder carries the V-motion grille that gives the SUV a very dominating look but the rear changes can be seen with the new Rock Creek trim as its off-road-oriented and Nissan had the responsibility of making it look more rugged and mean. The major difference between the Rock Creek and the regular Pathfinder is that it has incredibly chunky Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires that are wider than the all-season tires on standard Pathfinders mounted on beadlock-style 18-inch wheels, and the combination looks really sick. In addition, the suspension of the Rock Creek has been raised by 0.6 inches. While this may not seem like much, every little bit helps while off-roading. The front end receives a larger faux skid plate in silver, a reworked bumper composed primarily of black plastic, and a gloss black grille with a huge mesh pattern. Although they are entirely constructed of black plastic, the side skirts and rear bumper have the same design as the standard Pathfinder. Additionally, it comes with a tubular roof rack that can support a load of 220 pounds, plenty of Rock Creek decals, and some unique exterior colors like the Baja Storm.

The Nissan Pathfinder has a very intimidating stance due to its tall and long body which is very similar to the dimensions of the Ford. All the SUVs here fall within close proximity in terms of weight but the varying ground clearances give them different looks.

Some of the standout exterior features include

  • 18 or 20-inch wheels
  • LED headlights and LED taillights
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Power liftgate
  • Tubular roof rack for Rock Creek
  • Power folding mirrors

Safety
7.0/10

The SUV has not received the official crash rating from Either NHTSA or IIHS but the latter scored “Good” for most of the aspects of the outgoing model. But it’s evident that the vehicle is safe when it comes with features like front and rear automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitors, lane-departure alerts, and automatic high beams, its suite of standard driver-assist systems does its best to prevent collisions. A surround-view camera system, active lane control, and adaptive cruise control are available options. Nissan offers two levels of ProPilot Assist driver assistance, which allows for hands-free operation for approximately 15 seconds. The system does a good job of keeping the middle of the lane in place, but like most systems, it leaves a significant spacing between the lead vehicle even when it is set to the lowest distance.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder are

  • Active lane control
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front and rear automatic emergency braking
  • Tire pressure monitor system
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

Competition

2023 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2023 Ford Explorer

Both the Ford Explorer and Nissan Pathfinder are massive SUVs but the Ford has a slight edge over the Nissan in terms of the power it makes, allowing it to reach speeds much quicker. However, the Nissan feels more refined and upscale within the cabin, thanks to efforts put into reducing the cabin noise. Nissan also offers an off-road variant that does what it intends to in the best possible way.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2023 Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot packs a strong blow against the Nissan as it offers great value and is equally practical. The Pilot feels very nimble and agile despite being a large SUV due to its lighter body. The Honda also holds a larger gas tank, letting the users tour with lesser fuel breaks.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder vs 2023 Kia Telluride

For a few years now, the Kia Telluride has been a popular choice in the three-row SUV segment. It has one of the longest warranties in the industry and a ton of basic features. The Telluride had a variety of exterior and interior cosmetic improvements for 2023. The Pathfinder offers a little higher maximum towing capacity if you intend to pull frequently, but overall we think the Kia is quite tempting.

Final Verdict

With the update the Pathfinder received last year and with the new Rock Creek, Nissan offers a wide variety of options to choose from. The rugged styling manages to catch the attention of passersby very easily but the SUV isn’t just style as it also delivers great practicality. The Pathfinder definitely isn’t the quickest but does deliver a very refined and smooth ride, making long drives stress-free and effortless. Nissan managed to find the right balance between performance and practicality and with the addition of a new Rock Creek variant, opened a portal to all the off-road junkies that were previously disappointed with Nissan’s offerings. Offering all this for a reasonable price makes the new Pathfinder worth the purchase.

              My Nissan Pathfinder

Pros - ["I love the way it drives and how comfortable it is on long distance drives", "Fuel efficiency"]

Cons - ["No way to open lift gate from inside the car", "One seat is electric and the other isn't."]

Nissan has always been our go to vehicle for the past 15 years. This is the second pathfinder that we have owned. The fact that it is a mid-size SUV and gets up to 32 mpg highway is a big plus. The room it has inside and with the 3rd row seating is great.
