Requested someone to review the case but they say that need to be initiated by the dealership and dealership won’t call me back! The 2017 Toyota Camry is a car that needs no introduction because it is made easily one of the best-selling cars in the country. It earned that reputation by providing a car at a great price range that comes with loads of space, features, and reliability. Toyota Camry complaints have also increased in number over the past few years and this year alone has reported 104 complaints as well as 3 recalls. With some of these being issues related to the transmission, engine, car battery, airbags, steering, and so on, there is the need to know more about the car. Prices start at an MSRP of $23,970, which is very affordably priced considering the competition consists of cars like the Honda Accord, the Hyundai Sonata, and the Kia K5. Let us find out the truth about Toyota Camry's reliability through this article.

2017 Toyota Camry User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical problems:

  1. A large number of owners have raised complaints about the Camry not accelerating when required. Even though the pedal is depressed, the vehicle fails to respond and no warning lights are illuminated. It however has a jerking motion which is usually coinciding with this incident.
  2. Numerous complaints about the steering wheel vibrating and failing to provide electrical boost have also been reported. When this rattling increases, the recommended fix is to replace the whole steering column.
  3. Several owners have also reported issues that feel very similar to what was covered in the Toyota Camry torque converter recall. The transmission jerks and selects wrong gear times, making the car un-drivable. Sometimes it can also pick up speed and accelerate on its own.
  4. Many owners have a safety hazard reported that the brake fails to engage and the car becomes harder to drive in this scenario. It goes down completely to the floor and provides no stopping power. In other cases, the brakes produce a clunking noise which is a common occurrence.
  5. A few cars have been subject to problems in which they caught fire but the cause was not found.
  6. Multiple owners have issued complaints about the car stalling and jerking, having to be stopped and restarted.
  7. Many owners have also reported cracking noise coming from the passenger side, especially while doing cold starts. One owner reported that this is due to no pressure being inside the locking pin of an actuator that connects to the camshaft. Due to this, it is free to rotate relative to the housing and create wear. This will also result in the variable valve timing having improper control.
  8. Few cars have reported suspension problems like a banging noise coming from the front axle. In another case, the passenger front lower ball joint was missing two retaining nuts when the dealer gave the car for delivery.
  9. The tires issued from the factory are extremely sensitive to sidewall damage and have been complained about by many owners.

Electrical system problems:

  1. There has been a huge number of 2017 Toyota Camry battery problems as well. The car battery is dead much before the designed time period and causes a lot of issues associated with the electrical systems of the car.
  2. There have been multiple electrical failures like spiral cable subassembly failing which causes the loss of several systems does the horns, cruise control, and so on. In some cases, the car has a completed electrical shutdown, leaving the passenger stranded on the road.
  3. In another common complaint, the door actuators of the car are known to lock and unlock without the person issuing a command. And most of the time, they fail to function properly.
  4. There was a single complaint in which the driver's seat was moving up and down without any input. When parked, it moved closer to the steering wheel and back. The failure was not able to be duplicated.
  5. One person has also reported an accident in which the car is fried its starter and wiring due to idling and using the air conditioner.
  6. Multiple owners have also complained about the power steering system throwing the car completely out of the lane while driving at high speeds.
  7. Rodents also seem very attracted to the wiring inside the engine compartment and some owners have even had them bite the fuel injection wiring which is very expensive.
  8. Another common failure is the Toyota Camry key fob battery. In many cases, the door cannot be unlocked due to the key fob draining its batteries and can be done so manually.
  9. A few complaints have stated that the car stalls when it gets a full tank of gas and refuses to start the next morning in this case.
  10. One person had the ABS and brake light warnings coming on intermittently and the speedometer going to zero while the car is moving. This also is followed by the RPM and water temperature gauge going completely over all over the place and the AC blowing hot air while being on max cold.

Exterior problems:

  1. There have been multiple complaints about the front and rear windshield as well as the sunroof exploding without any apparent impact. In other cases, there is the complaint of seal separation causing rattles.
  2. One owner had reported that the paint near the front bumper is bubbling and could indicate a quality control issue.
  3. Another owner has reported a popping noise coming from the top of the C-pillar while going over medium-sized bumps and feels like the body metal is bending.

Interior problems:

  1. Some owners were affected by an air conditioning drain hose that leaked into the cabin. This cost damage to the rugs, padding, soundproof insulation, corrosion to the metal frame, and damage to the electrical system.

Safety problems:

  1. There have been a few owners who have complained about the seatbelts. They do not buckle improperly and could be the cause of injury during accidents.
  2. There have also been complaints in which the ABS actuator being faulty resulted in the car losing brake boost, power steering boost, ABS, stability control, speedometer, and so on. This can result in the driver struggling to maintain control. The car also refuses to accelerate during this time and throws up several warning lights.
  3. In most of the safety-related complaints about this car, owners have said that the airbags did not deploy during accidents. This has caused serious injury to passengers as well as severe damage to the car. There has been a 2017 Camry airbag recall but we still feel that other airbags that are not part of the recall are also defective.
  4. In a bizarre incident, one contact had an instance where all the airbags of the car deployed without any impact. This resulted in the owner closing complete control of the vehicle because there was no vision. Several cars had to swerve to avoid a collision. In many cases, they deploy but failed to deflate.

Should you buy the 2017 Toyota Camry?

The Toyota Camry is usually a no-brainer for many people it is widely regarded as one of the most reliable cars. In reality, however, it has a lot of faults that need attention and the brand has not recalled the car for any issues apart from safety problems. That said, we have to take into perspective that this car sells so many units that 100 complaints are not really an issue. It would still be a recommended pick in the segment.
