Overview

In its fourth year, the 2017 Mazda 3 is receiving its first major update. The compact car gets new styling, several new tech features, enhanced active safety equipment including blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping, and new digital information screens in the instrument cluster. Mazda#39;s quot;G-Vectoring Control, quot; software is also reprogrammed to enhance the engine output to create a smoother ride and improve steering. Mazda has also introduced new interior and exterior colors and new alloy wheel styles. The 2017 Mazda 3 price begins from $18,720 including $875 and sees a price hike of just $40 over the previous model year.

Featuring a 3-trim lineup of Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring, the 2017 Mazda 3 MSRP can be an expense of $18,720-$25,070 this season. Having said that, it simply translates to the fact that the range-leader 2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring will cost you $6,350 more than the Base for enhanced specs and assets.

We Recommend

Unless budget is a constraint, opting for the top-spec 2017 Mazda 3 Grand Touring with all its technology, creature comforts, and a more powerful engine, makes for a perfect compact sedan for an enthusiast.

The 2017 Mazda 3 specs for the engine are mostly unchanged for 2017 and continue with a standard 155-horsepower 2.0-liter I-4 or a 184-hp 2.5-liter I-4. The FWD is standard with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The Mazda 3 sedan is a safe car, certified by the IIHS's Top Safety Pick+ designation. While neither the Hyundai Elantra nor Kia Forte can match up with the performance of the Mazda 3 sedan, they offer more value for money. The Toyota Corolla on the other hand offers a wholesome package apart from a strong performance.

2017 Mazda 3 for sale

The 2017 Mazda 3 finance option starts at $324/month for a 60-month period at 3.9% APR with a $2,000 down payment. The Mazda 3 lease deal starts at $272/month for a duration of 36 months and a 10,000-mile annual mileage limit.

Buying Advice

The Grand Touring trim is more versatile. It is offers a long list of equipment which makes it a premium-car. You get 18-inch wheels, power and heated exterior mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a head-up display, dual-zone automatic weather control and a premium audio system. If you opt for the Premium Equipment package, you get additional benefits like a navigation system, heated steering wheel and adaptive LED headlights.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Mazda3 offers an edge over the segment competitors in terms of better agility and handling, two zipping engines, quality cabin materials, and an intuitive infotainment system. However, the compact car class with examples like Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, and Kia Forte is very competitive, and the Mazda 3 sedan has a small trunk and a below-average reliability rating.

The 2017 Mazda 3's five-year cost of ownership is estimated at around $22,500 which includes costs for gas, insurance, maintenance, and repairs. Those costs are slightly higher than estimates for rivals Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla.

Buying Advice

The Grand Touring trim of the Mazda 3 is more versatile and elegantly shaped. It is blessed with an abundance of equipment which makes it a premium car. You get 18-inch wheels, power and heated exterior mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a head-up display, dual-zone automatic weather control, and an updated nine-speaker Bose stereo system as standard commodities with the Grand Touring. If you opt for the Premium Equipment package, you get additional benefits like a navigation system, a heated steering wheel, and adaptive LED headlights.

With the larger 2.5-liter engine, fuel economy drops by 1 mpg in city driving. Mazda's i-Eloop package, which includes a regenerative engine-braking system and active grille shutters, further improves the fuel efficiency, and the Grand Touring sedan is rated to get 31 mpg in combined driving with the automatic transmission.

Previously criticized for looking a bit tacked-on, the Mazda 3's center console screen gets a new housing this year that helps it look slightly better integrated into the dashboard. -Edmunds

2017 Mazda 3 Seating and Comfort

The interior of the 2017 Mazda3 has been one of the best in the class and this year Mazda has made it even better. The 3 seats five on cloth upholstery, though the cabin is full of high-quality panels, materials, and controls with elegant styling. The Mazda3 has one of the most upscale cabins, thanks to the features including imitation leather standard on most trims. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, while the Rear seats are comfortable, its legroom is on the lower side as compared to the rivals.

Improving on the previously irking center console screen, MAzda3 gets a new housing that helps it look slightly better integrated into the dashboard.  A tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel is standard, which is rare for the class. Leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are optional.

As for the rear seat passengers, Mazda has the most headroom but with its cramped rear seat, Mazda3 ranks in the midpack for the interior. For the most comfortable ride in the back seats, Toyota Corolla is the best of the lot.

2017 Mazda 3 Design, Dimensions and Weight

The 2017 Mazda 3 is receiving changes in its exterior styling, which looks much better than the current 2016 model. Not hard to say that the new Mazda 3 is one of the best-looking compact sedans on the market. Upfront the most noticeable is the revised front-fascia. There are new front bumpers and a wider, deeper grille. The sleek look of the 3 is accented by a longer hood as the windshield pillars are still pushed 4 inches further back from the hood. The rear proportions seem to work well for the sedan.

In base Sport configuration, the Mazda 3 offers 16-inch wheels, while stepping up to Touring models adds 18-inch wheels but disturbs the perfect ride quality. Touring also adds body-colored side mirrors to the exterior.

2017 Mazda 3 Vs Kia Forte

The Kia Forte is more than just a budget car and it offers a lot of features at this decent price tag. The 2L naturally aspirated engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, and front wheel driver are similar to the Mazda 3. More similarities with the Mazda are its braking although it is less powerful than its rival and has a slower acceleration rate as well; it does have an impressive fuel economy rate. The upcoming models are speculated to be better in these aspects.

2017 Mazda 3 Vs Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla doesn't disappoint you with its features unlike the absence of a thrilling performance. The 1.8L inline 4-cylinder engine and the 6-speed CVT transmission drive the front wheel based car. It has two options for its infotainment system a 6-inch and a 7.1-inch touch screen along with other modern technologies like adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist and automated emergency braking. When compared to the 3 sedan, it lacks in engine performance, acceleration, and fuel efficiency, making it a less-stronger rival.

2017 Mazda 3 Vs Hyundai Elantra

Improving after each generation, the Hyundai Elantra makes the best car for its price and reputation. It is similar to the Mazda 3 with a 2L inline-4 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission and front wheel drive. It is the toughest contender to the Mazda with excellent braking and fuel efficiency although it does fall behind in engine performance and acceleration. It has spacious interiors and cargo space as well.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Mazda 3 Sedan can be considered to be the best deal for a compact car coupled with performance and styling. When compared to its rivals, it outperforms all of them and thus, at this price, Mazda 3 Sedan is a clear choice for us.
