Overview

Starting at $33,420 the 2018 Nissan Maxima comes with only a couple of addition for this year out of which the highlights being Android Auto and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking now being offered as standard. The 2018 Maxima is powered by a 300 hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine which offers strong performance with under six seconds 0-60 mph timing. In the favor of better fuel economy, a lousy CVT gearbox does transmission duty which does ensure a fabulous 25 mpg of gas mileage in mixed driving conditions but robs away the performance potential of Maxima's V6 up to a certain extent.

The ride quality and overall comfort inside the cabin remain best-in-class while the feature list on offer is adequate to qualify it as a luxury product from a mass-market budget-friendly brand. The Maxima has always been known for its safety and this year it added a couple of more safety features as a standard, as a result, it once again bagged the top honors from IIHS. That said, the Maxima isn't without its set of cons and the first couple of things that come to our mind are lack of rear-seat space and a vague steering wheel. Are there more? and how's the 2018 Maxima overall? All that answered in our review below.

Buying Advice

The mid-level SL trim priced well under forty-grand hits the sweet spot in terms of features on offer and being value for money. This trim commands a slightly above three grand premium over the base trim and for the premium, it offers a long list of additional features. First and foremost you add a few more driver-assist features followed by a premium sound system, active noise cancellation, a panoramic sunroof, and a couple of other creature comfort features. Thus doing complete justice to the price premium.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2018 Nissan Maxima comes with a steep base price but offers the 3.5-liter V6 engine with a CVT gearbox and FWD as standard. The engine delivers respectable performance and impresses with its gas mileage although a hybrid Maxima could break the headlines for fuel efficiency. That said, the Maxima isn't exactly a fun-to-drive car instead it is more of a sedate and comfortable ride. While those who still want a sporty Maxima can look up to the SR trim that gets a sport-tuned suspension and other upgrades for some engaging drive but on a side note, the ride quality on the SR trim is stiff compared to the other model.

Coming inside, the Maxima has a well-appointed cabin with more than generous front row seats but in the process, the rear seats lack sufficient legroom which is a bummer considering the Maxima falls under a full-size sedan. While that's about the interior now coming to the safety section the Maxima bagged top honors from IIHS and got some really impressive safety scores from NHTSA too. That said, in this review, we will pitch the 2018 Nissan Maxima against the rivals like Toyota Avalon, Dodge Charger, and Chevrolet Impala to see how does it stack up against them.

Features
7.0/10

The 2018 Nissan Maxima is a full-size five-seater sedan that is offered in five trims and with a 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a CVT gearbox. The trims available for the 2018 Maxima include S, SV, SL, SR, and Platinum. The S trim is the base trim with a starting price of $33,420, the equipment levels offered on this trim would have been adequate but the steep price makes it look under-equipped. The next-in-line is the SV trim priced at $35,420, this trim adds on a few more creature comfort features.

The SL trim is the mid-level trim priced at $37,840, this trim adds a lot of features like a premium sound system, panoramic sunroof, driver-assist features, etc. Next to it is the SR trim priced at $38,680, this trim is based on the SL trim and is the sporty version of the standard Maxima sedan. This trim gets away with the sunroof but adds performance parts and active engine braking to assist while aggressive driving.

Sitting at the top is the Platinum trim commanding a price of $41,090 and is based on SL trim with a few features like LED headlights and ventilated seats being carried from the SR trim. There is also a Midnight Edition Package and a rear spoiler both optional on the SR trim. The Midnight package gets the exterior bits finished in black and also includes a 360-degree camera, auto-dimming driver-side mirror, and driver's seat memory function.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2018 Nissan Maxima has an EPA estimated gas mileage of 21 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg in mixed driving conditions. These figures are average in the segment while the Maxima doesn't offer a hybrid model thus putting it at a disadvantage in front of rivals like the Toyota Avalon, which has a claimed 40 mpg of gas mileage in mixed driving conditions from the hybrid model. That said, the Maxima sedan comes with an 18-gallon fuel tank capacity which is sufficient to cover 378 miles in the city and 540 miles on the highway from a tankful of gas.

In their comparison, the Chevrolet Impala has the highest city gas mileage which is 1 mpg more than what the Maxima returns while on the highway all the sedans offer a similar 30 mpg of gas mileage.

Interior
6.0/10

“The surprise bonus is an interior that’s beautifully detailed, lavishly finished, and sensibly configured. Instead of options, there’s a staircase of five different trim levels.” – caranddriver

2018 Nissan Maxima Seating and Comfort

With the 2018 Nissan Maxima's cabin, Nissan has tried to set the luxury bar high. Mostly known for making budget cars, the cabin of the Maxima is a far cry from being budget. There is soft-touch plastic used all-around with top-notch fit and finish level seen all-around. The dashboard is ergonomically laid out with the central part that houses the infotainment and HVAC controls slightly tilted towards the driver for easy reach. That said, ingress and egress from the Maxima is a bit of a hassle due to the low slung ride height.

The cabin of the Maxima feels big and roomy with an ample amount of space in the first row. But the same isn't the case at the rear. The rear seats come with a rather small legroom and courtesy of the sloping roofline the rear headroom also remains tight. Thus sitting two tall passengers back to back in the Maxima will be an issue. That aside, the seat comfort is really good while the higher trims with quilted stitching and leather upholstery could give luxury sedans a run for their money.

Compared to the rivals the Maxima with the smallest wheelbase isn't the most spacious sedan. While the Dodge Charger with the longest wheelbase also isn't the most spacious instead it is the Chevrolet Impala that comes with 111.7-inches of wheelbase and provides the perfect balance of front and rear cabin space. That said, the Charger being the widest offers the best shoulder room in both rows.

Interior Features:

  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Fabric-trimmed seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Available heated and ventilated front seats
  • Available heated steering wheel
  • Available driver's seat memory function

2018 Nissan Maxima Infotainment System

The 2018 Nissan Maxima from this year comes with Android Auto as standard while Apple CarPlay was made standard last year itself. As for the infotainment, it gets an 8-inch touchscreen unit as standard. Other standard features include navigation, an eight-speaker sound system, USB ports, CD player, satellite radio, etc.

Moving up to the SL trim adds a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system. While top-of-the-line Platinum trim adds NissanConnect services through which provides vehicle location, remote start, emergency calling, and automatic collision notification.

2018 Nissan Maxima Cargo Capacity

The 2018 Nissan Maxima offers 14.3 cubic feet of space in its trunk which is not the biggest in the full-size sedan segment.

However, the rear seats can be folded to increase the boot space while there are a couple of storage spaces in the cabin to keep small items.

In this comparison, the Chevrolet Impala offers the biggest 18.8 cubic feet of trunk space which compared to the Maxima is more than 4.5 cubic feet.

“Nissan has packed a lot of styling onto the Maxima sedan. Nissan’s V-Motion grille treatment dominates the front end, and like it or not, you sure know what’s coming your way. ” – kelleybluebook

2018 Nissan Maxima Dimension and Weight

The 2018 Nissan Maxima carries forward the looks which were last changed two years back. The redesign gave the front fascia a completely new look while the design of the headlight remained similar its just that it grew bigger in size. In short, Nissan has incorporated a lot of design elements to the front which in our view looks well executed and delivers an aggressive yet premium look to the Maxima.

Move to the sides and the sloping roofline immediately catches your attention which does look great but seriously hampers the rear headroom. While the rest of the side profile is plain and straight forward with you getting 109.3-inches of wheelbase between the wheels, this happens to be the smallest in the segment. At the rear, the LED brake lights wear a similar design as the headlights while two exhaust pipes at extreme ends poke out from the bottom of the rear bumper.

In this comparison, the Nissan Maxima comes out as the smallest sedan dimensionally. While the Chevrolet Impala is the longest and the tallest car. As for the Dodge Charger, it remains the widest sedan with the longest wheelbase.

Exterior Features:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Foglights
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Available front and rear parking sensor
  • Available 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Available automatic wipers
  • Available LED headlights

Safety
9.0/10

In terms of safety features, the 2018 Nissan Maxima is decently equipped right from the base trim. As a result, it scored a perfect overall safety score from NHTSA with a four out of five stars rating in the front crash test and a perfect score in the side crash and rollover mitigation test. That's not all the IIHS gave the 2018 Maxima 'Top Safety Pick' award with the highest rating of 'Good' in all its six parameters.

Safety Features:

  • Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Forward Collision Warning w/ Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) w/ Easy-Fill Tire Alert
  • Available Blind-spot monitor w/ rear cross-traffic alert

Competition

2018 Nissan Maxima vs 2018 Toyota Avalon

The 2018 Toyota Avalon is the direct rival of the Nissan Maxima. It also offers a V6 engine but comes mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox whereas Maxima gets a CVT. Both the sedans are mile munchers but when it comes to performance the more powerful Maxima definitely takes the lead. While as for the interiors both the sedan offers a long list of creature comfort features and a luxurious cabin for the segment.

While both the sedans offer a similar set of safety features what does give an edge to the Avalon is the available hybrid model which strikes with buyers with a high daily running as the hybrid Avalon returns an impressive 40 mpg of gas mileage under mixed driving. That said, you won't go wrong with either of the sedans but if you need better gas mileage then the Avalon hybrid should be your pick.

2018 Nissan Maxima vs 2018 Dodge Charger

The Dodge Charger is a completely different sedan and caters to a different set of customers. To put it in simple words the Dodge Charger is a  muscle car masquerading as a practical sedan. It has a long list of trim that offers above-average to atrocious levels of performance. This is what the Nissan Maxima can't boast about also it has a higher base price compared to the Charger thus putting it at a further disadvantage.

What separates the Maxima from the Charger though is the cabin. The cabin of the Maxima is leaps and bound ahead of the Charger both in terms of quality and comfort levels. Thus if you want a practical muscle car then only go for the Charger otherwise the Nissan Maxima would be a better fit for sedate drivers who prefer comfort over anything else.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Nissan Maxima is a family sedan with a dash of luxury. It has a fine blend of offerings for a wide set of audiences. The base trim is spot on for people on a tight budget, The SL and SV trim is for those who need more luxury amenities while the SR trim has been given to keep in mind the enthusiast buyers. While the top-end Platinum trim is targeted at customers who don't want to spend a lot of money yet prefer a feature-rich and luxurious ride. So with one shot, Maxima tries to hit a lot of targets and has been successful up to a certain extent.

That brings us to the cons of Maxima, the first thing it desperately needs is an AWD and a proper 6- or 8-speed automatic gearbox, the other thing it needs is to work on the steering wheel, and lastly the cabin could be slightly reconfigured to distribute space proportionally in both the rows. If Nissan fixes these things then for sure they have a perfect winner under their stable which would be a near-perfect full-size sedan.
