Overview

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata is available for sale with a base price tag of $22,050. There are a number of changes made this year. Starting from the outside, the Sonata received a refreshed exterior styling. On the performance front, the suspension and steering have been tweaked and a new 8-speed automatic transmission for the 2.0T models. The Sonata also gets a new center stack with updated controls while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are now standard safety features across the lineup.

The Sonata's powertrain includes a 185-hp 2.4L, a 178-hp 1.6L turbo, and a 245-hp 2.0L turbo engine. Among these engines, the most fuel-efficient is the 1.8L four-cylinder and the quickest one is obviously the 2.0L turbo-4 engine that can do 0-60 in 7.1 seconds. Moving to the interior, the Sonata offers a simple yet modern layout and offers an array of features, some of which are absent in its rivals. Speaking of rivals, the Sonata gets its rivalry from the Toyota Camry, the Honda Accord, and the Mazda 6

Buying Advice

The SEL trim is a great value for money as this model adds push-button start, proximity keyless entry, a power driver's seat, heated front seats, a hands-free trunk, satellite radio HD radio, leather steering wheel, and an additional port. Also, don't forget to opt for the Tech package that adds some of the best driver-assist features.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata is the proof that sedans don’t have to be boring- Cnet

As SUVs are flooding the market these days, it's good to see that Hyundai is still putting some effort into midsize sedans, a segment that has been pushing the industry for decades. The latest Sonata is one of the smartest picks in the midsize family sedan segment. It's affordable, has great value for money, is safe, roomy and it comes with a killer warranty.

The true cost to own the Sonata is slightly more than the segment leaders but considering the features list, it's really nothing. According to our estimation, it may cost $6,600 every year for its maintenance, repair, fuel, etc. The average cost per mile is $0.44, which is average for the segment. The Sonata has been a strong competitor in the segment for its good reliability as well.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The Hyundai Sonata provides good fuel economy for such a roomy sedan- The Car Connection

The Hyundai Sonata performs pretty week in this regard. The EPA says that this sedan should return 25 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on a highway, and 29 MPG combined. Those who want to save more money should go for the Eco trim as it gives 28 MPG in the city and 37 MPG on a highway with a combined mileage of 31 MPG.

With the top-of-the-line 2.0L engine equipped, the combined mileage is around 26 MPG, which is still good for the power it makes. Owing to its large fuel tank, the Sonata delivers 601 miles combined in its most efficient form. The base engine's driving range is calculated to be 564 miles while the 2.0L engine has the lowest combined range of 509 miles.

The Toyota Camry is the most fuel-efficient sedan in this segment. It returns 5 MPG combined more than the Sonata with its base engine, though packing a powerful engine. The Honda Accord ranks below it with good gas mileage. The fuel estimates of the Mazda 6 are almost equivalent to the Sonata but it is more efficient. However, the Sonata has the best driving range here.

2018 Hyundai Sonata Seating and Comfort

The Hyundai Sonata's interiors strike a nice balance between function and style. In typical Hyundai fashion, the cabin doesn't wow occupants with futuristic or fancy materials. Most of the interior trim is hard plastic but nice graining and metal pieces add some flair. This five-seater comes standard with cloth upholstery but leather seats are available from the Sport trim onwards. The front seats are comfortable for a wide variety of body types.

They have tons of space and lots of adjustments to get comfortable behind the wheel. Getting into the rear seat does require some ducking but at least the entryway is good-sized. The back seats are generous for the class and offer a comfortable seatback angle. They are still spacious but not quite as roomy primarily in terms of legroom. Still, normal-sized adults should be perfectly fine. Overall, the cabin feels modern and accommodates passengers nicely.

The Honda Accord's cabin is the most spacious here and its interior quality is better than the Sonata. The space levels in the Mazda 6 and the Toyota Camry are almost the same but Mazda uses premium materials in its cabin while the Camry uses a lot of hard plastics like the Sonata.

2018 Hyundai Sonata Infotainment System

The infotainment duties in the Hyundai Sonata are handled by the Blue Link 7-inch touchscreen display. The interface is simple to understand and user-friendly. There is a lot to like about the simplicity of this touchscreen because it has physical shortcut buttons to help you jump between menus as well as physical volume and tuning knobs. There's also support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A 6-speaker stereo is standard but it can be upgraded to an 8-speaker Infinity premium sound system. An 8-inch version of the screen is standard on the Limited 2.0T trim and optional on all trims. There is an unambiguous separation between climate and audio controls. All those controls are easy to reach from the driver's seat. Every Sonata now provides three years of Blue Link subscription services plus it is now compatible with Amazon Alexa

2018 Hyundai Sonata Interior Features

Some main cabin features of the new Sonata include:

  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function leather, heated steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Push-button start
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • Power front seats
  • Heated ventilated front seats
  • Aluminum foot pedals
  • 7-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 6-speaker stereo
  • 4.2-inch electroluminescent driver's display
  • Voice-recognized navigation system
  • Wireless charging

2018 Hyundai Sonata Cargo Volume

The Hyundai Sonata continues to impress in this field as well. You get 16.3 cubic feet of cargo space which is right near the top of the class. Four bags could easily fit inside, perfect for a small family. The cargo floor is flat, allowing for the storage of more items. Of course, you can fold down the rear seats for even more space.

There's a nice trunk opening to make it easy to get stuff in and out. A hands-free tailgate is included in all but the base SE trim. Note that the rear seats don't fold completely flat. The loading lip is flat which means that that it is easy to load heavy items into the trunk. The low leftover height also comes in handy for easy cargo loading.

Trunk volume (cu-ft.) 16.3 14.7 16.7 14.1

The Honda Accord's trunk is slightly more spacious than the Sonata but that's not much of a concern. The cargo space offered in the Mazda 6 is average for the class. But, it turns out that the Toyota Camry is the least practical vehicle in this class. Therefore, the Sonata makes a good option for a family sedan.

2018 Hyundai Sonata Dimensions and Weight

The Hyundai Sonata is new from pretty much every angle this year and it's still a nice-looking sedan. The most notable change in terms of design is the front fascia. The new hexagonal grille also called for a change in the design of the headlights and limited the space with the fog lights. The new Sonata looks aggressive and harmonious even though the grille might be reminiscent of some Audi models. The wheel options of the Sonata include 16, 17, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The low ground clearance makes it easy to get in and out of the vehicle.

The Sonata has the shortest wheelbase in this competition. A nice design touch is the chrome line which starts from the front of the car and goes all the way through the doors and ends at the back window. Speaking of aggressive features, the new rear is also redesigned to give a sportier feel. From behind, the trunk makes the Sonata look extremely tall and bulky. All in all, even though the Sonata is supposed to be a conservative midsize sedan, it is good to say that the design aesthetics succeeds in being much more

The Mazda 6 sits 1.2 inches higher than the Sonata. Therefore, the drivers can be prepared for driving over high bumps. The wide wheelbase of the Toyota Camry results in better legroom in the rear row. At 3,131 pounds, the Honda Accord is the lightest vehicle in this competition and therefore, displays excellent performance on the road.

2018 Hyundai Sonata Exterior Features

Some cool exterior highlights of the refreshed Sonata are:

  • LED headlights with cornering function
  • LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Chrome door handles
  • Chrome grille
  • Chrome rocker panels
  • Chrome window trim
  • 16, 17, and 18-inch alloy wheels

Competition

2018 Hyundai Sonata vs 2018 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry has a higher initial cost than the Sonata. It displays excellent on-road performance and is also available with a powerful V6 engine. It is the most fuel-efficient sedan in this segment. Its rear row is more comfortable for adults. The Camry also offers better safety features and reliability. That said, the Sonata offers more trunk space and features.

2018 Hyundai Sonata vs 2018 Mazda 6

The Mazda 6 isn't athletic as the Sonata but it is more fun to drive. It is also more efficient than the Sonata. On the inside, premium materials are used to decorate the cabin and it also provides more rear-seat passenger space than the Sonata. However,  its cargo space is very less. The Mazda 6's safety ratings are good and offer more driver aids than the Sonata.

2018 Hyundai Sonata vs 2018 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is an expensive alternative to the Sonata. It is quicker than the Sonata and its fuel economy is outstanding. The Accord's cabin feels roomier and its trunk volume is almost similar to the Sonata. The Sonata is ahead of the Accord in terms of standard features. Apart from great safety ratings, the Accord offers a long list of standard driver-assist features.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata is an eye-catching, comfortable value sedan with a long warranty and a big trunk. For most midsize sedan buyers, that's really all you need. Now there are other cars in its class that are better to drive or more stylish but as an everyday all-rounder, the Sonata certainly stacks up pretty well against its competition.
