Overview

The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta is available for sale with a base price of $18,645 and comes in five trims- S, Wolfsburg Edition, SE, SE Sport, and SEL. The base engine is a 150-hp 1.4L engine that is available on the lower trims. The SE Sport and SEL models replace it with a 170-hp 1.8L engine that can do a 0-60 MPH sprint in 7.3 seconds.

The Jetta's gets mixed reviews as it is spacious but also looks cheap. The main strong point of the Jetta is the large trunk volume. It also packs a good amount of safety features but its ownership costs are very high for a compact sedan. The Jetta goes head-to-head against the Toyota Corolla, the Honda Civic, and the Chevrolet Cruze

Buying Advice

Just go for the SE trim without having second thoughts. This trim adds some cool features such as a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a sunroof, satellite radio, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Characteristic of a Volkswagen, the Jetta has competent handling and a functional interior- CarAndDriver

Although the Volkswagen Jetta has many good points, it still ranks lower than its class rivals as there is nothing unique about this sedan. However, this is going to be the last model year of the sixth generation has the upcoming model will be fully redesigned and will ride on the brand's latest MQB platform. With this move, Volkswagen is hoping to boost sales volume.

Also, the ownership costs of the Jetta are higher than its rivals. It is calculated to be $6,600 including maintenance, repair, fuel, etc. This is one of the greatest reasons for its low rank. Speaking of fuel costs, the average cost per mile in the Jetta is $0.44, which is more than its rivals. It has a good reliability score of 82 out of 100 but its rivals have scored much better.

Features
7.0/10

The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta lineup is simple to work through, but also a little pricey against rivals- The Car Connection

With the addition of the Wolfsburg Edition and SE Sport trims this year. the total trim count of the Volkswagen Jetta is five. These include S, Wolfsburg Edition, SE, SE Sport and SEL. The Jetta has a low starting price of $18,645 and it extends up to $26,245 for the top-end SEL trim. Also, two different engines and transmissions are offered in the Jetta.

The Jetta comes with a limited set of standard features. The new Wolfsburg Edition trim adds fog lights, leatherette seats, heated front seats, and a leather shift knob while the SE Sport trim includes all the features of the SE trim but adds a powerful engine. The $495 Cold Weather package adds heated front seats and windshield washer nozzles, only for the S trim.

We Recommend

Just go for the SE trim without having second thoughts. This trim adds some cool features such as a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a sunroof, satellite radio, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2018 Volkswagen Jetta’s base engine is thrifty, but more powerful choices are a lot thirstier- The Car Conenction

The fuel estimates of the Volkswagen Jetta are on the same level as its rivals but it is less efficient. With a manual transmission, the Jetta returns 28 MPG in the city, 40 MPG on a highway, and 33 MPG combined. Opting for the automatic transmission drops down the combined mileage by 1 MPG.

The SE Sport and SEL trim with the 170-hp 1.8L engine are rated at 24 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on a highway, and 28 MPG combined. The models with manual transmission deliver 493 miles combined which is the best in the range while the automatic models settle for 478 miles. The top two trims can drive up to 413 miles only.

Range (City/Highway/Combined; Miles) 406/580/493 347/496/421 356/462/409 370/548/459

Thanks to its large fuel tank, the Jetta offers the best range in this competition. The Honda Civic turns out to be the most efficient sedan with a decent range. The Chevy Cruze is slightly more efficient than the Toyota Corolla and hence, its highway and combined mileage are greater which ultimately results in a better range.

Interior
6.0/10

When it comes to interior space, the Jetta shines- Edmunds

2018 Volkswagen Jetta Seating and Comfort

The interior of the Volkswagen has a clean layout but the materials lack quality and give out a cheap feeling. This five-seater comes standard with cloth upholstery while the rest of the trims get leatherette seats. The front seats are comfortable and supportive. The seat bottoms are well-padded with soft cushions. The driver's seat is 6-way power-adjustable while both seats are heated except for the base S trim.

There is plenty of passenger space up front so full-grown adults can sit comfortably. The rear seats stand out in the class as they are spacious and can tuck in adults with comfort. The recline angle isn't too upright which makes for a good seating position. The legroom is a bit less than its rivals but adults can sit comfortably. On the other hand, headroom is on par with its rivals. A moonroof is available from SE trim and above.

The Toyota Corolla offers the best legroom in the rear row but its interiors feel cheap like the Jetta. The Chevy Cruze's rear-row space is kind of less but its standard features list is impressive. On the other hand, the Honda Civic offers decent space in both rows while its interiors are comfortable.

2018 Volkswagen Jetta Infotainment System

The S and new Wolfburg Edition trim come with a 5-inch touchscreen display that supports auxiliary audio input, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and a single-disc CD player. The rest of the models get a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both the screens have good touch responses and the graphics are crisp.

A 4-speaker stereo handles the sound souties on lower trims but higher trim owners will like the sound quality of the 8-speaker Fender premium audio system. The top-spec SEL trim also adds a voice-recognition navigation system that works just fine. Unfortunately, the larger screen does not support smartphone gestures like pinch-to-zoom.

2018 Volkswagen Jetta Interior Features

Some other cabin highlights of the Jetta are given below:

  • Cloth & leatherette upholstery
  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • Push-button start
  • Dual illuminating vanity mirrors
  • 6-way power driver's seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Proximity keyless entry

2018 Volkswagen Jetta Cargo Capacity

The Volkswagen Jetta offers a trunk volume of 15.7 cubic feet, which is one of the largest in its class. If you need more space, the rear seats split in a 60/40 fashion so you can store long items. The Jetta also benefits from low liftover height, making it easy for owners to load heavy items into the trunk.

However, the trunk opening is small. That means it can be tough if you want to load large suitcases into the cargo area. The Jetta also offers decent interior storage too. The glovebox is decently sized and on the top-end SEL trim, it is exclusively cooled. The door pockets are small and the center cubby storage is too shallow.

Trunk Volume (cu-ft.) 15.7 15.1 13.0 14.8

The Honda Civic is the only sedan that can match the Jetta's trunk volume. Also, it has a wide opening, unlike the Jetta. The Chevrolet Cruze's trunk offers a decent space for a small sedan but the Toyota Corolla offers the least cargo space in this segment. Therefore, for those who think cargo space is their top-most priority, the Jetta is the best option.

While the Jetta may not scream, “Look at me,” it will stand the test of time better than a fair share of its rivals- Kelley Blue Book

2018 Volkswagen Jetta Dimension and Weight

The Jetta carries the traditional classic Volkswagen look on the front. On the middle is a large Volkswagen emblem that sits on the chrome-accented grille with halogen headlamps on either side.  On the lower fascia, there are large air vents with fog lights, the latter only available on the SE Sport and SEL trims. The Jetta has a low ground clearance so getting in and out of the vehicle should be easy. It also plays a role in its handling characteristics.

The wheel options for the Jetta include 16, and 17-inch alloy wheels depending on the trim level. From the side view, the design is kept pretty much simple. The Jetta has an overall length of 182.2 inches, which is more par with most of its rivals. Its wheels are spread at 104.4 inches wide, which is shorter than most of the competition. But, that's not a concern as it offers an adult-friendly rear row. At the back, the design of the taillights looks kind of dated.

The Toyota Corolla sits 1.5 inches higher than the Jetta. Therefore, you can ride over high bumps without fearing the car's underbelly being scraped.  Also, its wheelbase is equal to the Chevy Cruze and the Honda Civic but its truly offers more rear-seat space. At 2,989 pounds, the Cruze is slightly heavier than the Jetta but it still manages to offer a zipper acceleration.

2018 Volkswagen Jetta Exterior Features

The list of driver assistance features available in the Jetta are:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Front & Rear Parking Sensors
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Rearview Camera
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

Competition
6.0/10

2018 Volkswagen Jetta vs 2018 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is just as powerful as the Jetta and it is also known for its sporty handling. It is also the most fuel-efficient sedan in this segment. On the inside, the Civic offers spacious seats while its cabin uses nicer materials than the Jetta. The Civic also offers a decent list of safety features but one main advantage over the Jetta is low ownership costs.

2018 Volkswagen Jetta vs 2018 Toyota Corolla

To get a manual transmission, you need to look for higher trims in the Toyota Corolla, which are more pricey. The Corolla offers sluggish acceleration and dull handling in terms of performance. But, its fuel efficiency is great. The Corolla's rear row is spacious but it falls short in trunk volume. It has also won the Top Safety Pick award as it offers more standard safety features.

2018 Volkswagen Jetta vs 2018 Chevrolet Cruze

The Chevy Cruze is the most affordable compact sedan in this competition. It has better acceleration, though it makes similar power as the Jetta. It also displays exceptional fuel economy but fails to offer more rear-seat space and trunk volume than the Jetta. It misses out on safety features like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

Final Verdict

Overall, the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta is still a hell of a good choice thanks to its safety ratings, spacious interior, and classy looks. But it does need to step up a bit with regard to materials and driving dynamics because, at this point, nearly everyone in this class is caught up. It's time to inject some Deutschland back into the Jetta and hopefully that's what the MQB platform will bring in the seventh generation.

              Jetta is under rated

Pros - ["Stability on dry roads", "Durability; nothing broke down up to 160000 miles"]

Cons - ["Instability on wet roads and when raining", "Oil recommended by manufacturer is ow-20 is a light oil; i experience little of oil burn"]

I bought Jetta R line in Dec 2019; brand new one. I travelled everywhere in it. There is more than 175000 miles on it now and it runs as smooth as the first day I got it. It is so stable when turning and acceleration is amazing for 1.4L engine. The I got in it is way more than the price I paid, which means standard options are higher than other brands.
