Overview

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is one of the few crossovers in its segment that offers three rows of seating. The Outlander has never been a crossover with exciting performance or outright acceleration, however, it manages to deliver a pretty decent fuel economy for the segment and you always have the practicality of a crossover. It is a great choice if you are considering a crossover SUV for weekend getaways or to carry your children around in the rear seats comfortably.

Buying Advice

We recommend going for the SE trim as it offers the best value. You get the option for the AWD variant and a host of other features. If you can live with the base engine, then the SE trim will get the job done for you. But for those who want a more powerful V6 engine, then they have no other choice than to go for the top GT trim. With SE and GT trim, you also have the option to go for the optional Premium package to add features like a sunroof, roof rails, power driver seat, power liftgate, and a 9-speaker Rockford Fosgate surround-sound audio system that also comes with satellite radio.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander starts at an MSRP of $23,195 and is offered in three trim options to choose from. It also offers two powertrain options, and you can get it in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive variants depending on the trim you select. The 2015 Outlander competes against the likes of popular crossovers from the segment such as the 2015 Mazda CX-5 Touring and 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium.

Features
9.0/10

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is offered in three different trim options, namely ES, SE, and GT trims. The ES trim starts at an MSRP of $23,195 and is available with only an FWD drivetrain. The higher SE trim is available in FWD and AWD variants both, while the top-trim GT is available only with the AWD drivetrain variant. The base ES trim rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and gets features like automatic climate control, 60/40-split-folding second-row seats, and heated mirrors. The upgrade to SE trim gets you bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a 6-inch touchscreen display.

We recommend

We recommend going for the SE trim as it offers the best value. You get the option for the AWD variant and a host of other features. Engine and Performance
6.0/10

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is powered by a standard 2.4 L Inline 4 engine. The engine produces a peak power of 166 horsepower and a peak torque of 162 pound-feet. It is mated to a CVT transmission, and the performance is not a strong point of the engine and it is best for a relaxed driving style. It takes 9 seconds to reach 0 to 60 mph, and the quarter-mile run takes a lethargic 17 seconds. You can go for the top GT trim which is powered by a 3-liter V6 engine that produces 224 horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque. You can complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 7.6 seconds with that engine.

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 Touring comes with the most powerful engine in the comparison, and it is also the fastest crossover to reach 0 to 60 mph. The Mazda CX-5 Touring completes the 0 to 60 mph run in 7.8 seconds, while the quarter-mile run takes 16 seconds. The 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium is marginally better than the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander in terms of power figures and acceleration. It completes the 0 to 60 mph run in 8.7 seconds, which is not impressive acceleration by any means.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander offers a pretty decent fuel economy for the segment. It manages to deliver 24 mpg in the city driving conditions, 29 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg of combined fuel economy. The economy can be termed as pretty well considering the AWD drivetrain. There is a slight increase in the fuel economy with the FWD drivetrain variants.

If you go for the 3-liter V6 engine offered with the GT trim, then the fuel economy will fall a bit more. The V6 delivers 20 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg of combined fuel economy. If you combine it with 15.8 gallons of fuel tank, then it rewards you with an impressive range on the highway.

The 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium excels in terms of fuel economy and leaves both the competitors behind. It also comes with the largest fuel tank capacity in the competition, which means it offers the best range for long highway trips. The 2015 Mazda CX-5 Touring and 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander offer similar fuel efficiency and the range is also somewhat similar. You will not see much of a difference in the fuel economy figures of all these crossovers.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2015 Mitsubishi is one of the few cars in the segment that offers three rows of seating. The space in the first and second rows feels adequate for the passengers in terms of headroom, shoulder room, and legroom. The third row feels very cramped, and no adult can sit there. The materials used inside the cabin are of very good quality, and the interior feels premium from the inside. It also gets features like 6 -way manual driver seat adjustment, heated driver and front passenger seats, and 60/40-split-folding second-row seats. The third row also gets a 50/50 split option, which helps the cargo area.

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander offers a very spacious cabin for the front and second-row passengers, while the option for third-row makes it a very practical option in case you need it for the kids. The kids will also not be comfortable in the third-row for long hours, although it can be a good option for short drives. The competition also offers very similar space, but the lack of third-row allows them to provide slightly better legroom. Standout interior features of the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander include:

  • 6 -Way Manual driver Seat Adjustment
  • 4 -Way Manual passenger Seat Adjustment
  • Heated driver and front passenger seats
  • 60/40-split-folding second-row seats
  • 50/50 split-folding third-row seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather upholstery

How intuitive is the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander’s infotainment unit?

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander features a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The graphics of the screen feels okayish and the system supports a host of connectivity options like Bluetooth connectivity, Aux, and USB connectivity. It also comes with the support of SiriusXM satellite radio. The infotainment system could be better, and it lacks many modern features. You get a standard 6-speaker audio system that does the job just fine, but if you want better audio quality, you can upgrade from the SE or GT trim to a 9-speaker Rockford-Fosgate premium sound system. Infotainment features of the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander include:

  • 6.1-inch touchscreen display
  • Bluetooth, Aux, and USB connectivity
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • MMCS Navigation system
  • 9-speaker Rockford-Fosgate premium sound system (available)

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander comes with a dual-chrome lining on both sides of the Mitsubishi logo on the front. It also gets the big auto-on/off headlights at the side of the same chrome lining. The side gets 16-inch steel wheels with the base variant, and with the upper trim, it gets bigger 18-inch alloy wheels. The 18-inch wheels look nice with the stance of the Outlander as it is a big car. The 2015 Outlander looks more like an SUV than a crossover, which is not the case with the competitors.

The overall styling remains very subtle from all angles. It is not the vehicle that will turn your head out on the road. It merges well with the other vehicles and goes silently. The road presence is better than the competitors as it looks like a bigger SUV. There is nothing much to complain about in terms of the overall appearance. The crossover weighs 3,472 lbs and stands 8.5 inches above the ground.

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is the longest car in the comparison here with a length of 183.3 inches. The width remains in the middle at 71.3 inches, while the height is the least in the comparison. The 2015 Mazda CX-5 Touring offers the longest wheelbase in the segment, followed by the Outlander. Both the crossovers get a similar ground clearance, while the 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium gets an even better ground clearance with a slight margin. Standout exterior features of the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander include:

  • 18” alloy wheels
  • Automatic xenon headlights
  • LED taillights
  • Sunroof
  • Keyless entry
  • Rain-sensing wipers

Safety
8.0/10

The NHTSA has rated the Mitsubishi Outlander an overall five out of five stars in their crash test. The IIHS also gave it their ‘Good’ safety rating. It means that the 2015 Mitsubishi is one of the safe crossovers out there in the market. You get standard safety features like antilock disc brakes, hill-start assist, and stability control. You also get front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a driver-side knee airbag. There are also various optional driver assistance features that you can include for even better safety. The standard and optional safety features of the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander include:

  • ABS with EBD
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Forward Collision Mitigation
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Final Verdict

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander will not outperform the competitor in any segment, and there is nothing that it does the best in the segment. The power of the base engine is also not on par with the rivals, but it can be a good choice if you want a budget crossover that is practical and does everything just fine. The addition of the third row is a big plus and is a good option for occasional uses. If performance doesn’t matter for you, you can consider buying the 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander.

I love it, altogether its a fantastic vehicle. The fuel economy is tits money, it's fun to scoot around, jumping lanes not giving a rats patootie. The sound system could be a little better, maybe put a sub in.

              Great gas saving suv.

Pros - ["Back up camera", "Headlights"]

Cons - ["Kind of hard to find parts for at store have to order most.", "The seat belt light goes off instantly and annoyingly over and over in a short period of time. Doesn't even give you 20 seconds."]

The mitsubishi outlander sport se. Is the like upgraded version the normal version doesn't have the heated seats or back uo camera to my knowledge. I've put 30,000 miles on it in 7 or 8 months. And hasn't really given me any problems other than than what driving that much does to a car.
