Overview

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is live proof that you do not always need an SUV while looking for a practical car. It strongly puts the case for sedans and comes out as one of the comfortable and practical luxury sedans. The E-Class received a mid-year refresh in 2021 and the changes to the 2022 model year are not that big. It is still one of the most popular luxury sedans in the global automotive market and the legacy continues even in 2022.

Buying Advice

Both trims of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan get the same list of standard and optional features. The only difference is the engine under the hood of the car. We recommend going for the base trim if you want to be driven in the rear seats. Otherwise, you should get the E450 trim for a more powerful engine. We also recommend going for the optional air suspension for a better ride quality as the standard suspension feels stiffer.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is available in three different body styles that include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. This review is only for the sedan and there will be separate articles for the other body types. The E-Class Sedan starts at an MSRP of $55,300 for the RWD base trim and goes all the way up to $63,050 for the top trim. There are two different powertrain options to choose from. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan competes against the likes of the Audi A6, Jaguar XF, and the BMW 5-Series

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Release Date

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is already released and all the specifications are already available. There are no major changes in the new model year and that means it looks pretty similar to the ongoing model.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan will not actually impress you with its fuel efficiency but it is not bad either. It falls in between the expected fuel economy in the segment. You can expect it to return 20 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg of combined fuel economy. The fuel efficiency is pretty decent for its class. The Merc has offered a 17.7-gallon fuel tank with the E-Class sedan which allows it to deliver a maximum highway range of 496 miles in a full tank.

The Jaguar XF outruns all its rivals in terms of fuel efficiency with quite an evident margin. It also gets the largest fuel tank in its class and the highway range of 644 miles is miles ahead of the other rivals. The Audi A6 comes in second place in terms of highway range as it also manages to keep the car away from the gas station for as long as 560 miles. The BMW 5 Series is the least fuel-efficient sedan here and also offers the shortest highway range of just 450 miles.

Interior
8.8/10

The interior is always the most exciting part of any luxury vehicle and the excitement goes to the next level when it comes to Mercedes. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz comes with a very practical yet luxurious interior design. Anything you touch inside the car feels premium. The door gets wooden inserts on it which also finds their way on the dashboard. There are plenty of soft-touch materials inside the cabin that uplifts the overall opulence of the cabin. The air vents are also designed beautifully with premium quality materials.

The front seats are extremely comfortable with plenty of adjustment options. The visibility is never an issue whether you talk about the front or the rear. The new steering wheel gives the driver complete access to the digital instrument cluster. The controls for the cabin are easy to navigate and use. The rear seat comfort has always been a strength for the E-Class and it has not changed yet. The rear passengers get good space and excellent comfort.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan is not the most spacious sedan in its segment but it is among the most comfortable ones. The Jaguar XF offers the best legroom for both front and rear passengers but the margin is not that big between any of the cars. However, the Jag loses out on the trunk capacity as it gets the smallest trunk capacity in its segment. The Bimmer takes a lead here with the largest trunk capacity in the segment. Standout interior features in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are:

  • 10-way power-adjustable front seats
  • 40-20-40 folding rear seats
  • Power tilt/telescopic adjustable steering wheel
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

What is there to keep you entertained in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class comes with a big 12.3-inch infotainment system housed in the center of the dashboard. It almost seems to join with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Merc has climbed up at the top when it comes to the user interface for their infotainment system in the past few years. The E-Class Sedan’s infotainment runs on an MBUX user interface that is for sure one of the most easy-to-use and intuitive infotainment systems in the automotive industry.

The graphics are sharp and responsive. You can control the infotainment screen via touch responses, or the touchpad that is located on the center console. It also supports voice control when you do not want to take your eyes off the road. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are part of the standard equipment. The standard audio system is an 8-speaker system but you have the option to upgrade to a Burmester stereo system. Standout infotainment features in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are:

  • A 12-3-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • MBUX infotainment system
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Voice control
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 8-speaker audio system

Exterior
8.8/10

The exterior of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan remains pretty familiar to the lineup. There were some subtle changes to the exterior design with the 2021 model year and the same continues to the 2022 model year too. The changes were not that big and it still contains the overall charm of the familiar E-Class design language. It looks pretty similar to the flagship S-Class sedan with a smaller size and wheelbase. Merc has always kept the design subtle and the E-Class does not come with aggressive or sporty looks. It is rather a well-designed sedan that never gets old.

The front gets the same old Mercedes-Benz grille design that we all are familiar with for years now. The center of the grille gets a chrome line going through it joining the Merc logo. The LED headlights and DRLs get a blacked-out effect to match with the black grille. As you move down, it gets a functional cut-out for the brakes at the side with fake vents that are covered by two horizontal lines. The bonnet gets some sharp lines passing in the middle. The design at the side remains pretty familiar while the rear gets new LED taillights.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan is the shortest car in its segment with a slightly longer wheelbase than the Audi A6. The BMW 5-Series is the longest of the lot followed by the Jaguar XF. All the cars in the competition are legendary brands on their own and have their separate fan following. They all follow a pretty familiar design language which helps them distinguish from others and can be easily recognized by their names. Standout exterior features in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • LED Headlights with LED DRLs
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Chrome grille
  • Light tinted glass
  • LED Brakelights

Safety
5.0/10

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class received an impressive 5 out of 5 stars in the crash-test rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has not crash-tested the E-Class for safety. The standard safety features of the E-Class sedan are pretty impressive.

However, most of the advanced driver assistance features with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class are optional. The good news is that all the driver’s aids work great in real-life situations and the best possible rating by the NHTSA clearly shows that. The safety features include in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are:

  • Electronic stability control
  • Traction control
  • Stability control
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Active brake assist
  • Backup camera

Competition
9.0/10

Mercedes-Benz E-Class vs. Audi A6

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Audi A6 are pretty similar in terms of what they offer with different designs and badges. Both these sedans are among the best in the class in terms of luxury and comfort inside the cabin.

The exterior design of the A6 is more sporty while the Merc looks more subtle. It completely depends on which sedan better fulfills your needs.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class vs. Jaguar XF

The Jaguar XF offers a rather sporty drive and the driving dynamics of the XF are way ahead of the E-Class. The E-Class, on the other hand, is more modern between the two with a better list of features and a more luxurious feeling than the Jag.

The E-Class offers a better overall package while the Jaguar XF will appeal more to people who like driving. The fuel efficiency is also better in the Jag.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class vs. BMW 5-Series

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5-Series are both very different cars in the same segment and coming from the same country of origin.

The E-Class is more focused on people who want better comfort while the 5-Series is more inclined towards driving dynamics and better driver engagement. It completely depends on your personal preferences which one you like better.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class still retains the charm and subtleness it has always offered. It offers one of the best experiences to all the passengers inside its cabin. Safety is also among the best in its class. A Premium cabin makes it a great car to spend long hours without getting bored of the design. The simple exterior design with a comfortable driving experience makes it a great choice for the segment.
