Overview

Audi has distinguished itself as an established luxury vehicle maker and has also given some brilliant performance cars such as the Audi 5000 and the Audi R8. The brand also has an extensive presence in motorsports too, especially in endurance racing events. Among the tasteful lineup of luxury sedans from the brand, the A6 is a solid contender for its class and successfully carries on the lineage of its predecessor, the Audi 100. Currently, in its 5th-generation model, the sedan received a major facelift back in 2019.

Buying Advice

Considering the steep base price of the car, we would recommend the base Premium trim. However, the mid-level Premium Plus brings out the best bang for the buck with the addition of some excellent luxurious and advanced safety features.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Audi A6 sedan will come with some updates and improvements that include an upgraded driver’s instrument panel, a wireless connectivity option for Android Auto, and additional improvements to the existing infotainment system. Powering the sedan will be two powertrains, a standard turbocharged I-4, and an optional turbocharged V6. In terms of safety, the sedan gets the important ADAS techs as standard while more features are added through optional packages. The price for the 2022 A6 will commence from $56,995 and will attract rivals such as the BMW 5 Series, the Mercedes-Benz E Class, and the Volvo S90.

Features
9.0/10

The 2022 Audi A6 sedan is offered in a total of three trim levels, Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. All the trims get the base 2.0-liter turbo four-pot as standard while the optional turbocharged V6 is available in all three trims as well. The price for the base Premium trim commences from $56,995 and gets you a tech-heavy package with features like tri-zone automatic climate control, a dual-screen touchscreen setup for the infotainment and other vehicle controls, heated and power-adjustable front seats, and a big 12.3-inch digital driver's instrument panel or Virtual Cockpit Plus as Audi calls it. The mid-level Premium Plus gets some more features such as heating for the steering wheel, a wireless device charging pad, blind-spot intervention, adaptive cruise control, and an upgraded 16-speaker audio setup among a few others. The top-of-the-line Prestige tops it off with some luxurious techs such as quad-zone automatic climate control, multi-color ambient interior lighting, signature LED matrix headlamps from Audi, power-operated and soft-closing doors, and a power-operated trunk lid.

Release Date

The 2022 Audi A6 has been released and is available for purchase through the brand's official website and authorized dealerships.

Fuel Economy
7.6/10

It is hard to associate good fuel economy figures with luxury cars but with the recent trend of such cars getting downsized engines, the fuel economy part has improved. The 2022 Audi A6, according to the EPA, will return an average city mileage of 23mpg while the highway drives will see the number rising to 31mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 26mpg as well. On the driving range part, the sedan doesn’t disappoint either with its 19-gallon gas tank and can cover over 400 miles inside city limits on a single tank-full of gasoline.

The Mercedes-Benz E Class has marginally lower EPA ratings than the A6 but disappoints in terms of driving range numbers due to its smaller 17.4-gallon gasoline storage. The BMW 5 Series is the most fuel-efficient sedan here with a similar city mileage rating to the A6 and the highest EPA ratings in both highway and combined numbers. The Volvo S90 has the least EPA rating in terms of city mileage but its small 15.9-gallon gas tank results in some subpar driving range figures.

Interior
7.6/10

The 2022 Audi A6’s interior is one of the best in the class, period. For starters, the sedan gets premium leather upholstery right from the base trim onwards along with several creature comforts such as tri-zone automatic climate control, and heating for the front seats. Some of the optional features that can be added through the available packages include a heated steering wheel, quad-zone automatic climate control, heating for the rear seats, ambient interior lighting with multi-color LEDs, and massaging function for the front seats among several other features. Coming to the space, there is no dearth of headroom, legroom, and shoulder room for both the front and rear seats, and the rear seats offer one of the softest cushioning in the class as well. The dashboard gets an advanced design with a multi-screen layout. The driver gets a fully digital instrument cluster display while there are two screens in the middle, one for the infotainment display, and another for replacing the physical controls on the center stack. The trunk space is small-ish for a luxury sedan with only 13.7 cu-ft of space on offer.

The Mercedes-Benz E Class’s cabin takes a lot of inspiration from the pricier S Class, especially that screen-heavy dashboard and retro-modern steering wheel design. In terms of design, the E Class’s cabin looks slightly more pleasing than the A6’s interior aesthetically but has similar space on offer for both the front and rear occupants. The BMW 5 Series has a simpler cabin as compared to the interiors of both the A6 and the E Class but gets a more driver-oriented layout. In terms of luxury appointments and features, it is similar to the rivals here and offers plenty of space for all the occupants as well. The Volvo S90 exudes a distinct Swedish elegance and takes a lot of design cues from the XC90 SUV. Moreover, the S90 has the biggest trunk here too.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2022 Audi A6 include:

  • Power-operated and heated front seats with ventilation
  • Ambient interior lighting with multi-color LEDs
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Heated rear seats
  • Window shades for rear and rear side windows
  • Leather upholstery

How intuitive is the 2022 Audi A6’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system layout of the 2022 Audi A6 is a rather interesting one with two displays stacked in line. The upper display is a bigger 10.1-inch touchscreen unit that handles the infotainment duties such as showing the connectivity details, music track details along with navigation, and reverse camera view as well. The lower display is slightly smaller at 8.6 inches and takes care of the secondary controls of the car such as media controls and climate controls that replace several physical buttons in the process. As standard, the system offers features such as wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with navigation, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. Some of the optional features include a premium 16-speaker or 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio setup, for a rich and surround audio experience.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2022 Audi A6 include:

  • 10.1-inch and 8.6-inch dual touchscreen displays
  • Wireless support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Bluetooth
  • Satellite radio
  • Navigation
  • 16/19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system

Exterior
7.6/10

Audi vehicles are known for their aggressive, even outlandish in some cases, exterior designs but the 2022 A6 feels a bit understated for that matter. The current model of the sedan looks more like a slightly smaller version of the pre-facelift model of the A8 but the low-slung appearance of the sedan gives it the required premium feel. Both the headlamps and the tail lamps are all LED units while the headlamps get the latest Matrix HD LEDs on the top-end Prestige trim. Other than these, the sedan gets 19-inch wheels as standard across the trim levels while the tasteful Black Optic Sport Package gets unique-designed 20-inch wheels. The sedan is on the wider side and maneuvering it in tight spaces might pose some problems at first. The top-end trim also gets fantastic power-operated soft-closing doors, a feature that used to be a standard one in Rolls Royce cars.

The Mercedes-Benz E Class gets its front-end design inspired by the AMG GT supercar, as is the case with several other cars from the brand as well. It gives the sedan a distinct aggressive appeal but, at the same time, the long wheelbase and the flowing design retain the original elegance of the car. It is slightly narrower than the A6 on paper but isn’t much visible to the naked eye. The BMW 5 Series has been spared for now from getting the big and latest kidney grille from the brand. As a result, the sedan looks sleek and sporty from the front but we miss the circular LED DRL rings, honestly. The Volvo S90 looks like a sleeker sibling of the bigger XC90 due to the nearly-similar front fascia design. On paper, the S90 is among the biggest ones here and it is quite evident in the flesh too when compared to the rivals side-by-side.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 19-inch wheels
  • LED exterior lighting
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Power-operated trunk
  • Upgraded HD matrix headlights(optional)
  • Power soft-closing doors

Safety
9.4/10

In terms of safety, mainstream German cars never made a compromise and the 2022 Audi A6 doesn’t either. The sedan bagged top-notch safety scores from both the NHTSA and IIHS, with a 5-star rating from the former and the Top Safety Pick + award from the latter. The sedan houses several advanced driver assistance techs as standard which are Automatic emergency braking, Lane departure warning, Rear cross-traffic alert, Blind-spot intervention, Adaptive cruise control, and Lane Keeping System.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Front cross-traffic alert
  • Lane keeping system
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Surround-view camera system
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Blind-spot intervention

Competition
7.0/10

2022 Audi A6 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz E Class

The Mercedes-Benz E Class is an old competitor of the A6 sedan and has been through a proper evolution over the course of time as well. In its current form, the E Class is slightly better than the A6 in some aspects such as the exterior and interior design. However, the A6 holds an edge over the E Class in terms of performance, fuel economy, and athleticism. In terms of safety though, the E Class gets slightly more standard advanced driver assistance techs than the A6 in its base trim.

2022 Audi A6 vs 2022 BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series sedan has been around for quite a long time now, competing against the A6 since the beginning. The 5 Series is a better option than the A6 if you compare them in terms of fuel economy and exterior appeal. Moreover, the Beemer has a bigger trunk than the A6 too, making it a more practical choice. On the inside, the 5 Series might look like a simpler one, but it is less baffling and more driver-oriented than the tech-heavy and screen-heavy interior of the A6.

2022 Audi A6 vs 2022 Volvo S90

The Volvo S90 appeals to a specific set of shoppers who want something different and more elegant than the mainstream German sedans in this category. The S90 has an opulent cabin with a simple yet user-friendly layout and betters the A6 in terms of trunk space as well. Despite getting an unconventional twin-charged engine setup to boost fuel economy, it disappoints slightly in that area. Overall, the S90 poses a solid alternative to the A6 if you can live with the slightly lower mpg ratings.

Final Verdict

The Audi A6 is a commendable contender in the segment despite facing a tough time from similarly-equipped and similarly-luxurious German sedans. The A6 doesn’t impress completely if you look at it through individual aspects but is a great executive sedan as a whole. In its top-end trims, features such as the signature Matrix LED headlamps and the Rolls Royce-style soft closing doors, make it a true luxury car that can be used as a daily driver too. However, you might want to take a look at the 5 Series or the S90 if you’re not a fan of the tech-heavy cabin and the typical Audi design on the outside.

              I love my car

Pros - ["The interior is beautiful", "The speed is so satisfying"]

Cons - ["The answer is rates are a little too high.", "The parts are a little too expensive."]

I love my car. He's the perfect vehicle I ever imagined. The only thing that I dislike is the interest rate and the expensive auto parts. But I will recommend others to make this purchase. It was one of my best purchases I've made.
