As a luxury midsize sports coupe, the McLaren is beyond doubt an absolute choice for those who’re looking for a luxury 2-seater coupe. Avaialbel with a market price of $299,150, the 720S is known for selling 765 units all over the world in 2021. Since the vehicle is not a daily-use car its popularity is accepted by a limited class of buyers.

Yet, the popularity of the vehicle seems fairly high than its immediate competitors like the Lamborghini Aventador S followed by the Ferrari 812 Superfast and Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, all of these rival cars of 720s had hard time to maibntain the pace while competing with 720s.

Some critics believed that the 720s would have outmatched its rivals in the upcoming years too, if the car’s reliablity wouldn’t have been an issue at all. The car’s loyalty was put under question due to its poor fuel economy, inferior power distribution in the rear wheels frequently triggering chances of causing accidents. Such challenges make the car difficult to drive sometimes on the road, except on track.

We’ll be discussing some of these majorly found issues within McLaren that raised query about its market publicity.

Though the NHTSA website has no complaints and problems registered about MacLaren however, efforts have been made to collect data about some general issues and troubles faced by the McLaren 720s owners. They have been shared below,

Mechanical Problems

  • Steering control requires improvement

Some users have found themselves to be catapulting while the car is at high speed making it impossible for them to control the steering wheel. Such inconvenience might occur due to uneven balance distribution while the car takes a sharp turn on the roads. Instances like this may affect the driver’s maneuverability while steering the vehicle on top speed, therefore needs to be resolved.

  • Traction problems

Some users have found the RWD drivetrain of McLaren is known for causing serious traction issues while driving it on road. Such issues need to be addressed and instead of distributing power in the rear wheels, a 4WD drivetrain would be considered a superior option.

  • Braking issues

Brake-related issues are one of the serious concerns in McLaren coupes. Some users have found the faulty banjo bolts affected the normal flow of hydraulic fluid into the calipers. According to the NHTSA, back in 2019, such issues were known to affect around 19 McLaren car models.

Exterior Problems

  • Blindspots

The warning and indicator lights from other drivers can easily be ignored while driving the 720S as there are blindspots in the vehicle, which can be a reason for collision while the car is in motion. Being a sports coupe, ignoring a blind spot may cause damage due to an unexpected collision with any object or vehicle, leaving scratch marks or causing damage to the exterior car body.

Structural Problems

  • Faulty construction

A number of users have reported that a faulty foam pad designed below the fuel tank often soaks furthermore causing damage to the fuel tank. The wet fuel tank remaining exposed to the water-absorbed foam pad might lead to corrosion, leakage, or worse it may even catch fire. The manufacturers must reconsider the design of the fuel tank and rework upon construction. However, McLaren confirmed about looking into the issue and getting the foam pad replaced with a hydrophobic pad to avoid such water corrosion further. Apart from that, some users found the aerodynamic semi-oval ‘spaceship’ look-alike McLaren needs a thorough rework to make it look more acceptable amongst sport coupe lovers.

Such issues have been reported about the car because of limiting the headroom and shoulder room space for the drivers and the passengers seated in the front row making it quite difficult and uncomfortable for those seated in the vehicle.

2021 McLaren Recalls

The NHTSA website has not registered any recall for the McLaren 720S yet.

Should you Buy a 2021 McLaren Coupe?

Honestly, McLaren is one of the most reliable cars available on the planet for its unique get-up look and popularity. However, the 2021 McLaren 720S would have been more reliable if the body structure of the vehicle could be improved from a semi-oval shape and efforts were made to make it run conveniently on the road. It would be appreciated if the vehicle can run conveniently on road just as it can run on track.

Despite these issues, buying a used McLaren is always going to be a good decision as it packs a considerable amount of reliability that is supported by the fact that there have been 0 complaints and recalls registered on the NHTSA website.

So, that’s why if someone is planning to buy a used model of 720s, we would suggest them to examine the vehicle first. If they see the car does not have any of those issues or problems that the respective owners have complained earlier, we would never ask you to reconsider your buying decision, if the resale pricetag suits your budget.
