Performance vehicles aren’t generally associated with reliability and user-friendly attributes. However, it is a major factor that brands such as McLaren try to impart in their vehicles. This definitely explains why NHTSA has just 2 recalls on the car with 0 complaints registered. Although this might suggest the 720S to be one of the more reliable picks for a performance vehicle, user forums have revealed that the 720S does carry a couple of common manufacturing and quality issue including paint chips on the fender due to the door coming in contact while opening them.

An issue like this makes a huge difference for a car that costs a 6-figure price tag, making way for rivals like the Ferrari 812 Superfast, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, and the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ to take lead. The 2020 McLaren 720S is not without its issues and the Youtube video from "Busterburg" showcases the issues faced in his time owning the 720S. Check out his video below and read ahead to find out if it's worth investing your money in.

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine – The users complained that the McLaren 720S had a rattling noise coming from the bay on the rear section of the car and it was described as something would fall off the car. Upon close inspection, the users found a couple of missing and loose screws that resulted in loose and free-standing brackets, which caused the rattle. The car was taken to a dealership where new screws were installed and this was said to be a common issue among the 720S owners.

Structural Problems

  • Doors – The 720S comes with fancy butterfly doors but the user's have been complaining about the poor quality and manufacturing flaws that the doors have. Users stated that when the door is swung open, it comes in contact with the wheel arches and this can chip the paint over time. The dealers were aware of this issue and there aren’t any available solutions for the issue apart from being cautious while opening the door.

Vehicle May Pull To One Side During Braking

The holes in the brake assembly banjo bolt that deliver braking fluid to the caliper may be missing, which would result in the vehicle's brakes failing on one corner. The probability of a collision can be increased if one corner of the vehicle experiences brake failure.

Dealers will check the banjo bolt and replace it for free if necessary. On September 1, 2021, owner letters were sent out.

Foam Pad May Retain Moisture and Corrode Fuel Tank

Under the fuel tank, the Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) foam pad may collect moisture, deteriorate the fuel tank, and perhaps result in a fuel leak. A fuel leak with an ignite source nearby increases the likelihood of a fire.

Dealers will take the NVH foam pad out of the car and check the gasoline tank once McLaren notifies owners. If corrosion is discovered in the gasoline tank, it will be replaced. There will be no fees for the repairs.

Should you buy the 2020 McLaren 720S?

For anyone taking a look at the 2020 McLaren 720S report on NHTSA, the car would seem like a problem-free vehicle and although that is true to a certain extent, there are issues that this coupe comes with. Although the 720S is a mechanically sound vehicle, showing no signs of flaws with its powertrain, certain design and manufacturing issues act as a backlash for this particular model. The door touching the body panel when open is a flaw that has no fix and users are advised to open the doors carefully. The 720S also has complaints stating the screws in its engine bay loosen over time and this is a key aspect to look for when buying a used vehicle. The 2020 720S has also proved to hold its value well with a very minimal price drop as it currently sells for a very close price to what it was originally listed by the manufacturer. We would not recommend the Ferrari as it's much more expensive to own and maintain while the Lamborghini tends to have constant gearbox and clutch issues, requiring frequent touch from the mechanics. Hence, McLaren would be our pick from this highly competitive segment.
