Overview

Out from the strict performance-oriented philosophy, McLaren has finally launched the GT Coupe after a long waiting period. The 2020 McLaren GT Coupe stands out from the other McLarens due to its relatively roomier cargo area and daily driver characteristics. Still, the coupe is built to go fast. With the price starting at $215,500, the GT Coupe is one of the most expensive rides you can buy in the segment. Based on the platform that also underpins the 720S, it is a much more luxurious and comfortable grand tourer that is made for a plusher drive.

Buying Advice

As the McLaren GT Coupe is available for only one trim, there is no trim lineup to choose from. However, there is no dearth of optional extras, and you can really personalize the GT to suit your taste. A few of the optional packages which enhance the experience of the coupe are MSO Gloss Carbon Fiber Exterior Pack - $19,500, MSO Black Pack - $5,500, and MSO Bright Pack - $5,500.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Powered by a 612-hp 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine that is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the GT Coupe is capable of going from zero to 60 mph in about 3.1 seconds. As standard, it gets features such as a 7.0-inch portrait-style touchscreen, Full Leatherette Headliner, Integrated Navigation System with Voice Activation, Remote Keyless Entry with Integrated Key Transmitter, and an electrochromic roof with five shades of tint. The McLaren GT Coupe goes after rivals such as the Aston Martin DB11, Bentley Continental GT, and the Ferrari Roma.

Features

Starting at the MSRP of $215,500, the McLaren GT Coupe is available in just one trim. Although the car does come with a lot of optional extras, which makes it more costly. As for the basic features, the coupe comes with a few driver assistance features which are needed for everyday use. It comes with a twin-turbo V8 engine, interiors featuring Nappa leather seats, 21-inch aluminum wheels, and a leather steering wheel as standard.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

In these performance-oriented cars, fuel economy is drastically affected, and that is normal due to the high-performing engines that lie underneath making immense power. Similarly, with the McLaren GT, the fuel economy is decent if compared with what the competition has to offer. With a city mileage of 15 MPG, 22 MPG on the highways, and 18 MPG combined, coupled with a 19-gallon fuel tank, the coupe delivers a decent range. It delivers 323 miles per full tank which is decent, but the tank capacity could have been bigger like the competition.

The Aston Martin offers the best-in-class miles per gallon figures and a very balanced range which will drag many of the consumers to its way, but the McLaren and the Ferrari are not far behind. Despite producing similar power output, the coupes did not fail to deliver impressive mileage figures, but the small tank capacity could be a problem and result in frequent fuel stops. The Bentley offers the lowest fuel economy in the competition, but for its larger fuel tank capacity, the range is similar to the competition.

Interior
8.0/10

British car manufacturers have a knack for interior opulence, and McLaren being one of them, offers one of the classier cabins. It comes with a healthy list of luxury equipment and comfortable seating which contributes to the overall ride quality. Although the cabin offers a seating capacity of 2, the comfort is uplifted from the more expensive and performance-based McLarens. As you step inside the cabin, you will notice the beautifully designed dashboard with a nice contrast of stitched leather and a few bits of carbon fiber sprinkled all over the cabin. The steering wheel feels sporty to hold, wrapped in leather, and has cruise control and front instrument cluster control buttons on the sides.

Talking about the seats, they are covered in Nappa leather, offering superb cushioning and have multi-level adjustability. However, the seats can only be adjusted manually, and power-adjustability is an optional extra. Both the seats have a good amount of room for your head and legs, but the exact dimensions are not available at the moment. In terms of practicality, the cabin offers 14.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity, which is a plus point and resembles the Grand Tourer's nature.

The McLaren is the only coupe offering a seating capacity of up to 2 people, which is less than what the competition has to offer, but the rear row spaciousness is not ample on either of them. Nevertheless, as the only two-seater of the competition, it provides spacious seating and offers the most cargo capacity, followed by the Ferrari. However, it's the Aston Martin and the Bentley that offer plush and feature-packed interiors. A few of the interior characteristics which are worth mentioning are as follows:

  • Leather steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustability
  • Nappa leather seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Keyless ignition
  • Cruise control
  • Ambient LED lighting
  • Rearview camera

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The infotainment system on the coupe sports decent features and houses a 7.0-inch touchscreen display at the center. The display offers good visibility and is very sensitive to touch and shows no jitters in everyday use.

However, the display is smaller and is not the best when compared to rivals like the Bentley but does the job quite well. The infotainment system is backed up by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which makes connectivity seamless. A few of the important infotainment features are as follows:

  • 7.0-inch touchscreen display
  • 4-speaker audio system
  • Satellite radio
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Auxiliary input for audio
  • USB connectivity

Exterior
9.9/10

The 2020 McLaren GT Coupe undoubtedly looks sharp and carries on with the core McLaren DNA through it. The front sports sharp all-LED headlights and DRLs with a frunk that can store your luggage. The sides have a lot of cuts and shapes to enhance aerodynamics along with frameless doors. The roof of the coupe has a nice teardrop shape to help in further aerodynamics. The rear houses the sleek and sharp LED taillights with the twin-exhaust tips on the sides.

The coupe sits on 21-inch 15 spoke aluminum alloy wheels. The dimensions of the GT are more compact than what the competition has to offer with a shorter length and wheelbase but a wider body and taller height. These factors also enhance the overall handling of the car. Also, due to the use of carbon fiber parts, the curb weight is just 3,384 pounds, the lightest in its segment.

Among all four cars, the McLaren is the lightest and the most compact car. The Ferrari, on the other hand, is the bigger option with an increased wheelbase. The Aston Martin and Bentley share similar dimensions, but the latter weighs a lot more than the competition. The Ferrari and the McLaren certainly turn more heads than any other car in this comparison. A few of the standout exterior features of the GT are:

  • 21-inch 15 spoke aluminum alloy wheels
  • Sports exhaust (Optional)
  • MSO electrochromic panoramic roof
  • MSO painted key
  • Heated mirrors
  • Carbon fiber parts
  • Carbon-ceramic brakes

Safety
8.0/10

We don’t have the safety ratings as these are not mass-produced and come under the category of luxury. But, given the reputation of the company, the GT should be safe on roads. The chassis and the body are well built, supporting the car if it undergoes any kind of crash. However, in terms of the safety features, it lacks a lot of them especially found on the cars in the competition. However, a handful of them are available, and they are as follows:

  • Engine immobilizer
  • 4-wheel ABS with ventilated disc brakes
  • Emergency brake assist
  • Stability control
  • Dusk-sensing headlamps
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Adaptive headlamps

Competition
8.0/10

2020 McLaren GT Coupe vs 2020 Aston Martin DB11 Coupe

Both McLaren and Aston Martin offer the best features for the price. That being said, the performance aspects of the McLaren are better in terms of engine power than the latter car. It arguably looks the best out of all the cars and offers a plusher interior and more overall features. However, the GT Coupe costs a lot more than the DB11 Coupe which can attract many customers towards the Aston Martin.

2020 McLaren GT Coupe vs 2020 Bentley Continental GT Coupe

Bentley, being one of the most luxurious car making companies, offers far better interiors and luxury with a power-packed engine. Combined with a healthy features list and an opulent cabin, the Bentley Continental GT Coupe is quite a sensible option. However, McLaren, on the other hand, is sportier and has better performance but comes at a slightly higher price tag. In the end, it depends on personal preferences.

2020 McLaren GT Coupe vs 2020 Ferrari Roma Coupe

The Ferrari Roma Coupe is the only Italian rival against the British dominators and is the costliest among the competition. The McLaren and Ferrari share almost the same engine performance, but the latter car is superior in terms of efficiency and also comes with an opulent cabin with a lot of standard features which the British counterpart possesses but only after spending a lot of extra cash.

Final Verdict

The 2020 McLaren GT Coupe is a well-balanced coupe, especially for the enthusiasts who want a fast car without compromising much on the daily-driver characteristics. It is a complete package with punchy performance, hypercar looks, good comfort, and practicality. However, there are a few downsides, including the absence of a lot of safety features, fewer infotainment features, limited electronics for the price, and additional extras that are too costly. Apart from these, if you want a fast and relatively comfortable tourer, then the GT will not disappoint you.
