Overview

The British automaker McLaren is known for its lightweight carbon fiber supercars. In 2018, McLaren took its entry-level sports series up a notch with the introduction of the all-new 600LT. Mostly inspired by the 570S, the 600LT is a more stylish, aerodynamic, and track-focused version of the car. Later in 2019, we received the convertible model named 600LT Spider.

McLaren has played a smart game by introducing the 600LT as it is a heavily modified version of the 570S. With similar design cues, McLaren has made certain changes by offering a more aerodynamic design, carbon fiber elements, and up to 30hp more power than the McLaren 570S. As the name suggests, the 600LT is 2.1 inches longer than the 570S.

Buying Advice

As the McLaren 600LT Spider is available in a single trim option. It is a well-packed supercar with immense power under the hood and a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio. The carbon fiber monocoque is the lightest structure in the segment.

The standard package includes premium interiors with simulated leather upholstery, carbon fiber, and aluminum accents. The exterior is all worked up with carbon fiber, advanced aerodynamics, astonishing design. All of this for a hefty price of $256,500.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Being a limited supercar, the McLaren 600LT Spider gets a price tag of $256,500. With the carbon monocoque, the 600LT has an amazing power to weight ratio. The 600LT Spider offers tons of packages for you. It will compete with the Lamborghini Huracan EVO Spyder, Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster, and the Audi R8 Spyder V10 Performance.

Features

The package is not Limited as you get various optional packages from better luxury, performance, carbon fiber, and other accessories. Fuel Economy
3.5/10

The V8-powered cars have no regard for fuel economy. That's why brands equip them with massive fuel tanks. The Twin-Turbo V8 on the McLaren 600LT offers 15 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on the highway, and a combined 18 MPG.

For a 592 hp supercar, this kind of economy is really surprising. The main reason behind its amazing economy is its lightweight carbon-fiber structure. A 19.0-gallon fuel tank allows it to have a highway range of 418 miles.

Supercars don't generally go beyond 400 miles of range. The 2859 lbs weighing McLaren 600LT is so light and aerodynamic that it delivers an impressive fuel economy in the whole segment. Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster is the closest contender to the 600LT with its good enough economy but it offers more range due to its high voluminous tank that measures 19.8 gallons.

Interior
9.9/10

For the interior of the 2020 600LT, McLaren has taken ideas from both the 570S and the Senna. With simple ergonomics, McLaren has eliminated a whole lot of weight from the interior. The outcome is limited equipment and less to no unnecessary spaces. All the 600LT has is a raw carbon fiber shell that is focused on an engaging drive.

The sliding dash is wrapped in lightweight Alcantara and Suede leather trim. The carbon fiber gives the cockpit a sporty and appealing appearance. The flat bottom sports steering wheel also gets Alcantara trim and a 12 o'clock mark. It is paired with carbon fiber paddle shifters. The all-digital gauge cluster gets a speedometer, a trip computer, and a center RPM meter.

Being a 2 seater sports car, the 2020 McLaren 600LT Spider gets dual front racing seats which can be traded as lightweight carbon fiber seats, similar to the ones we saw on the McLaren Senna. The limited scope of convenience is provided by a dual-zone air-conditioning (which is optional) tilt and telescoping steering wheel, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and a retractable hardtop.

With space for two, the front seats on a McLaren 600LT are offered not just for comfort but to keep in your spot safely while hyper riding. The rivals use the same strategy, however in a simpler fashion with limited carbon fiber. McLaren has even eliminated the floor mats, air-conditioning, navigation and shed the weight.

As it is a convertible, you have unlimited headroom, a decent shoulder room, and great legroom. There are interior color options such as Jet black and Carbon black which can be paired with Blue, Red, Gray, and Graphite color options. You can avail of interior packages such as Carbon fiber interior package and luxury package.

Other than that, the sharp edges of the lightweight 600LT won't offer much space. You are left with just 5.3 cubic feet of trunk space. For a mid-engined car, the cargo isn't the trunk, it is under the hood at the front, thus limited space. As compared with the rivals, the 600LT has a bigger trunk than the Huracan here the R8 has much better trunk space. Some Highlight Interior features:

  • Track focused cockpit
  • Raw carbon fiber interior shell
  • Lightweight carbon fiber seats
  • Alcantara and Suede trim
  • Retractable hardtop
  • Flat-bottom steering wheel
  • All digital gauge cluster

What's there to keep you entertained?

There's a center-mounted infotainment screen powered by McLaren IRIS. It is a 7-inch touch screen integrated with a navigation system and a vertical interface. The infotainment isn't as promising as it seems. Yet you get certain features to keep you connected. You can choose between SiriusXM radio or DAB radio. Moreover, you have smart device integration, Bluetooth audio and connectivity, integrated apps, voice activation, USB connectivity, and a WiFi hotspot as well.

The infotainment is paired with a McLaren 4 speakers audio system with McLaren Track Telemetry. You can avail the surround sound system that includes 12 premium speakers by Bowers and Wilkins. A satellite navigation system can be your travel assistance. Highlighting infotainment features in the 2020 McLaren 600LT Spider are:

  • McLaren IRIS
  • SiriusXM or DAB radio
  • Bluetooth audio and connectivity
  • Integrated apps
  • WiFi hotspot
  • Satellite navigation system
  • 12 speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system

Exterior
9.9/10

McLaren cars offer the most practical yet eye-popping exterior design in the whole industry. The result produces cutting-edge accuracy in the aerodynamics of the car that serves its main purpose of track performance. The monocoque structure is crafted with carbon fiber that keeps the 600LT light and crisp to deliver exhilarating performance.

To make it distinct from the 570S, McLaren has used much better aerodynamics that adds to both looks and aero management of the car. The carbon fiber components start with the front where you have an aggressive front splitter, stylish side sills, and extended side intakes mounted on the doors. The full LED headlamps are a signature touch by McLaren.

At the rear, there's an engine bay window glass that displays the heart underneath that comes to life with colored LED lights. McLaren nailed it by placing the massive dual-tip exhausts (made out of lightweight titanium) atop the tail whose exit angle is optimized to work with the carbon fiber wing spoiler to ensure better cooling, revving, and performance.

The rear diffusers cover the whole back to the signature LED tail lamps. As it is all about weight, we have lightweight front 19" and rear 20" alloy wheels. Wrapped around them is the teamwork of McLaren and Pirelli, a set of performance P Zero Trofeo R tires that are available with the sport series for the first-ever on the 600LT.

There's no competition from McLaren in terms of making the lightest sports cars in the whole segment. As McLaren is the only brand that uses carbon fiber structures, the 600LT only weighs 2859 lbs even after having the biggest bodily dimensions. The Huracan EVO weighs around 500 lbs more than the 600 LT.

The AMG GT R Roadster and R8 Performance Spyder add a lot more weight. In terms of length, width, and even height, the McLaren 600LT is the biggest of all. However, it is a low rider with its 3.2-inch ground clearance. As it rides on a wide wheelbase, the balance and handling are some of the best. Some of the highlight Exterior features:

  • Optimized aerodynamics
  • Carbon fiber components
  • LED headlamps
  • Engine bay window glass
  • Lightweight top-mounted titanium exhausts
  • Extended side intakes
  • Carbon fiber spoiler
  • Signature LED tail lamps
  • Massive rear diffuser

Safety
9.0/10

Yes, McLaren makes the lightest supercars in the whole industry. But it doesn't mean they aren't safe. The carbon fiber might not contribute much to the weight but does add immense strength to the structure. With the Monocell II, the 2020 McLaren 600LT Spider gets rigidity, handling, agility as well as comfort. You can count on the structure for your safety.

With a lot of reduction of weight, McLaren has also reduced the number of safety and driver assistance features with the 2020 600LT. The safety is limited to the dual front, side, and knee airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, tire pressure warning, roll stability control, front and rear parking sensors, and a backup camera that's good enough for track racing. Highlighting Safety features:

  • Carbon fiber monocell II
  • Roll stability control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Self-Leveling Headlights
  • Advanced airbags

2020 McLaren 600LT Spider vs 2020 Lamborghini Huracan EVO Spyder

The McLaren 600LT is a whole new level of track performance. With its turbocharged V8, the 600LT is capable of doing wonders. The lightweight carbon-fiber structure brings alive the full potential of the car with better handling and agility. The Lamborghini Huracan EVO is the closest rival to the 600LT with better power output from its NA engine. However, this McLaren can outperform the Huracan with its lightweight and agile chassis. Regardless, at similar prices, both of these options can make enthusiasts equally excited.

2020 McLaren 600LT Spider vs 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster

The recently debuted McLaren 600LT Spider is competing with Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R Roadster, a phenomenal performance car. Both the cars offer similar packages where the 600LT is ahead with its carbon fiber construction and minimal instrumentation to devote its attention towards the track. Thus it can take down the AMG GT R with its lighter weight and that too with a huge margin.

2020 McLaren 600LT Spider vs 2020 Audi R8 V10 Performance Spyder

The McLaren 600LT makes good use of technology in delivering an unmatchable performance with optimum accuracy by keeping the weight figures low and allowing the performance figures to rise. As the inspiration is taken from high-end siblings, the 600LT rides on a whole other level. On the other hand, we have the Audi R8 V10 Performance that is one of the best entry-level supercars with its comfort, handling, performance, convenience, and all for $208,100. At a higher price, the 600LT adds better performance and exclusivity.

Final Verdict

McLaren did a great job with the 600LT as it bridges the gap between its Sport series and the Ultimate series cars. The talk of the town is its lightweight carbon fiber structure which is lighter than any other car in the segment. The weight reduction process may not suit everybody as McLaren has taken out the basic convenience features.

The unmistakable performance of the McLaren 600LT will make your thrill shoot out of the convertible top as there is not a single aspect that McLaren hasn't thought of. The design looks heavenly with all that carbon fiber treatment that adds up to the aerodynamics of the car. It looks like McLaren has put steroids on the 570S to transform it into an untamable beast.

The lightweight philosophy is not limited to the structure as the naked carbon fiber shell cabin is a significant contributor to the 600LT's acceleration. With satisfactory comfort levels and a track-focused cockpit, you will be seeing the true colors of McLaren that screams performance. For a price of $256,500, the 2020 McLaren 600LT Spider is a fascinating piece of engineering.
