Overview

The 2021 Mclaren GT makes for an excellent contender in the Sports car segment. The Mclaren GT has an MSRP of $200,000 competing directly with the Porsche 911 Turbo S, the Aston Martin DB11 and the Audi R8 Coupe. The Mclaren GT is equipped with a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 with 612 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque and takes just 2.9 seconds to sprint from 0 to 60 MPH. The Mclaren GT maintains a combined fuel economy of 18 MPG. The Mclaren offers the GT in 35 paint colors with Papaya Orange Spark being a particular favorite of ours.

Buying Advice

The most head-scratching car on the planet, the 2021 Mclaren GT is rather confused as to what it wants to be. Unlike other Mclarens there is enough space for 2 wallets instead of just 1 . While the performance is still astonishingly good, the rivals especially Corvette offer spades of improvement in every direction. Making Mclaren GT very hard to recommend. Thanks to Mclaren’s insane depreciation, Buyers will find value and largely similar performance in a used Mclaren 570 GT coupe.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The capable twin-turbo V8 under the hood of the 2021 McLaren GT promises the best-in-class power delivery. The vehicle can handle the twisties with ease, thanks to the central-mounted engine that aids proper weight distribution. The 2021 McLaren GT carries an MSRP of $210,000 and is essentially a carryover model of the 2020 version. It offers stiff competition to the Aston Martin DB11, Bentley Continental GT, and Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe, cars that have carved a niche for themselves in the market with their versatility.

Features

Like any other supercar in this segment, the 2021 McLaren GT Coupe is also offered as a standalone trim. However, customers do get an option to further customize the car via optional packages by paying extra. While it gets priced at $210,000, the MSRP shoots up quickly as one opts for the available packages.

The single trim is efficiently equipped for the price. It gets LED Headlights with auto-leveling, rain and light sensors, and sequential LED indicators. The vehicle gets a lot of premium features including dihedral doors, heated door mirrors with dipping reverse, LED tail lights, sizable exhaust tailpipes, a large rear diffuser, and so on. The interior of the car features leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a 7” touchscreen infotainment system with connectivity.

Which Trim should you buy?

Offered as a standalone trim, you don't have much choice here with the trim levels. However, one should be very careful while customizing this McLaren. Options can quickly add up to the price and a fully-loaded GT Coupe shall cost you more than $300,000. However, we recommend you to opt for the optional 12-Speaker Bowers & Wilkins stereo system that improves your in-cabin experience.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Performance cars are not generally expected to deliver exemplary fuel efficiency. The 2021 McLaren GT Coupe is EPA rated for 15 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on highways, and 18 MPG combined. With a 19-gallon fuel tank, the vehicle offers a decent range. It runs 285 miles on the city and 418 miles on the highway on a full tank. Though the figures aren’t impressive, the lightweight body design has brought in a significant increase in fuel efficiency. The rivals do offer better efficiency and range figures.

While the Aston Martin DB11 is the most efficient averaging 20 MPG, the Bentley Continental GT gets the best mileage in the segment at 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. It also comes with the largest fuel tank in the lot at 24 gallons which puts its highway driving range well over 600 miles. Other rivals can manage 400-500 miles of highway driving range except for Porsche. It has the smallest tank in the lot at 17.6 gallons and the poor fuel economy drags its range further behind.

Interior
8.0/10

The interior of any McLaren isn’t expected to be sophisticated, and neither do the underpinnings follow the luxury principles. However, the Grand tourer from the brand makes the deal fairer. The 2021 McLaren GT Coupe gets a well-cushioned and comfortable cabin with few luxury elements inside. It is far more spacious than other cars in the brand’s lineup. The cabin is way more lit and airier, thanks to the tinted glass roof that brings in a good amount of light. The seats are well-placed to offer good visibility. Our only problem with the cabin is that ingress and egress might be inconvenient for some.

The carbon fiber or Nappa leather seats are both comfortable and raise a sense of sophistication. Moreover, you can customize the interior entirely as per wish through the available optional packages. Though not as top-notch as some of the rivals, the quality of the materials is acceptable. The minimalist cabin adds practicality to the deal. The cargo space offered is another point where the GT Coupe outshines the rivals. The massive 14.8 cubic feet of cargo space marks the best in the segment. In-cabin storage space includes the shallow center console storage and glove compartment. The only downside here is that the vehicle can seat only two people on the inside.

All rival coupes in the competition can seat 4 people as standard with the exception of the McLaren GT which can seat only 2. The space and interior dimensions of the 2021 McLaren GT Coupe aren’t available. However, the 2-seater coupe offers a decent amount of space and a practical cabin for sure. While interior space for most of the vehicles is not known, the Bentley does boasts a tad bit higher headroom, and even with a set of rear seats, its cargo capacity of 12.6 cu.-ft feels usable and practical. The Porsche 911 Turbo S has considerably lower space at its disposal and is best for two shopping bags.

Some of the standout interior features of the 2021 Mclaren GT include:

  • Carbon fiber and leather sport seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Cabin Air Purification w/Pollen Filtration
  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Soft Grain Aniline Leather Interior
  • Leather steering wheel with mounted controls

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The infotainment unit in the 2021 McLaren GT Coupe is uniquely styled to impress. You get a 7-inch jet-inspired vertically-placed narrow infotainment screen. It offers crystal-clear graphics and sleek responses. The system is intuitive and is user-friendly. It comes paired with a 4-speaker standard sound system, which can be upgraded to the 12-Speaker Bowers & Wilkins stereo system to improve the feel. Apart from that, you also get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, and a direct USB connection. There are physical controls for the infotainment beneath the screen.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 7” touchscreen infotainment system
  • Auxiliary Audio Input with External Media Control
  • 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Navigation
  • Satellite Radio

Exterior
9.9/10

The 2021 McLaren GT Coupe is one of the most attractive and crowd-pulling vehicles in the segment. It’s out of the ordinary and with the distinctive LED Headlights and front fascia, it looks like a modern take on the traditional McLaren design. What makes it special is the taillight that is integrated into the boot and a lowered exhaust. The unique and aerodynamic design helps it glide easily through the air, thereby decreasing the drag coefficient and increasing the performance. The air intakes also do contribute to the dynamics.

The dihedral doors are the most attractive element in the entire package. And the rear gets dual true exhaust tips. The entire vehicle body is made of carbon fiber, which makes it one of the lightest in the segment. Moreover, it is offered in 30 different customizable shades. The panoramic tinted glass roof is another important element in the car that makes it special. To sum it up, it is lighter, smaller, and appealing than most of its rivals.

The 2021 McLaren GT Coupe is one of the smallest offerings in the segment and is only larger than the Porsche. Unlike other cars in the competition, it sits too low and is the widest option measuring 80.5 inches. Its light curb weight of 3,384 lbs and a mid-engine layout adds to the stability too. Bentley Continental GT is the largest and the heaviest. It also sports the longest wheelbase of 112.2 inches, which is almost 7 inches longer than the Mclaren and has adequate clearance from the ground of 5.6 inches. The Aston Martin DB 11 sits right between the Bentley and Mclaren, it finds a midway in terms of dimensions, yet continues to look muscular.

Standout exterior features:

  • Heated power-adjustable side mirrors
  • 15-Spoke Forged Alloy Wheels
  • All-LED Headlights and Taillights
  • Panoramic Privacy Tinted Glass roof
  • Dihedral doors
  • Dual Sports Exhaust

Safety
8.0/10

With decades of experience in the automobile industry, McLaren is well-reputed and genuine to its buyers. The 2021 McLaren GT Coupe is also a reliable model from the brand. The Impact-resistant carbon fiber shell offers a safe space for the occupants within. It gets an all-new sport-tuned electronic stability and traction system along with a pretty decent braking system. However, it fails to offer you advanced driver assistance features such as the rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, or even the blind-spot monitor.

The vehicle hasn’t been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS nor will it ever be as it is too expensive. However, the McLaren GT Coupe is well built and has similar safety characteristics as that of the rivals. However, the rivals offer advanced safety and driver-assistance features onboard.

Standout safety features:

  • Rain- and light-sensing headlamps
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Carbon-fiber shell
  • Emergency Brake Assist
  • Front and Rear Ventilated Disc Brakes
  • Dusk Sensing Headlamps

2021 McLaren GT Coupe vs 2021 Aston Martin DB11

Aston Martin DB11 is one of the best-looking vehicles in the segment. It offers a holistic cabin that reeks of top-notch quality and has a striking exterior design. The Mercedes-Benz-derived infotainment system feels way better than the one in the McLaren GT, which gives a clear advantage to the former. Additionally, the DB11 is bigger and gets better efficiency figures too. However, the McLaren offers more power and punchy acceleration.

2021 McLaren GT Coupe vs 2021 Bentley Continental GT

The Continental GT is one of the best cars in the segment. Apart from being the heaviest in the segment, it offers the best-in-class fuel efficiency and immense practicality. It is competitively priced than the McLaren GT Coupe. It looks as interesting on the inside, as it does outside. However, it lacks character and drama like the dihedral doors. If you need power, performance, and attractive elements, choose the McLaren GT Coupe. But if you prefer a pragmatic option that is opulent and sophisticated, to sit and travel subtly, then the Bentley Continental GT seems to be a viable option for you.

2021 McLaren GT Coupe vs 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S

The Porsche 911 Turbo S is one of the athletic offerings in the segment. It is sportier in styling and character. Moreover, Porsche offers 4 seating capacity, unlike McLaren. But it has the smallest cargo capacity in the lot at 4.5 cubic feet which makes it more of a sports car than a Grand Tourer. To sum it up, McLaren GT Coupe offers character, practicality, and unique features onboard.

Final Verdict

The 2021 McLaren GT Coupe is one of the stylish yet practical offerings from the automaker. It gets the best-in-class power figures, consistent acceleration, enough cargo capacity, and well-laid interiors. However, it gets subpar fuel efficiency and smallest dimensions, seating only 2 people. After all, it gives you everything you shall expect from McLaren. It is safe, reliable and the excellent engineering behind it would never disappoint you at any cost.
