Overview

McLaren Automotives took the world by surprise with the McLaren F1 back in 1992 even though the car was limited to only 106 units globally! After that, came along thrilling and capable cars from the brand such as the MP4-12C, the McLaren Senna, and the McLaren Speedtail. The McLaren 765LT is the most powerful version of the original 720S and gets the same powertrain under its hood as well. Unlike a few other supercars, the 765LT focuses more on driving dynamics and track performance while compromising on the practical aspect.

Buying Advice

The McLaren 765LT is offered in a single trim level only hence, this is the only option to go with. However, if you’re not too bothered about adding a few pounds to the car, we would suggest going with the optional 360-degree camera and the power-adjustable and heated seats for a more comfortable experience.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

After hitting the market recently in 2020, the McLaren 765LT hasn’t seen any changes and the 2022 model will be a carryover as well. With all the thrills, power, and performance, there comes a great price tag, and the 2022 McLaren 765LT costs a painfully-high $382,500. In its segment, the car sees itself going up against the likes of the Ferrari F8 Tributo, the Lamborghini Huracan EVO, and the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.

Features

The 2022 McLaren 765LT will be available in a single trim only and will see a “base” price of $382,500. In a bid to keep the weight in check, the brand has kept the standard list of features of the car to a bare minimum while there are optional packages and standalone features to equip the car better. The standard features of the car include cruise control, variable drift control, a McLaren track telemetry system, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display with McLaren Infotainment System, a rake and reach adjustable steering column, and soft-closing doors. The seats are covered with Alcantara as standard but you can swap them out for premium leather. The cabin sees an abundance of carbon fiber trim everywhere while the switchgear is mostly made of solid aluminum, giving an overall exotic feel inside. Some of the optional features offered by the brand include power-adjustable seats with a heating function, a power-adjustable steering column, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Supercars with wickedly-fast acceleration times and beefy power reserves under their hoods aren’t really meant to save fuel. The 2022 McLaren 765LT is one such example. According to the EPA ratings, the car returns an average of 14mpg inside the city limits along with 18mpg out on the highways. However, floor that gas pedal often, and the mpg ratings will boil down to single-digit figures in no time. The 765LT has a rather small-ish, 19-gallon gas tank that results in acceptable driving range figures.

The Ferrari F8 Tributo is the only one here that seems to be the most practical one too, due to its decent mpg numbers and commendable driving range figures. The Lamborghini Huracan, despite having a naturally aspirated V10, offers almost similar mpg ratings to the 765LT. Moreover, it proves to be slightly more practical than the McLaren due to its bigger gas tank of 23 gallons. The Mercedes-AMG GT surprises with its mpg numbers which are more than what the 765LT offers.

Interior
3.0/10

The seats of an affordable sedan are comfier than the 765LT’s seats. Yes, you read that right. The 2022 McLaren 765LT, to keep the weight down while offering full support, gets a pair of bucket sport seats. The seating position along with the levels of support are exceptional but the cushioning is almost non-existent. After driving the car for about 40-45 minutes, you’ll realize the perils of having a track-focused car. Moreover, the cabin of the 765LT is draped with standard Alcantara upholstery with plenty of carbon fiber trims throughout.

However, you can opt for leather upholstery along with electronic adjustments for the seats, with the latter being absent from the standard features list as well. The dashboard is heavily driver-focused and you’ll get a manual rake and reach adjustments for the steering column. Storage space is hard to find inside the cabin, so you gotta carry your bag on the passenger seat or have to ask your passenger to carry it for you. The seats also get a heating function as an optional extra alongside the optional power adjustments.

Ah! The Ferrari F8 Tributo! A spectacularly-beautiful supercar it is, that doesn’t skimp on the comfort part in a bit to offer a scintillating performance. As standard, the F8 gets a posh and comfortable cabin with a handsome amount of customization options and gets leather seats as standard. The Lamborghini Huracan EVO’s cabin is as striking and sharp as its exterior design. Furthermore, the comfort levels are better than what you’d get with the McLaren 765LT here but the Huracan also suffers from a poor storage capacity as the former as well. The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has a much better-equipped and more comfortable cabin than all the rivals here while the overall design feels more on the luxurious side though.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2022 McLaren 765LT include:

  • Manual/power-adjustable steering column
  • Power-adjustable seats(optional)
  • Heating for the seats(optional)
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Alcantara upholstery
  • Leather upholstery(optional)

How intuitive is the 2022 McLaren 765LT’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system of the 2022 McLaren 765LT feels like an afterthought due to the lack of refinement and layout of the user interface. However, the placement of the screen is quite convenient and easily accessible for the driver as well. The screen is an 8.0-inch touchscreen unit that runs the proprietary McLaren infotainment system and offers standard features such as voice controls, a couple of USB input ports, 4G LTE connectivity, and McLaren Track Telemetry. The user interface can be laggy at times while using, dampening the experience. On the optional list gestures like Bluetooth, Sirius XM, a four-speaker or a 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, and an AM/FM radio unit are available.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2022 McLaren 765LT include:

  • 8.0-inch touchscreen display
  • McLaren Track Telemetry
  • Voice controls
  • Two USB ports
  • 4-speaker/12-speaker audio system(optional)
  • Sirius XM(optional)
  • Bluetooth(optional)

Exterior
7.0/10

The interior of the 2022 McLaren 765LT might be too bare-bones for the ridiculously-high price tag it carries, but the exterior design of the car makes up for it. The exterior design incorporates plenty of sharp and rounded styling cues, making for a complex design language. At the front, the car has a blacked-out front bumper with an integrated front splitter and air dams. The headlamps are all-LED units and are sort of tucked inside a pod-style opening that also has a horizontal LED DRL running across the middle of the opening. The hood or the “frunk lid” has a couple of slight creases that, along with the curvy font fenders, make for a fantastic aerodynamic design. The side profile of the car is also interesting with a lower side skirt that is placed parallel to the end points of the front splitters on either side.

The doors get the iconic butterfly-style opening, and the overall design continues unobstructedly toward the rear end of the vehicle. The rear end or the tail of the car has plenty of blacked-out mesh-style panels along with housing an active rear spoiler. The spoiler gets activated once you turn on the engine and it moves independently to offer the best downforce possible along with acting as an air brake too. The placement of the quad-exhaust pipes is in between the LED tail light units, below the active rear spoiler. On the lower end, the car also gets rear splitters to complete the aerodynamics of the car that initiates right at the front fascia.

Ferrari has always loved to put on a show and it is evident from the exterior design of the F8 Tributo. Much like the 765LT, the F8 has a complex exterior design language along with plenty of aerodynamic design integrated within the body panels. However, everything is streamlined and sorted, giving it a less extreme appearance than the 765LT. The latest Lamborghini cars always look angry from the front and the Huracan EVO is a solid example. It is also one of the best examples of a low-slung supercar and has sharp but appealing exterior design cues. The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Edition is the frowning guy of the lot but gets more carbon fiber exterior trims and panels than all the rivals here. Moreover, it looks like a custom-made car only for the tracks as well, especially due to the fixed and tall rear wing.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • Soft-closing butterfly doors
  • LED headlamps and tail lamps
  • Aerodynamic front and rear splitters
  • Power-operated and heated ORVMs
  • Dual titanium exhaust
  • Brake-actuated limited-slip rear differential

Safety
6.0/10

Even though the 2022 McLaren 765LT costs a fortune to own, you won’t get any ADAS techs as standard, not even as optional either. Moreover, crashing a three hundred grand supercar isn’t very convenient as well, hence its crash ratings aren’t available either. The car, however, gets a wide range of safety techs that helps to keep this wickedly-fast car safe. The standard features include variable drift control, brake disc wipe technology, brake pad wear sensors, speed-limiter, carbon-ceramic brakes, traction control, and electronic stability control as well. Both at the front and rear, the car gets aluminum crash structures as well to keep the cabin as safe as possible.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Variable drift control
  • Brake disc wipe technology
  • Brake pad wear sensors
  • Speed-limiter
  • Carbon-ceramic brakes
  • Traction control
  • Electronic stability control

Competition
9.0/10

2022 McLaren 765LT vs 2022 Ferrari F8 Tributo

The Ferrari F8 Tributo is as quick and as fast as the McLaren 765LT despite making slightly lower power and torque figures than the latter. Moreover, the F8 carries a lower base price tag than the 765LT too. On the other hand, the F8 poses as a better option for shoppers looking for a flashy and fast supercar that is comfortable and decently practical too. The cabin of the F8 is much better equipped and more comfortable than the bare-bones cabin of the 765LT while on the outside, the overall design of the former looks saner than the latter.

2022 McLaren 765LT vs 2022 Lamborghini Huracan EVO

The Lamborghini Huracan EVO, like the McLaren 765LT, is a mad supercar but costs much less than the latter. The interior of the Huracan isn’t as comfy as the F8 but the comfort levels, the design, and the features are definitely better than what the 765LT offers. In terms of exterior design too, the Huracan holds its own but the track performance might not be as proper and extreme as the 765LT.

2022 McLaren 765LT vs 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is a perfect example of how a track-focused road car is supposed to look without jeopardizing interior comfort and design. Yes, the McLaren 765LT looks and feels like a raw supercar designed for the tracks, but the AMG GT takes it up a few notches. With a huge and fixed rear wing, plenty of carbon fiber exterior trims, and an aerodynamically efficient design it is always ready for the tracks, even when standing still.

Final Verdict
8.8/10

If you have around four hundred grand lying on the corner of your bank account unused, and several grand more required to run the car, the McLaren 765LT is a no-nonsense car. You would have to compromise quite a bit in terms of creature comforts and comfy seats while driving the 765LT since the car comes in an almost stripped-down form right from the factory. However, if weight reduction isn’t your cup of tea, you can opt for the optional extras but nothing is going to make the car any comfier due to the track-focused design.
