Overview

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar is offered across four trims and is priced at an MSRP range that starts at $49,600 and goes up to $74,000. There are 3 power trains on offer, a 2.0L, 3.0L, and a massive 5.0L. It further delivers average in terms of fuel economy e and wins hearts for its impeccable interiors. However, it faces staunch competition from the 2020 Jaguar F-Pace and the sporty 2020 Porsche Macan.

After its debut last year, the Land Rover Range Rover Velar stood as quite a performer amongst the other midsize luxury SUVs of its class. For 2020, it has just the same aggressive demeanor, although you can actually keep that in check this time around. The styling is well up to par with the likes of Porsche Macan and Mercedes GLC-Class, perhaps even surpassing them if you are a fan of the classic Discovery. The Land Rover Range Rover Velar is a sporty SUV that can carry 5 passengers with splendor and has no problem when you have to take it off the tarmac.

Buying Advice

The one to pick here is P250 R-Dynamic SE since it is specced quite well. With a decent mix of style and equipment such as 20-inch wheels, leather seats, a 17-speaker Meridian audio system, and power rear liftgate, you get most of what the Range Rover Velar has to offer. We also recommend adding in the Driver Assistance Package for improved safety.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Range Rover Velar offers a couple of engine options to choose from. You can go for the turbocharged inline-4 that does the best of maintaining the balance between power and fuel economy. For a more thrilling experience, there is the supercharged 3.0L V6 that puts out almost 400 horsepower for the driver to play around with. Other features like an adaptive suspension, hill descent control, and configurable AWD make the Velar adept for off-road situations. You can expect a lot of creature comforts, too, with a wide variety of seats, sound systems, and other interior options to choose from. The cabin is highly customizable with several materials to choose from. From faux-suede and leather for the seats to wood and aluminum finish on the panels, it is as upscale as you can expect from a Range Rover.

Nevertheless, it is the price that is the biggest enemy of the Range Rover Velar. For a lineup that stretches up to nearly $80,000, you have a lot of alternatives if you wish for a sporty SUV. The Audi Q8 and Porsche Macan have power figures in the same ballpark as the Velar, with a considerably lower price tag. Just a bit more funds could fetch you the coveted 2020 Porsche Macan. The competition also sees the 2020 Jaguar F-Pace.

"The 2020 Range Rover Velar has an elegant cabin, brawny engine performance, and composed handling, but its infotainment system is awkward to use" - Cars.USNews

The 2020 Range Rover Velar features 4 trims namely the Velar S, Velar R-Dynamic S, R-Dynamic HSE, SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition. They are available with two different engines i.e., the 2.0 Liter turbocharged inline 4 engine and the 3.0 Liter Supercharged V6 engine. But this year the R-Dynamic does not offer the inline 4 engine. The base trim i.e., the Velar S comes equipped with synthetic leather and suede upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, and proximity key entry.

On the other hand, the R-Dynamic S gets upgrades such as perforated grained leather seats, an 11-speaker Meridian sound system, a navigation system, etc. In addition to these, the R-Dynamic SE and HSE trim get the Driver Assistance Package from the get-go. The top-level trims also grant you access to the 23-speaker Meridian Signature Audio System, massaging seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

"Our Velar test vehicle with the V-6 was a laggard, with a posted 22 mpg in our real-world highway fuel-economy test." - Car and Driver

The inline 4 engine of the 2020 Range Rover Velar is fairly thirsty. It provides an average of 23 MPG with a fuel economy of 21 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway. Though slightly better than the rest, it isn't a desirable gas mileage as per industry standards.

The 2020 Range Rover Velar has a tad less fuel economy than others in the class. It runs a mile less per gallon of fuel than other sports SUVs in this segment. The difference is made even more distinct with the supercharged V6 engine. The 2020 Porsche Macan records the lowest fuel efficiency in class.

Interior

"Related to the Jaguar F-Pace, the Land Rover Range Rover Velar presents nearly as striking a shape, wrapped around an interior that’s useful and versatile, one that comes with a few minor compromises." -The Car Connection

Seating and Comfort of the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

This 5 seater luxury SUV has quite roomy space to make you sit comfortably without feeling congested. The Velar has an interior space on par with most of its competitors. The design sense is kept simple and the materials are all top-notch, furthermore, it has been inserted really craft fully. The owners get to choose the wood and metal inserts' texture and grade, the detailing of which is spellbound.

Up against its rivals, the 2020 Land Rover Velar proves to be significantly spacious, the most in comparison. Since we find the details of the 2020 Porsche Macan to be missing, we conclude that the former is better, The Jaguar lands the most compact interior in class.

Infotainment System of the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

The Velar comes with the Land Rovers Touch Control Pro which was introduced in it when it debuted last year. This Infotainment replaces the previous outdated infotainment system in the other Land Rovers this year. It comes with two screens and an associated interface but the touch control might be a bit glitchy at times. Apart from that it also has the following infotainment features to keep you entertained during your drive:

  • Digital Signal Processor
  • Streaming Audio
  • Window Grid And Roof Mount Diversity Antenna
  • Bluetooth Wireless Phone Connectivity
  • 3 LCD Monitors In The Front
  • Turn-By-Turn Navigation Directions

Cargo Volume of the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar might not have the roomiest seating area. But looks like it has the most spacious cargo cabin in the class. It has a cargo volume of 34.4 cu.ft which can be increased to 70.1 cu.ft by folding the second seat.

The Safety rating of the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

Both the esteemed organizations haven't yet rated the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar for its safety, the NHTSA, and the IIHS. They usually tend to skip out on these expensive buys. Probably only because it is too pricey to crash. However, backed by its repute of being a sturdy and quality built off-roader and track machine, the 2020 Velar doesn't let us down in this front.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar vs 2020 Jaguar F-Pace

The F-Pace might be a bit older player in the market than the Velar. It might sure have captured its position first but with the Velar on the run, it started to get tough competition. Both of them come with equally powerful engines but it looks like the Velar turns out to be a better performer. Its interior space and cargo volume are also spacious than the F-Pace. Also, their towing capacity is on par with each other. However, one drawback is that the Velar is a bit thirsty than the F-Pace. But overall the Velar has quite some reasons to justify the extra bucks that you are going to pay for it.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar vs 2020 Porsche Macan

This year the Porsche introduces the Flagship Model for the Second Generation of Macan. Although the new Macan might not flaunt a powerful engine as its predecessor but still is capable of running on par with the Velar and capable of giving a bit better performance than the velar. Its new infotainment also looks quite advanced than that of Velar. However, it still lags behind when it comes to space and a couple of other factors that an SUV should have. Hence here also looks like the Velar is a more justified option for the price being paid for an SUV. But if you are looking for a sports car for 5 you can always go for the Macan.

Final Verdict

This is the second year for the Land Rover Range Velar into the market and it still has much more to improve. Although it is quite spacious and roomy and is a better hauler than most in the class, It still lags behind in terms of Power and Performance. Moreover, it should also try to control its thirst because there are many other better performers in the market which are less thirsty than the 2020 Range Rover Velar.
