Overview

The 2020 Porsche Macan is currently on sale with a starting price tag of $50,900. It gets a 2.0L turbo-4 engine that produces 248 hp and 273 lb-ft. of torque. This engine is not fuel-efficient but delivers incredible performance. It is fast enough to sprint from 0-60 MPH in 6.3 seconds. Speed lovers would prefer the Macan Turbo that is priced at $83,600.

The Macan flaunts an elegant interior built with top-notch materials. The latest infotainment system is user-friendly and the optional Apple CarPlay now has wireless capability. On the safety front, the Macan comes with few driver aids. However, it falls short in rear-seat space and cargo volume. The Macan gets its rivalry from the BMW X3, the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and the Audi Q5

Buying Advice

The Base trim comes with a decent list of standard features but we recommend buying the Premium package for your Macan. Also, go for the Sport Chrono package for better performance. It adds Sport Plus mode, launch control, and an analog and digital stopwatch.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

There's nothing in this class that's quite like the Macan- Edmunds

The Porsche Macan is the best-selling car in its lineup and is turning up to be an equal success as the Cayenne. This SUV is filled with quality and performance you'd be hard-pressed to find from anyone else except Porsche. It has a very tasteful design with signature elements screaming Porsche. The Macan is also available certain performance and comfort upgrades.

As expected from Porsche, the ownership costs are high. Its maintenance and repair costs soar high compared to its class rivals. You can expect around $14,120 every year including fuel, depreciation, insurance, etc. The average cost per mile is estimated to be $0.94 due to its non-efficient engine. However, it stands above its rivals in terms of reliability with a score of 82 out of 100.

Buying Advice

The Base trim comes with a decent list of standard features but we recommend buying the Premium package for your Macan. Also, go for the Sport Chrono package for better performance. It adds Sport Plus mode, launch control, and an analog and digital stopwatch.

Porsche prioritizes performance over fuel economy in the Macan- The Car Connection

Building a sporty crossover is a piece of cake but making it efficient is a hell of a task. The Porsche Macan struggles to even achieve the basic industry standards. Its appetite in the lanes of the city expands to give you an 18 MPG mileage, while the highway juices out 23 MPG at its max. The combined mileage comes out to be 21 MPG.

The Macan comes with an auto-start/stop engine feature that plays a minor role to get these fuel estimates. The Macan delivers 416 miles of mixed range thanks to its large 19.8-gallon fuel tank. Both its fuel economy and driving range are not competitive in comparison to its rivals. Therefore, get ready to visit the gas stations frequently if you plan on buying the Macan.

From the above table, it is evident that the BMW X3 is the most fuel-efficient SUV here. The powerful Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is also an efficient SUV but its driving range is close to the Macan due to its small fuel tank. The Audi Q5 also comes standard with an AWD system like the Macan but its fuel estimates are way better.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2020 Porsche Macan has an elegant interior with intuitive infotainment controls and comfortable front seats- Cars.USNews

The interior of the Porsche Macan has one of the best interior layouts in its class. The cabin is solidly built and filled with abundant luxurious features. There's meticulous attention to detail, after all, it's a Porsche. The seats are leather-trimmed with faux suede accents. The front seats are extremely comfortable and the side-bolstering is great. Both of them are 8-way power-adjustable but heated and ventilated functions are optional.

You can also order 14-way power front seats with memory settings for an extra cost. The steering column isn't power-adjustable but it comes wrapped in leather and looks fancy. The front row accommodates six-footers without any hesitation as there is ample head and legroom. Things are not the same in the second row. The sloping roofline cuts the headroom and the legroom offered cannot accommodate long-legged people.

A 10.9-inch touchscreen display is fixed at the center of the dashboard and operates through the Porsche Communication Management infotainment system. Apple CarPlay is an optional feature whereas Android Auto is not available at all. This infotainment system is known for its easy-to-operate interface and is connected to a 10-speaker sound system. There are a sea of buttons in the center console for a quick change of audio and climate settings.

Speaking of practicality, the Macan is short in this field. Looks like the coupe-style roof has quite an impact on the cargo capacity.Trunk volume of 17.6 cu-ft. is offered in the Macan, which is below average in its class. Thanks to the 60/40 split, the Macan's cargo space expands up to 52.9 cu-ft. Although the overall cargo room is less compared to its rivals, it's enough to store luggage for a weekend trip with our family. Some main interior features are:

  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • 8-way power front leather seats
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Power tailgate
  • Keyless entry
  • Panoramic sunroof (optional)

Porsche cues morph into a crossover SUV shape to create the 2020 Macan- The Car Connection

The Porsche Macan's exterior styling was refreshed last year. Hence, the design remains the same for this year as well. The LED headlights were given a mild revision. The grille and front bumper were revised for larger air ducts. The front-end design has evolved into something more aggressive and attractive. Porsche has also added new 21 and 22-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. The 7.8 inches of ground clearance makes it a good off-roader too.

The short wheelbase of the Macan affects its rear legroom. The side blades can be customized to suit your taste. You can have it in gloss black, matte black, grey, or a body-colored finish. You get a seamless strip of LED lighting on the tailgate and that is the easiest way of identifying the new Macan from the older one. The overall facelift may not look like much but it certainly makes it appear more up-to-date in the market as well as on the road.

The Audi Q5 sits 0.4 inches higher than the Macan, which makes it a good mild off-roader. At 113.1 inches, the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class has the widest wheelbase. Therefore, its rear passenger space is better than the Macan. The BMW X3 is taller than the Macan and this certainly helps in more headroom. Some additional exterior features of the Macan are:

  • LED headlights
  • LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Fog lamps
  • Power-folding & heated exterior mirrors
  • Black grille with active grille shutters
  • Black bodyside moldings
  • Dual exhaust tips
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • Black window trim
  • 18, 20 & 22-inch alloy wheels

Safety
9.9/10

Like many Porsche models, the Macan has not been crash-tested by a major U.S. institution- Cars.com

Neither NHTSA nor IIHS have crash-tested the Porsche Macan for its safety. This is much common in the U.S. for a vehicle with a sports car manufacturer badge. However, the body shell of the Macan is made from a collection of aluminum and ultra and high tensile strength steel for a rigid yet lightweight body.

The cabin is surrounded by six airbags to protects the occupants in every seat. Speaking of safety features, the Macan comes with just a few driver-assist features and there are no options available too. The standard active safety features are very essential in day-to-day life and can prevent the risk of an accident. These include:

  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rearview camera
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Park assist
  • Porsche Active Safe

Competition

2020 Porsche Macan vs 2020 Audi Q5

Priced much less than the Macan, the Audi Q5 gives a good challenge to the Macan in terms of performance. But the Macan boasts better handling characteristics. The Q5 is more efficient and also offers more rear-seat space than the Macan. Both the SUVs have luxurious interiors and are well-equipped with features. The Q5 offers fewer standard safety features than the Macan.

2020 Porsche Macan vs 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class' base engine is powerful and punchy enough to deliver an agile acceleration. But, it falls short on towing capacity. It is also ahead of the Macan in terms of fuel economy and rear passenger space while cargo volume is somewhat similar. The GLC-Class's cabin is equally luxurious as the Macan but breaks the tie by offering a long list of driver aids.

2020 Porsche Macan vs 2020 BMW X3

The price difference between the two SUVs is nearly $9,000. Both of them are equally powerful and provide athletic handling but the BMW X3 is the most fuel-efficient SUV in this class. The cabin of the X3 is also upscale and luxurious but its infotainment system also offers standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The X3 leads the competition with better cargo space and more standard safety techs.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Porsche Macan has entered the market with quite some extravagant features along with a new look. Nimble handling and sportiness are what this crossover has to offer, however, it still lags behind in some aspects when compared to others in the class. The high price is another thing that may affect your buying preference. Otherwise going with the new Porsche Macan is a breath of fresh air in the sports SUV world.
