Overview

The Ford Mustang is an iconic piece of history that once ruled the American roads. It remains unmatched to date. To celebrate its golden jubilee, Ford has introduced the sixth-generation Mustang for the 2015 MY. With the new generation, the Mustang gets a total redesign with more muscular body lines and a necessary drop in its weight, to make it more agile and sporty.

Buying Advice

If you want to experience the thrill of Mustang and yet remain practical, you should go for the Ecoboost trim. It is available for $25,300 and is powered by a fuel-efficient 4 cylinder which is no less than the base V6. Also, you get better options and features inside the cabin if compared to the base trim. You can even avail the optional packages to get similar features to the Ecoboost Premium trim.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2015 Ford Mustang Coupe brings a lot of changes to the muscle car package. To make it more practical for daily drivable, Ford offers an Ecoboost 4 cylinder engine as well. The main focus was on performance and dynamics to make it capable against rivals such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and the Nissan 370Z. With a starting price of $23,800, the Mustang is offered 6 trim levels.

Features
9.0/10

For 2015, the Mustang lineup is pretty huge. With three engine options and separate Premium trims, you can avail your Mustang of between $23,800 to $36,300. The limited-edition trim brings a special design option for both exterior and interior. Now you have a better cabin design with premium trims. However, it doesn't get enough space in the rear row which is disappointing. The Mustang GT is the most desirable trim with its sports-tuned driving dynamics and an extremely loud V8 engine that shoots like a bullet.

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

The 2015 Ford Mustang Coupe rides with a 3.7L V6 engine as standard. The V6 motor outputs 300 horses @6,500 RPM with a torque output of 280lb-ft at 4,000 RPM. For daily drivers, there's a new Ecoboost 2.3L 4 cylinder engine with 310hp of max. power with a 320lb-ft of low RPM torque.

To get true to its muscle car roots, you can avail the Mustang GT which is powered by a 5.0L V8 engine. The mighty V8 roars loud enough to deaf you and is the most popular choice among enthusiasts. It outputs 435hp of power at 6,500 RPM and 400lb-ft torque output. You have a 6-Speed manual transmission as standard where you can avail of the 6-Speed automatic as well. If that doesn't work for you, you can always tune up the engine for more horses.

The base V6 ain't that bad as it can go fast with the 300hp that pushes it ahead from 0-60 in just 5.5 seconds with a quarter-mile run of 14.3 seconds. The lighter Ecoboost is a bit ahead with its quicker 5.1 seconds 0-60 MPH run and 14.2 seconds in the quarter. The fun begins with the V8 and it sprints from 0-60 which is mere 4.5 seconds and a 12.9 seconds quarter mile.

The Ford Mustang offers the most valued package as compared to its rivals. Yet GM hasn't spared anyone with its one step ahead strategy and the same is the case with the Chevy Camaro. The Challenger is huge and weighs a lot which pulls it back when it comes to base engine performance.

Imports have always dominated muscle cars. That's why the Nissan 370Z is the most powerful rival to the Mustang with its 332hp V6. Not just that, it delivers much better performance figures with better handling and dynamics.

Fuel Economy
8.4/10

The Mustang won't require much of your money even if it is about fuel. The base V6 has 17 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined where you get a maximum mileage of 448 miles on the highway out of its 16-gallon tank. The Ecoboost 4 cylinder is much better with its 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and a combined 26 mpg.

With a great economy, Ford dropped the weight by switching to a smaller 15.5-gallon tank which will still fetch you 481 miles of range. The power-packed 5.0 V8 manages to deliver 15 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and a combined 19 mpg. On a full tank, the 16.0 gal fuel will give you a maximum highway range of 400 miles which is fair enough considering the power under the hood.

The V6 on the Mustang is not the most fuel-efficient engine, still, it is a bit ahead of its arch-rival Camaro and that's why Chevy offers a bigger fuel tank. Surprisingly, the Dodge Challenger has the best fuel economy with its base V6 and it delivers the maximum range of miles. If we talk about the Nissan 370Z, it delivers the highest mileage figures out of all the cars here.

Interior
8.4/10

With the sixth generation, Ford has redesigned the interior by replacing the dated cabin. Modern ergonomics make it much better and practical than the previous generation. Yet you can still sense the typical Mustang interior layout. The controls surround the center-mounted infotainment where the boxy AC vents are replaced with the round ones. You also get a new leather steering wheel with controls and paddle shifters. The center console between the front seats is reworked with a new shift knob and 2 cup holders.

It comes with comfortable sport bucket seats with standard 4-way driver and 2-way passenger adjustments. The Ecoboost Premium trims offer 6-way power bucket seats with lumbar support, 2-way head restraints, and heating function as well. The rear seat is disappointing with the limited space. As it is a 50-50 split-bench seat, you have an option to fold it down to make way for the cargo which is much better than seating as there's cramped headroom and legroom. You also have standard cloth upholstery and optional leather/vinyl upholstery with higher trims.

The 13.5 cubic feet trunk space is good enough for the luggage of two people on a weekend. The new generation Mustang adds new convenience options with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, adjustable steering wheel, dual-zone air-conditioning, front center armrest, and seatback storage pockets. The GT package gets trim exclusive design and features. With premium chrome and metal-look accents, the cabin of the Mustang looks more attractive. However, most of the convenience features are limited to higher trims.

All the cars make space for just 4 people except for the Nissan 370Z with its 2 seats. When compared with rivals, the Mustang doesn't seem that bad in terms of space. Apart from its tight headroom and legroom in both the rows, it offers the best in class legroom. If we talk about the rivals, they offer limited legroom that affects the seating comfort of the passengers.

In terms of cargo space, the 2015 Ford Mustang Coupe is much better than the Chevrolet Camaro and the Nissan 370Z. The bigger Dodge Challenger offers slightly better cargo room but in terms of overall practicality, Mustang is the best option. The interior quality gets better with the range-topping trims where you can also avail yourself of optional packages. Highlight Interior features in the 2015 Ford Mustang are:

  • Leather steering wheel and gear knob
  • Heated sports bucket seats
  • Sporty interior color options
  • Leather and vinyl upholstery
  • Dual-zone air-conditioning

How intuitive is the 2015 Ford Mustang Coupe's Infotainment unit?

The base infotainment with the 2015 Ford Mustang Coupe is powered by SYNC communication. It is a 4.2-inch LCD placed at the below center with numerous controls. It supports Applink and USB connectivity. For your music and entertainment, you have an AM/FM radio and an in-dash CD player. There are 6 speakers as standard to jam up your beats and an input jack as well.

For the Premium trims, there's SYNC infotainment with the MyFord touch system. It powers an 8.0-inch interactive touchscreen display. With that, you have a SiriusXM for up to 6 months and an HD radio as well. For the love of music and audio, performance speakers with an optional 12 speaker Shaker Pro audio system that lives up the cabin with surround sound. Infotainment features in the 2015 Ford Mustang are:

  • SYNC with MyFord touch
  • 8.0-inch touchscreen
  • Sirius XM and HD radio
  • Applink and USB tethering
  • Shaker Pro audio system

Exterior
8.4/10

With the all-new sixth-generation, Ford has started a new era of modern muscle cars. The 2015 Mustang is the true example of power meets technology. In terms of aerodynamics and design, we'll be getting a more muscular Mustang with bigger wheel arches, sleek front fascia. Still, the Mustang looks as iconic as ever with its classic tail lamps. The aggressive front fascia of the Mustang gets a thinner honeycomb grille with the Mustang logo and projector headlamps and integrated LED daytime running lights.

The aerodynamic bumpers have huge air ducts where you have separate fog lamps. You have a sloping hood that seems pretty massive from the front. The roofline declines with the doors which looks cool but ain't practical as there's limited headroom for the rear seat. The signature rear fascia is updated with LED brake lights.

With the rear lip spoiler and the dual chrome tip exhausts, the Mustang looks sporty and appealing against the other cars in its segment. Even with the standard package, the Ford Mustang gets sporty blacked-out valances and side skirts. The Mustang rides on 17.0-inch silver sparkle aluminum wheels as standard. The premium trims get 18-inch machined painted wheels. The range-topping GT trim has either 19 or 20-inch black aluminum wheels.

As compared to the other muscle cars, the Ford Mustang is the lightest sports coupe. When the Nissan 370Z comes into the picture, then the Mustang seems heavy. In terms of body style and dynamics, the Chevrolet Camaro is the closest rival to the Mustang. Still, it rides higher than any other car with its 5.6-inch ground clearance. Also, the wheelbase is comparatively shorter than the Camaro and Challenger to give it a sporty stance and handling. Exterior features in the 2015 Ford Mustang are:

  • Sharp exterior design
  • Black honeycomb grille
  • Projector headlamps with LED DRL
  • GT performance package
  • LED brake lights
  • Rear lip spoiler
  • Dual tip chrome exhausts

Safety
9.7/10

The all-new Mustang comes with major changes to the design and structure. Ford has dropped a lot of weight and has added rigidity with high-strength steel. The S550 platform will add agility and dynamics to the 2015 Ford Mustang. Moreover, the Mustang scored 5 Stars in the NHTSA safety ratings. However, IIHS has rated front driver side overlap average, otherwise, it has scored Good ratings.

The base Mustang Coupe offers limited safety features such as electronic stability control, rearview camera, and tire pressure monitor. With the Premium trims, you get your hands on advanced safety features like adaptive cruise control, blindspot monitoring, forward collision warning, and emergency braking. The track-focused GT trim adds track safety features as well. Standout Safety features include:

  • High-strength steel structure
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blindspot monitor
  • Forward collision warning

Final Verdict

Ford has taken a big step by reintroducing an updated Mustang to the world. With its sharper updated design, the sixth generation Mustang is the flagship killer. To make it better than the previous generation, Ford has used a lightweight structure and aerodynamics to make it track-ready. The Ford Mustang Coupe offers an affordable package. It is focused on performance as well as the economy. With available trim options, you have top-notch convenience and comfort. If you are a fan of American muscle, then the all-new Mustang has everything you want.
